Some scholars believe that martial arts form part of the origins of the existing Japanese culture. Certainly, karate has helped to open Eastern culture to the West and while many of us don't necessarily understand this different way of life, many of us respect it and seek to implement some aspects of it in our lives. Attention to Detail Approximately 400 years ago, Japan was enduring a period of economic instability, as the large industrious population was existing in a nation that lacked resources and was unable to take advantage of economic booms. At this time, the nation's rulers came up with the concept that 'all work is the pursuit of knowledge'. This basically meant that work was for character building first and foremost with productivity only a secondary concern. This philosophy ensured that attention to detail was more important than production. To become an expert in karate and other martial arts, you must also practice incredible attention to detail. It may seem that practicing the same footwork patterns over and over again is pointless, but it serves an important purpose. Likewise, kata teaches students valuable lessons in patience and technique. Practitioners have found that lessons learned in karate help them in their everyday lives, as they learn patience and the importance of repetition. While karate in its modern form did not originate 400 years ago, unarmed combat was gaining in prominence on Okinawa and the lessons learned here eventually took root in Japanese culture. A Japanese Glasnost 'Glasnost' is the name of the 'openness' policy adopted by the Soviet Union by Mikhail Gorbachev but we can also use the 'openness' phrase when it comes to Japan and the Western world. Up until the 20th century, nations in the Far East such as China and Japan were seen as mysterious to the outside world, especially to the United States. Even those who lived on the Japanese mainland had little idea of the martial arts practiced in Okinawa until the early 20th century when Gichin Funakoshi introduced his version of Karate to Japan in 1922. Public exhibitions were held and interest spread rapidly. Yet the West looked on in envy until the 1960s, when karate groups started to expand internationally and by 1970, the World Union of Karate-do Organizations officially unified karate globally. This helped pave the way for Japan and its culture to become more accessible to people from around the world. Soon, we began to learn more about Japanese culture and its people, while Japan also incorporated some aspects of Western culture. As we said at the beginning, it is a stretch to say that karate changed the history of Japan but we believe it had an impact on the nation. The attention to detail required to become a karate expert can be seen in Japanese culture and the popularity of karate helped open Japan to the world.
