Pentedattilo è una frazione del Comune di Melito Porto Salvo, in Provincia di Reggio Calabria. Fino al 1811 fu comune autonomo.
Posto a 250 metri s.l.m. Pentedattilo sorge arroccato sulla rupe del Monte Calvario, dalla caratteristica forma che ricorda quella di una ciclopica mano con cinque dita, e da cui deriva il nome.
Sfortunatamente alcune parti della montagna sono crollate ed essa non presenta più tutte e cinque le "dita", ma rimane comunque un posto affascinante e pieno di mistero, uno dei centri più caratteristici dell'Area Grecanica.
Quello che era l'antico paese è risultato, fino a pochi anni or sono, quasi del tutto abbandonato: la popolazione era infatti migrata leggermente più a valle formando un nuovo piccolo centro dal quale si poteva ammirare il vecchio paese fantasma.
Solo ultimamente nel borgo sta risorgendo una serie di attività: artigiani locali hanno aperto alcune botteghe per la vendita dei propri prodotti, ed è presente un ristorante. Il parziale ripristino del borgo ha compreso il rifacimento della pavimentazione della stradina principale ed il restauro di alcuni edifici.
Ogni estate Pentedattilo è tappa fissa del festival itinerante Paleariza, importante evento della cultura grecanica nel panorama internazionale. Inoltre ospita tra agosto e settembre il Pentedattilo Film Festival, festival internazionale di cortometraggi, che unisce magicamente cinema e territorio.
Colonia calcidese nel 640 a.C., fu per tutto il periodo greco-romano un fiorente centro economico della zona; durante il dominio romano divenne inoltre un importante centro militare per la sua strategica posizione di controllo sulla fiumara Sant'Elia, via privilegiata per raggiungere l'Aspromonte.
Con la dominazione bizantina iniziò un lungo periodo di declino, causato dai continui saccheggi che il paese subì prima da parte dei Saraceni ed in seguito anche da parte del Duca di Calabria.
Nel XII secolo Pentedattilo fu conquistato da Normanni e, con i paesi di Capo D'Armi, Condofuri e Montebello Ionico, fu trasformato in una baronia affidata alla famiglia Abenavoli dal re Ruggero d'Altavilla.
Col passare del tempo l'egemonia feudataria degli Abenavoli si restrinse e il governo del paese passò alla nobile famiglia reggina dei Francoperta; nel 1589, a causa di debiti e questioni di illegittimità, il feudo fu confiscato a Giovanni Francoperta e venduto all'asta dal Sacro Regio Consiglio per 15.180 ducati alla famiglia degli Alberti insieme al titolo di marchesi.
La dominazione degli Alberti, nonostante i tragici eventi legati alla cosiddetta Strage degli Alberti, durò fino al 1760 quando il feudo fu venduto ai Clemente, già marchesi di San Luca, e da questi ai Ramirez nel 1823.
Nel 1783 Pentedattilo fu gravemente danneggiato da un devastante terremoto, e in seguito al sisma iniziò un costante flusso migratorio verso Melito Porto Salvo che perdurò sino al periodo risorgimentale; proprio a causa dello spopolamento nel 1811 il comune fu trasferito a Melito Porto Salvo e Pentedattillo ne divenne frazione.
A metà degli anni sessanta il paese fu completamente abbandonato fino ai primi anni ottanta, quando fu riscoperta da giovani ed associazioni. Iniziò così un lento cammino di recupero ad opera di volontari provenienti da tutta Europa.

Pentedattilo Ghost Town
Dalla caratteristica forma che ricorda quella di una ciclopica mano con cinque dita, e da cui deriva il nome: penta + daktylos = cinque dita.
Si narra che la notte di Pasqua del 1686 le due famiglie furono protagoniste di una strage sanguinaria. Il barone Bernardino Abenavoli voleva prendere in moglie Antonietta Alberti. La donna però fu chiesta in sposa e concessa a Don Petrillo Cortes, figlio del viceré di Napoli. Questa notizia indusse l’ira passionale del barone che la notte di Pasqua entrò nel castello e si vendicò di tutti gli Alberti tranne dell’amata e del futuro sposo.

