Afzal Guru, who was hanged on February 9, 2013 for his role in the 2001 attack on Parliament, and the lesser-known co-founder of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Maqbool Bhat, who was hanged in 1984, are "martyrs" in the Jawaharlal Nehru University.
The university turned into a battleground on Tuesday as the Right and the Left clashed when a group of Left-oriented students called a meet to commemorate the "judicial killing" of the duo. The situation turned violent and administration had to call in the police.

Over the past few days, Jawaharlal Nehru University campus in Delhi has turned into a galvanised flashpoint of student activism and demonstrations as people protest the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar, president of the students' union of the university, on charges of sedition and criminal conspiracy.
On Sunday, the campus saw one of the largest human chains in recent years when more than a thousand people turned up to join hands and line up across the university to protest against police action. This comes in the aftermath of allegations that "anti-national" and "divisive" slogans were raised here on February 9 during an event that saw discussions on the hanging of Afzal Guru and the right of Kashmiri people to self-determine their political future.
As police raids continue in areas surrounding the campus to track down other students named in the First Information Report filed by the Delhi Police, Sunday saw JNUSU Vice President Shehla Rashid breaking her silence on the issue with a fiery speech late in the night.
Addressing hundreds of students and activists gathered around her, Rashid spoke of the agitation that will "continue until the witchhunt at JNU stops".
The video above shows parts of her address where she opposes the allegation that JNU students are wasting taxpayers' money by indulging in "anti-national" activities.
"Sanghi trolls say that we should be ashamed of doing activism because we study on taxpayers' money," she said. "Yes, we survive on that money but we are fully aware of responsibility. We don't live on Adani's money or their helicopters and worship corporate lords. We are the taxpayers of this country and our tax is being doled out to bankrupt banks and corporations by the government of this country."
"The government of this country is conspiring to sell this nation to companies," she said.

Kanhaiya Kumar, the president of the JNU students' union, was taken for questioning and then arrested this afternoon. He has been charged with sedition and conspiracy.
The arrest came hours after Home Minister Rajnath Singh warned of "stringent action" against the organisers of the event. "Anyone who raises anti-India slogans or tries to put a question mark on nation's unity and integrity will not be spared," the home minister said, adding that he had instructed the police to take strongest possible action.
The police searched the JNU campus in South Delhi for more students suspected to be involved in the event.
The police swooped down on the prestigious institution as protests raged on campus and near India Gate in the heart of Delhi over the event organized on Tuesday to mark the death anniversary of Afzal Guru.
Anti-India slogans were allegedly raised during the event, titled "The country without a post office", in which students organized an exhibition and a protest march.
The university claims it cancelled permission for the event, which was allegedly pitched as a cultural function. Vice-Chancellor Jagdeesh Kumar has called it an act of indiscipline.
The BJP's student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held protests and demanded action against the university and the students behind the Afzal Guru event.
Education Minister Smriti Irani also condemned the incident and said: "The nation can never tolerate any insult to mother India."
The student's arrest has drawn sharp reactions from opposition parties. Left leader Sitaram Yechury tweeted: What is happening in JNU? Police on campus, arrests and picking up students from hostels. This had last happened during Emergency."
This is not the first time that JNU, one of the country's top academic institutions, has witnessed events in support of Afzal Guru.

Jawaharlal Nehru University, also known as JNU, is located in New Delhi, the capital of India. It is mainly a research oriented postgraduate university with approximately 8,000 students and a faculty strength of around 550.
The university was established in 1969 by an act of parliament. It was named after Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, and was founded by Indira Gandhi, (Nehru's daughter), and G. Parthasarathy was the first-vice-chancellor.

The son of moderate nationalist leader and Congressman Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru became a leader of the left wing of the Congress when fairly young. Subramanian Swamy (born 15 September 1939 in Chennai, India sometimes spelt Subramaniam Swamy) is an Indian politician, academician and an economist. He is the President of the Janata Party of India. He also presently serves as chairman of the SCMS Board of Governors of the SCMS Group of Educational Institutions in Kerala.
Swamy has previously served as member of the Planning Commission of India and Cabinet Minister of India. He has written extensively on foreign affairs dealing largely with India-China, India-Pakistan and Indo-Israel relation and is also a published author.
In November 1978, Swamy was member of the Group of Eminent persons called to Geneva to prepare a report of the United Nations (UNCTAD) on Economic Co-operation between Developing countries (ECDC).Swamy simplified trade procedures and formulated a new export strategy which became the forerunner of trade reform adopted subsequently. In 1994, Swamy was appointed as Chairman of the Commission on Labour Standards and International Trade by then Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao. This was perhaps for the first time that an Opposition Party member was given a Cabinet rank post by the ruling party.

