The province of Crotone (Italian: provincia di Crotone) is a province in the Calabria region of Italy. It was formed in 1992 out of a section of the province of Catanzaro. The provincial capital is the city of Crotone. It borders the provinces of Cosenza, Catanzaro, and also the Ionian Sea. It contains the mountain Pizzuta, the National Park of the Sila, Montagnella Park, and the Giglietto Valley. Crotone was founded in 710 BCE. It participated in the Second Punic War against the Roman Republic.
The province of Crotone has a population of 174,328 inhabitants over a surface area of 1,735.78 square kilometres (670.19 sq mi), giving it a population density of 100.44 inhabitants per square kilometre as of 2015. Its provincial president is Peppino Vallone and the city of Crotone has a population of 61,131 inhabitants as of 2015. The province contains 27 comuni (singular: comune), listed at comuni of the Province of Crotone.
The area around Capo Collona, the easternmost point of the province, is rich in archaeological remains of stone age settlements, with large quantities of Neolithic pottery being found. The Greeks settled on the coasts of Calabria during the eighth and seventh centuries BC, and the city of Crotone was founded, under the name of Kroton, by Greek Achaeans in around 710 BC. It grew to become a town of 50,000 to 80,000 inhabitants around 500 BC. The wrestler Milo of Croton was born in Crotone during the sixth century BC and the town had a great reputation for prowess in athletics having produced many Olympic champions. Pythagoras moved to Croton in around 530 BC, and a medical school was also based in the region at around this time. It flourished as an important port and conquered the city Sybaris under the command of Milo. Pyrrhus of Epirus then controlled the city until it fell under Roman Republic rule. The city Crotone participated in the Second Punic War, in which, it rebelled and fought against its Roman Republic rulers.

Vibo Valentia (Italian: [ˈviːbo vaˈlɛntsja]) is a city and comune (municipality) in the Calabria region of southern Italy, near the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is the capital of the province of Vibo Valentia, and is an agricultural, commercial and tourist center (the most famous places nearby are Tropea, Ricadi and Pizzo). There are also several large manufacturing industries, including the tuna district of Maierato. Very important for the local economy is Vibo Marina's harbour.
Vibo Valentia was originally the Greek colony of Hipponion. It was founded, probably around the late 7th century BC, by inhabitants of Locri, a principal city of the Italian Magna Graecia, south of Vibo Valentia on the Ionian Sea. Diodorus Siculus reports that the city was taken in 388 BC by Dionysius the Elder tyrant of Syracuse, who deported all the population. The population came back in 378 BC, with the help of the Carthaginians. In the following years Hipponion came under the dominion of the Bruttii, who controlled most of Calabria. After the town fell to Rome, the name was Latinized to Hipponium. The town became a Roman colony in 194 BC with the name of Vibo Valentia. After a phase of prosperity during the late Republic and early Empire, the town was almost completely abandoned after the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

Calabria, according to the European Union, is the poorest region of Europe, and Crotone the poorest in Calabria. They've been trying to build a modern port in the province since the 1950s, but the project is intermittently restarted and abandoned. A couple of years ago, the province got some incentive as an Israeli investment firm had plans to build Europaradiso, a Las Vegas style resort, about 10km from the provincial capital, but things are not looking good for the project. After so many failures, can these projects work or will they sink even further into poverty? CATANZARO.