Pentedattilo
Pentedattilo (Calabrian Greek: Pentadàktilo) is a ghost town in Calabria, southern Italy, administratively a frazione of Melito di Porto Salvo. Until 1811, before the unification of Italy, it was a separate commune. It is situated at 250 m above the sea level, on the Monte Calvario, a mountain whose shapes once resembled that of five fingers (whence the name, from the Greek penta + daktylos , meaning "five fingers")
History
The town was founded as a colony of the Greek city of Chalcis, in 640 BC. A flourishing commercial town during the Greater Greece and Roman eras, it declined during the Byzantine domination, when it was sacked by the Saracens and by others.
In the 12th century it was conquered by the Normans, and, together with Capo D'Armi, Condofuri and Montebello Ionico, it became part of a baronal fief under the Abenavoli family. These were succeeded by the Francoperta, from Reggio Calabria, and then by the Alberti (until 1760), the Clement and the Ramirez (1823).
The town was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1783, which caused the migration of much of the population to the nearby Melito Porto Salvo. The town remained totally uninhabited from the mid-1960 to the 1980s, when it was partially restored and repopulated by volunteers from across Europe.

Porto Salvo
Porto Salvo (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpoɾtu ˈsaɫvu]) is a civil parish in the municipality of Oeiras, Portugal. It is situated to the north of the parish of Oeiras e São Julião da Barra, Paço de Arcos e Caxias. The population in 2011 was 15,157, in an area of 7.34 km².
History
Tradition suggests that the locality of Porto Salvo was constructed by crews from ships travelling to and from India, during the Portuguese period of discovery. In the middle of a great storm, these sailors promised the Virgin Mary that if they saved their lives, that they would build in here honour a hermitage on the highest point on land. Since this time, all the ships that arrived along the Tagus fired a 20-gun salvo in honour of their invocation until the end of the 19th century. The hilltop, where the actual parish is located, served for a long time as a point of orientation for ships that arrived along the coast. Much like the early sailors, successive crews began calling the area as Porto Salvo (Saved Port).The chapel was consecrated to Nossa Senhora do Porto Salvo (Our Lady of Porto Salvo), and built by the early crews. In ruins for some time, it was reconstructed in the 18th century. The rustic porch-like facade has two azulejo panels, painted by António de Oliveira Bernardes, while its single-nave interior is decorated by azulejo tile dating to 1734. These tiles represent the life of the Virgin Mary, and the first years of the life of Jesus Christ.

Pentedattilo Ghost Town Dalla caratteristica forma che ricorda quella di una ciclopica mano con cinque dita, e da cui deriva il nome: penta + daktylos = cinque dita. Si narra che la notte di Pasqua del 1686 le due famiglie furono protagoniste di una strage sanguinaria. Il barone Bernardino Abenavoli voleva prendere in moglie Antonietta Alberti. La donna però fu chiesta in sposa e concessa a Don Petrillo Cortes, figlio del viceré di Napoli. Questa notizia indusse l’ira passionale del barone che la notte di Pasqua entrò nel castello e si vendicò di tutti gli Alberti tranne dell’amata e del futuro sposo. Pentidattilo o pentedattilo