Over the past few days, Jawaharlal Nehru University campus in Delhi has turned into a galvanised flashpoint of student activism and demonstrations as people protest the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar, president of the students' union of the university, on charges of sedition and criminal conspiracy. On Sunday, the campus saw one of the largest human chains in recent years when more than a thousand people turned up to join hands and line up across the university to protest against police action. This comes in the aftermath of allegations that "anti-national" and "divisive" slogans were raised here on February 9 during an event that saw discussions on the hanging of Afzal Guru and the right of Kashmiri people to self-determine their political future. As police raids continue in areas surrounding the campus to track down other students named in the First Information Report filed by the Delhi Police, Sunday saw JNUSU Vice President Shehla Rashid breaking her silence on the issue with a fiery speech late in the night. Addressing hundreds of students and activists gathered around her, Rashid spoke of the agitation that will "continue until the witchhunt at JNU stops". The video above shows parts of her address where she opposes the allegation that JNU students are wasting taxpayers' money by indulging in "anti-national" activities. "Sanghi trolls say that we should be ashamed of doing activism because we study on taxpayers' money," she said. "Yes, we survive on that money but we are fully aware of responsibility. We don't live on Adani's money or their helicopters and worship corporate lords. We are the taxpayers of this country and our tax is being doled out to bankrupt banks and corporations by the government of this country." Kanhaiya Kumar, the president of the JNU students' union, was taken for questioning and then arrested this afternoon. He has been charged with sedition and conspiracy. The arrest came hours after Home Minister Rajnath Singh warned of "stringent action" against the organisers of the event. "Anyone who raises anti-India slogans or tries to put a question mark on nation's unity and integrity will not be spared," the home minister said, adding that he had instructed the police to take strongest possible action. The police searched the JNU campus in South Delhi for more students suspected to be involved in the event. The police swooped down on the prestigious institution as protests raged on campus and near India Gate in the heart of Delhi over the event organized on Tuesday to mark the death anniversary of Afzal Guru. Anti-India slogans were allegedly raised during the event, titled "The country without a post office", in which students organized an exhibition and a protest march. The university claims it cancelled permission for the event, which was allegedly pitched as a cultural function. Vice-Chancellor Jagdeesh Kumar has called it an act of indiscipline. The BJP's student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held protests and demanded action against the university and the students behind the Afzal Guru event. Education Minister Smriti Irani also condemned the incident and said: "The nation can never tolerate any insult to mother India." The student's arrest has drawn sharp reactions from opposition parties. Left leader Sitaram Yechury tweeted: What is happening in JNU? Police on campus, arrests and picking up students from hostels. Over the past few days, Jawaharlal Nehru University campus in Delhi has turned into a galvanised flashpoint of student activism and demonstrations as people protest the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar, president of the students' union of the university, on charges of sedition and criminal conspiracy.
On Sunday, the campus saw one of the largest human chains in recent years when more than a thousand people turned up to join hands and line up across the university to protest against police action. This comes in the aftermath of allegations that "anti-national" and "divisive" slogans were raised here on February 9 during an event that saw discussions on the hanging of Afzal Guru and the right of Kashmiri people to self-determine their political future.
As police raids continue in areas surrounding the campus to track down other students named in the First Information Report filed by the Delhi Police, Sunday saw JNUSU Vice President Shehla Rashid breaking her silence on the issue with a fiery speech late in the night.
Addressing hundreds of students and activists gathered around her, Rashid spoke of the agitation that will "continue until the witchhunt at JNU stops".
The video above shows parts of her address where she opposes the allegation that JNU students are wasting taxpayers' money by indulging in "anti-national" activities.
"Sanghi trolls say that we should be ashamed of doing activism because we study on taxpayers' money," she said. "Yes, we survive on that money but we are fully aware of responsibility. We don't live on Adani's money or their helicopters and worship corporate lords. We are the taxpayers of this country and our tax is being doled out to bankrupt banks and corporations by the government of this country."
"The government of this country is conspiring to sell this nation to companies," she said.

Kanhaiya Kumar, the president of the JNU students' union, was taken for questioning and then arrested this afternoon. He has been charged with sedition and conspiracy.
The arrest came hours after Home Minister Rajnath Singh warned of "stringent action" against the organisers of the event. "Anyone who raises anti-India slogans or tries to put a question mark on nation's unity and integrity will not be spared," the home minister said, adding that he had instructed the police to take strongest possible action.
The police searched the JNU campus in South Delhi for more students suspected to be involved in the event.
The police swooped down on the prestigious institution as protests raged on campus and near India Gate in the heart of Delhi over the event organized on Tuesday to mark the death anniversary of Afzal Guru.
Anti-India slogans were allegedly raised during the event, titled "The country without a post office", in which students organized an exhibition and a protest march.
The university claims it cancelled permission for the event, which was allegedly pitched as a cultural function. Vice-Chancellor Jagdeesh Kumar has called it an act of indiscipline.
The BJP's student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held protests and demanded action against the university and the students behind the Afzal Guru event.
Education Minister Smriti Irani also condemned the incident and said: "The nation can never tolerate any insult to mother India."
The student's arrest has drawn sharp reactions from opposition parties. Left leader Sitaram Yechury tweeted: What is happening in JNU? Police on campus, arrests and picking up students from hostels. This had last happened during Emergency."
This is not the first time that JNU, one of the country's top academic institutions, has witnessed events in support of Afzal Guru.

"How can some students make a hero out of someone who criticises the country and is currently out on bail?" Kher said in his address to students in JNU.
"Someone who has returned on bail is not an Olympic hero," Kher said without naming JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya.
"I want the focus to be shifted back from kranti (revolution) to desh bhakti (nationalism)," said Kher amid chants of Bharat Mata Ki Jai from some of the students inside the JNU campus.
Last week, Kher had claimed that the JNU authorities had refused to give permission to screen his film. The university had rubbished the actor's statement.
Hours before the actor's visit to JNU, a Delhi court granted bail for six months to Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, arrested last month for sedition.
The court, while granting the relief to the two doctoral students from JNU, asked them to furnish a personal bond of Rs 25,000 each. The court also asked the two not to leave Delhi during the period of their bail.
