There is a debate among experts and the general public on how to pronounce specific years of the 21st century in English. The year 2010 is pronounced either "two thousand (and) ten", or "twenty-ten". 2010 was the first year to have a wide variation in pronunciation, as the years 2000 to 2009 were generally pronounced "two thousand (and) one, two, three, etc." as opposed to the less common "twenty-oh-_".

Beginners is a 2010 American romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Mike Mills. It tells the story of Oliver, a man reflecting on the life and death of his father, Hal, while trying to forge a new romantic relationship with a woman, Anna, dealing with father issues of her own. The film is based on the true-life coming out of Mills's father at the age of 75, five years before his death.

Beginners premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, where the Los Angeles Times heralded it as a "heady, heartfelt film" with a cast who have "a strong sense of responsibility to their real-world counterparts".Christopher Plummer received numerous accolades, including the 2011 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for his performance.

Plot

The film is structured as a series of interconnected flashbacks. Following the death of his father Hal, Oliver reflects on their relationship following the death of Oliver's mother, Georgia. Shortly after her death, Hal came out to his son and began exploring life as an openly gay man. He becomes active in the gay community, finds love and becomes more honest with himself and with his son. As a result, Oliver and Hal become closer during this time. Shortly after Hal's death, Oliver meets Anna, a French actress, at a party. Inspired by his father's attitude towards the end of his life and their relationship, Oliver decides to pursue a romance with her.

Christopher Plummer

Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer CC (born December 13, 1929) is a Canadian theatre, film and television actor. After making his film debut in 1958's Stage Struck, Plummer went on to a successful film career that has spanned over five decades. Some of his most notable film performances include roles in films such as The Sound of Music (1965), Battle of Britain (1969), Waterloo (1970), The Return of the Pink Panther (1975), Murder by Decree (1979), Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), A Beautiful Mind (2001), Nicholas Nickleby (2002), The New World (2005), Inside Man (2006), Up (2009), The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011). He has notably portrayed several historical figures including Rudyard Kipling in The Man Who Would Be King (1975), Mike Wallace in The Insider (1999), and Leo Tolstoy in The Last Station (2009).

In a career that includes substantial roles in each of the dramatic arts, Plummer is probably best known to film audiences as the aristocratic widower Captain Georg von Trapp in the hit 1965 musical film The Sound of Music alongside Julie Andrews. Plummer has also ventured into various television projects, including the miniseries The Thorn Birds.