Pentedattilo è una frazione del Comune di Melito Porto Salvo, in Provincia di Reggio Calabria. Fino al 1811 fu comune autonomo.
Posto a 250 metri s.l.m. Pentedattilo sorge arroccato sulla rupe del Monte Calvario, dalla caratteristica forma che ricorda quella di una ciclopica mano con cinque dita, e da cui deriva il nome.
Sfortunatamente alcune parti della montagna sono crollate ed essa non presenta più tutte e cinque le "dita", ma rimane comunque un posto affascinante e pieno di mistero, uno dei centri più caratteristici dell'Area Grecanica.
Quello che era l'antico paese è risultato, fino a pochi anni or sono, quasi del tutto abbandonato: la popolazione era infatti migrata leggermente più a valle formando un nuovo piccolo centro dal quale si poteva ammirare il vecchio paese fantasma.
Solo ultimamente nel borgo sta risorgendo una serie di attività: artigiani locali hanno aperto alcune botteghe per la vendita dei propri prodotti, ed è presente un ristorante. Il parziale ripristino del borgo ha compreso il rifacimento della pavimentazione della stradina principale ed il restauro di alcuni edifici.
Ogni estate Pentedattilo è tappa fissa del festival itinerante Paleariza, importante evento della cultura grecanica nel panorama internazionale. Inoltre ospita tra agosto e settembre il Pentedattilo Film Festival, festival internazionale di cortometraggi, che unisce magicamente cinema e territorio.
Colonia calcidese nel 640 a.C., fu per tutto il periodo greco-romano un fiorente centro economico della zona; durante il dominio romano divenne inoltre un importante centro militare per la sua strategica posizione di controllo sulla fiumara Sant'Elia, via privilegiata per raggiungere l'Aspromonte.
Con la dominazione bizantina iniziò un lungo periodo di declino, causato dai continui saccheggi che il paese subì prima da parte dei Saraceni ed in seguito anche da parte del Duca di Calabria.
Nel XII secolo Pentedattilo fu conquistato da Normanni e, con i paesi di Capo D'Armi, Condofuri e Montebello Ionico, fu trasformato in una baronia affidata alla famiglia Abenavoli dal re Ruggero d'Altavilla.
Col passare del tempo l'egemonia feudataria degli Abenavoli si restrinse e il governo del paese passò alla nobile famiglia reggina dei Francoperta; nel 1589, a causa di debiti e questioni di illegittimità, il feudo fu confiscato a Giovanni Francoperta e venduto all'asta dal Sacro Regio Consiglio per 15.180 ducati alla famiglia degli Alberti insieme al titolo di marchesi.
La dominazione degli Alberti, nonostante i tragici eventi legati alla cosiddetta Strage degli Alberti, durò fino al 1760 quando il feudo fu venduto ai Clemente, già marchesi di San Luca, e da questi ai Ramirez nel 1823.
Nel 1783 Pentedattilo fu gravemente danneggiato da un devastante terremoto, e in seguito al sisma iniziò un costante flusso migratorio verso Melito Porto Salvo che perdurò sino al periodo risorgimentale; proprio a causa dello spopolamento nel 1811 il comune fu trasferito a Melito Porto Salvo e Pentedattillo ne divenne frazione.
A metà degli anni sessanta il paese fu completamente abbandonato fino ai primi anni ottanta, quando fu riscoperta da giovani ed associazioni. Iniziò così un lento cammino di recupero ad opera di volontari provenienti da tutta Europa.

Unique beaches with mountains and amazing food are the key to an spectacular vacation. We visited the beaches of Gioia Tauro, Scilla and Grotticelle. We hired a car and drove 700km of Italy's roads. Its hard work driving around the cities, you need eyes in the back of your head. The motorways are better, some great scenery to view, and roads that twist and turn through tunnels and over valleys and gorges. This was filmed whilst driving through Calabria. Paola - Calabria, Italy
If your train happened to stop in Paola (pronounced POWla), which is a key railroad stop on the train line running north/south on the western shore of Italy, you would not be tempted to check out the sites. This is because the area around the station is bleak and the main and older part of the town is about a mile uphill. The main piazza is bustling with cars and inhabitants on foot. The old town consists of several quaint and narrow streets lined with shops, restaurants and churches. Well worth a visit if you have a few hours to spare and prefer to see locals rather than tourists.

