Polk Street is a street in San Francisco, California, that travels northward from Market Street to Beach Street and is one of the main thoroughfares of the Polk Gulch neighborhood traversing through the Tenderloin, Nob Hill, and Russian Hill neighborhoods. The street takes its name from former U.S. President James K. Polk. The street remains a busy business district with many restaurants, cafes, and numerous bars.
The street also has bike lanes, which were approved in 2002. San Francisco bike route 25 runs along Polk Street, and is the only North-South route suitable for casual bicycle travel within at least a mile in either direction. There is an ongoing debate on whether to increase the level of these improvements.
Polk Street is named for James Knox Polk (November 2, 1795 – June 15, 1849) the 11th President of the United States (1845–1849). During the Mexican-American War, and after the Texas annexation, Polk turned his attention to California, hoping to acquire the territory from Mexico before any European nation. The main interest was San Francisco Bay as an access point for trade with Asia.
San Francisco (/sæn frənˈsɪskoʊ/), officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California and the only consolidated city-county in California. San Francisco encompasses a land area of about 46.9 square miles (121 km2) on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, which makes it the smallest county in the state. It has a density of about 18,187 people per square mile (7,022 people per km2), making it the most densely settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in the state of California and the second-most densely populated major city in the United States after New York City. San Francisco is the fourth-most populous city in California, after Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose, and the 13th-most populous city in the United States—with a Census-estimated 2014 population of 852,469. The city and its surrounding areas are known as the San Francisco Bay Area, and are a part of the larger OMB designated San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland combined statistical area, the fifth most populous in the nation with an estimated population of 8.6 million.

A street is a public thoroughfare (usually paved) in a built environment. It is a public parcel of land adjoining buildings in an urban context, on which people may freely assemble, interact, and move about. A street can be as simple as a level patch of dirt, but is more often paved with a hard, durable surface such as concrete, cobblestone or brick. Portions may also be smoothed with asphalt, embedded with rails, or otherwise prepared to accommodate non-pedestrian traffic.
Originally the word "street" simply meant a paved road (Latin: "via strata"). The word "street" is still sometimes used colloquially as a synonym for "road", for example in connection with the ancient Watling Street, but city residents and urban planners draw a crucial modern distinction: a road's main function is transportation, while streets facilitate public interaction. Examples of streets include pedestrian streets, alleys, and city-centre streets too crowded for road vehicles to pass. Conversely, highways and motorways are types of roads, but few would refer to them as streets.

I was walking towards downtown, when I heard shouting. I saw this man flailing his arms around outside of the famous Mitchel Brother O'Farrell theater at O'Farrell and Polk Street. I walked with him up Polk St. to see if I could figure out what was going on. I am not sure exactly what is going on with this man, whether he had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Tourette Syndrome, or some form of Loose Association. It reminds me of loose association, because there is a pattern to what he is saying. In general he seems to be alliterating. Also, I'd like to give a huge shoutout to whoever it was that shared my "Insane Chinese Woman" video on Facebook. I've seen a huge boost on my channel from it! This was videoed 12-12-15 about six or seven city blocks away from where it all started, in downtown's Union Square. Imagine if all of this commotion is happening that far away from the start, from where they go all directions, what the rest of the city looked like at the time. Maybe a helicopter view would have been better, huh? We were having a great time driving through this madness.

Driving through 21 blocks of Polk Street southbound at night (not counting alleys). Polk Gulch and Civic Center neighborhoods. If you look closely in some spots, you can see the fog flowing against the night sky in the distance (at least you can in the original, the YouTube compression makes it a little harder to see, but it is still there.)

November, 1999, Margaret Cho is home in San Francisco at the Warfield Theater. Cho structures her monologue loosely on her professional life's trajectory: doing stand-up, cast in an ABC-TV sitcom, losing 30 pounds in two weeks for the part, the show's cancellation, a descent into booze, pills, and self-loathing, and a resurrection into her own voice, her own shape, and being the one she wants. Along the way we visit Karl Langerfeld in jail, a lesbian cruise ship, a TV Guide photo shoot, a hospital, bars, and her family's Polk Street bookshop. Takes on being a fag hag, speeding up felatio, casual daily racism, and her mother's phone messages highlight a scabrous, brilliant performance.
