Looking for some redundant storage? DowerChin.com looks at Western Digital's MyBook Duo, an external hard drive that attaches via USB3 to your computer. It contains 2 drives, which when setup, can be a mirror, which means if one drive fails, your data should be safe on the second drive. In this video I take a look at the drive, set it up, simulate a drive failure, and rebuild the disk.
I know there are plenty of options out there, including building your own from scratch, but I wanted something quick and easy, that isn't noise, to store my personal photos and videos.

Leider muss ich nach mehreren Tagen testen sagen, dass sich das NAS von dieser Firma absolut zu wenig eignet. Die Performance ist derart schlecht, dass es wirklich keinen Spaß macht, damit zu arbeiten. Besonders, wenn zum Beispiel 2 Computer parallel auf dies Gerät zugreifen, blockieren sich die beiden Zugriffe gegenseitig, und die Zugriffsgeschwindigkeit, sowie die Transferraten brechen extremst ein (5 Mbyte/Sekunde). (Warum genau langsam unter Apple Mac, siehe hier: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F9lvlh8d1Q)
Das ganze Gerät ist in Performance und Geschwindigkeit ein Witz! Ich kann hier nur ein wirklich davon abraten. Ich rate euch, deswegen greift zu einer externen Festplatte, die über USB, über FireWire, oder über ESATA angeschlossen ist.
Auch ist das Zugriffs-Geräusch derart laut und nervig, dass ich nur empfehlen kann, das Ding fern ab von dem regelmäßigen Arbeitsplatz zu verwenden. Ja, man hört sehr laut die Zugriffe.
Die einzige Verwendung, die ich mir vorstellen kann, bei diesem Gerät, ist es zum Beispiel in den Keller zu packen! Da hat man es nicht, und da kann es praktisch lärmend vor sich hin knattern. Bei großen Dateien erreicht man sogar bis zu 40 MB/s Transferrate! Immer in der Voraussetzung, dass große Dateien übertragen werden, und auch sonst nichts anderes zu diesem Zeitpunkt auf das Gerät darauf zugreift. Das Übertragen von kleineren Dateien, wie Fotos, ist auch unglaublich langsam!
Und ja, ich habe das Gerät unter Ubuntu, genauso wie unter Mac ausführlich getestet kann nur sagen: Nicht zu empfehlen!
Ich habe nach diesen Erfahrungen mich dazu entschlossen, die Festplatte nicht zu verwenden, und auch zurück zu schicken.

In this episode, John will talk about a controversial video that recently appeared online that coconuts aren't vegan because it involves slave monkeys harvesting the coconuts in Thailand.
John will share his coconuts that were not harvested by monkeys and that are vegan, but more importantly, open another can of worms, if other plant foods, such as almonds, lettuce, conventional strawberries, organic strawberries are even vegan?
In the end, being vegan to me is not about an all or nothing attitude but to do the best you can to minimize the harm to other earthlings on our planet. As long as business and money is involved, profits are put before your values.
