Italy: 'Venetian Government' present their own currency - the San Marco coins
The pro-independence movement, the 'Venetian Government,' presented the first Venetian independent currency in a press conference in the city centre, Friday.
According to the movement leader Albert Gardin, the new coins are a response to "the oppression of the euro." He also said that he doesn't consider Venice as a region, but as an "occupied, suffocated and oppressed republic."

Italian lira
The lira (plural lire) was the currency of Italy between 1861 and 2002 and of the Albanian Kingdom between 1941 and 1943. Between 1999 and 2002, the Italian lira was officially a national subunit of the euro. However, cash payments could be made in lire only, as euro coins or notes were not yet available. The lira was also the currency of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy between 1807 and 1814.

Italian Police Shut Down Counterfeit Money Ring
Police in Naples have broken up a counterfeit money ring that allegedly printed millions worth of fake euro bills and coins distributed in Europe and North Africa.
Prosecutors said investigators seized 1 million euros ($1.2 million) in counterfeit notes in the course of the two-year investigation, along with a printing press able to produce high-quality fake bills and a minting press for 1-euro and 2-euro coins. Warrants were issued Wednesday for 56 people.
The ring was based in Naples, which prosecutors said has been recognized as the source of 90 percent of all counterfeit money circulated in the world.
The ring was so brazen, authorities said, that one suspect was distributing counterfeit bills while under house arrest for the same charge.

STORYLINE:
The Vatican state has joined 12 countries in Europe in switching to the new European currency, the euro.
The pontifical state has adapted quickly to trading in the euro.
The Vatican used the Italian lire from the beginning of the Italian Republic after the second World War but, like Italy, converted to the euro at the beginning of 2002.
From the end of this month, the Vatican will have its own specially minted euro coins carrying the image of Pope John Paul the second on the back.
Until then it is using Italian euro coins and banknotes.
The Vatican will not produce its own banknotes but will use Italian ones.
The Vatican has always had its own postal system, and produces its own stamps bearing images of Pope John Paul the second, holy relics and other religious images.
At this post office on St Peter's Square the stamps are now printed with both euro and lire prices.
And all books and religious souvenirs are now marked with prices in euros.
In St Peter's Square, many visitors toss their soon to be useless lire coins at the foot of this Christmas nativity scene, where people traditionally throw coins which are then collected up and donated to charity.

But above all it is a symbol that ties us together as a collective Italian and as single Italians. STORYLINE:
As 2001 comes to an end, Italians are getting rid of their lira and getting ready for the Euro.
At Rome's famous Trevi fountain, Italians and tourists tossed their last lira.
On the other side of the fountain, city workers used long vacuum-machines to suction out the coins, which will all be donated to charity.
At Rome's Quirinale Palace, a stage has been set up for Monday's end of the year Euro-concert.
Across the Piazza is a double exhibit - "The Long Road to the Euro" and "The Golden Lira".
The displays hold documents and old coins leading from the Roman empire to the unified Italian currency, the lira, ending with the new euro banknotes.
Exhibition organisers say the lira for Italians is a powerful symbol of national unity.
In addition, they say, just the mention of the lira stirs up emotions and memories among young and old Italians.
To properly honour their disappearing currency, the organisers have set up a national competition to design a monument to the lira.
The competition is open to everyone from artists to children.
The idea is to create a monument of bronze out of 200 lira coins.
It will be constructed in 2002 and placed at a location in Italy.
Italians have also dumped their lira coins in bins in banks and supermarkets.
Signs on the bins indicate the money will be donated for cancer research.
"The last good work of the lira", the signs says.
Banks in Italy are closed for four days while the changeover is being made from lira to euro.
While many Italians are saying a fond "arrivederci" to the lira, they will still be allowed to use the currency until the end of February.

STORYLINE:
In less than a month the euro will go into circulation around Europe.
The Italian public awareness campaign has intensified to hit all members of society from the old to the young.
The Italian children's program "melevisione" or "apple-vision" is running a special called "eurolilleri" to help children understand the change in currency.
It all takes place in the "fantabosca" or Fantasy Woods where various creatures are talking about getting rid of their old currencies and getting "eurolilleri."
And for adults there are a series of new television ads explaining how the changeover for lire to euro is going to work.
And for elderly Italians, local communities have organised special training sessions to familiarise the elderly with the new currency.
The public awareness campaign has also targeted teenagers.

The term originates from the value of a pound weight (Latin: libra) of high purity silver and as such is a direct cognate of the British pound sterling; in some countries, such as Cyprus and Malta, the words lira and pound were used as equivalents, before the euro was adopted in 2008 in the two countries. "L", sometimes in a double-crossed script form ("₤"), was the symbol most often used. Until the Second World War, it was subdivided into 100 centesimi (singular: centesimo), which translates to "hundredths".

Colosseum - New7Wonders of the World

The Colosseum or Coliseum (/kɒləˈsiːəm/ kol-ə-SEE-əm), also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre (Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium; Italian: Anfiteatro Flavio [amfiteˈaːtro ˈflaːvjo] or Colosseo [kolosˈsɛːo]), is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of concrete and stone, it is the largest amphitheatre ever built and is considered one of the greatest works of architecture and engineering.
The Colosseum is situated just east of the Roman Forum. Construction began under the emperor Vespasian in 72 AD, and was completed in 80 AD under his successor and heir Titus. Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian (81–96). These three emperors are known as the Flavian dynasty, and the amphitheatre was named in Latin for its association with their family name (Flavius).
The Colosseum could hold, it is estimated, between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators, having an average audience of some 65,000; it was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.
Although partially ruined because of damage caused by earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is still an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome. It is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions and has also links to the Roman Catholic Church, as each Good Friday the Pope leads a torchlit "Way of the Cross" procession that starts in the area around the Colosseum.
The Colosseum is also depicted on the Italian version of the five-cent euro coin.