Reggio Calabria or simply Reggio in Southern Italy, is the biggest city and the most populated comune of Calabria, Southern Italy. It is the capital of the province of Reggio Calabria and the seat of the Regional Council of Calabria.
Reggio is located on the "toe" of the Italian Peninsula and is separated from the island of Sicily by the Strait of Messina. It is situated on the slopes of the Aspromonte, a long, craggy mountain range that runs up through the center of the region. The third economic center of mainland Southern Italy.
Lungomare is the beautiful promenade along the beach separated by the inland Corso Vittorio Emanuele by a small strip of botanical garden of palm trees. A few blocks inland (east) Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi is the main artery of Reggio.
During the summer Reggio is as dead in the daytime as a Sergio Leone movie. From 8 to 9pm Corso Garibaldi is full of people. After that everyone is at Lungomare.
Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia It is an Italian archaeological museum in Reggio Calabria with an archaeological collection from sites in Magna Grecia, the famous Bronzi di Riace bill be exhibited in the museum after its restoration
The Bronzi di Riace , the Bronzi di Riace are two famous full-size Greek bronze sculptures of nude bearded warriors, cast about 460–430 BCE, that were discovered by chance in 1972 in the waters of Riace Marina.
Pentedattilo. Pentedattilo is a stunning ancient village in southern Calabria near the sea with a splendid view of Mount Etna on Sicily. It is located about 45 minutes drive away from Reggio (the nearest destination that can be reached by public transport is Melito Porto Salvo or Saline Joniche). The village takes its name from ancient Greek origins. It is surrounded by five cliffs, which reminds the shape of five fingers (Gr. daktylos penta = five fingers). Today Pentedattilo is sometimes called a “Ghost Town” as it was almost fully abandoned by its inhabitants in favour of new homes near the coast. Every summer Pentedattilo hosts a Paleariza Festival, celebrating the Hellenistic culture. Between August and September a fascinating Inernational Short Film Festival takes place there
Scilla, (22 km north from Reggio Calabria). It is a stunning town of Greek origin located north of Reggio Calabria in front of the strait of Messina. Scilla is definately worth visiting becasue of the facsinating panoramic views over the Tyrrhenian Sea, historical presence and beautiful beach. Schilla is famous for sword fish, which has been fished there since Magna Greek times. The Ruffo Castle stands on the top of the famous cape which is wedged over the sea, leaving the beautiful beaches of Scilla, an annual tourist spot, on either side.
Aspromonte National Park This strip of granitic-crystalline origin resembles a giant pyramid. The area is near the sea and reaches 2,000 meters of height with its many mountain peaks and plateaus of marine sedimentary origins.Surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Park is enriched by considerable historical, artistic, and archaeological aspects, evidences of the archaic, classical, Greek, medieval, and modern culture. Points of attraction include the Gambarie ski resort (1,311 m) and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Polsi, in the comune of San Luca.

Back in Italy but this time we go all the way to the beautiful south!
Took a flight with Ryan air from Rome straight to Lamezia Terme were I met with my cousins.
We drove for an hour until we reached Gioia Tauro a small town by the coast in Reggio Calabria.
This is one of the most fantastic places I've ever been to.
Unique beaches with mountains and amazing food are the key to an spectacular vacation.
We visited the beaches of Gioia Tauro, Scilla and Grotticelle. Grtticelle beaing my favorit because of the landscape and the boats for rent that cost only 10€!
Do not doubt it for a second and take one of them so you can take it away from the beach and enjoy the amazing landscape in front of you.
Be careful with the jellyfish as this waters are the perfect environment for them. yeah, I got stung by one. LOL
I'm so thankful with my cousins and especially Salvattore and his family for letting me stay at their house and share those amazing days with them. I'll be back guys. I promise!

We hired a car and drove 700km of Italy's roads. Its hard work driving around the cities, you need eyes in the back of your head. The motorways are better, some great scenery to view, and roads that twist and turn through tunnels and over valleys and gorges.
This was filmed whilst driving through Calabria. Some of the tunnels are impressive, they go on for miles, carefully laid through mountains

This is because the area around the station is bleak and the main and older part of the town is about a mile uphill. The main piazza is bustling with cars and inhabitants on foot. The old town consists of several quaint and narrow streets lined with shops, restaurants and churches. Well worth a visit if you have a few hours to spare and prefer to see locals rather than tourists.
