Effigy

An effigy is a representation of a specific person in the form of sculpture or some other three-dimensional medium. The use of the term is normally restricted to certain contexts in a somewhat arbitrary way: recumbent effigies on tombs are so called, but standing statues of individuals, or busts, are usually not. Likenesses of religious figures in sculpture are not normally called effigies. Effigies are common elements of funerary art, especially as a recumbent effigy (in a lying position) in stone or metal placed on a tomb, or a less permanent "funeral effigy", placed on the coffin in a grand funeral, wearing real clothing. Figures, often caricature in style, that are damaged, destroyed or paraded in order to harm the person represented by magical means, or merely to mock or insult them or their memory, are also called effigies.

It is common to burn an effigy of a person ("burn in effigy") as an act of protest.

The word comes, perhaps via French, from the Latin, meaning "representation", and originally was used in English in the plural only – even a single image was "the effigies of ..." The word occurs in Shakespeare's As You Like It of 1600 (II, vii, 193), though it first appeared in 1539. "In effigie" was probably understood as a Latin phrase until the 18th century.

Fictional character biography

Origins

Raised in Seattle, Washington, by his alcoholic father after his mother had died, Martyn Van Wyck was a bitter and resentful man. Constantly in conflict with authority figures, he aspired to a career as a musician, but could not obtain even menial work in the music industry.

Outside Seattle, Van Wyck was abducted by aliens: Controllers, an alien race that had originated on Maltus and had split from the Guardians of the Universe some three billion years ago. Van Wyck only retained vague memories of being in a room with figures standing over him. Six days later, Van Wyck was found in the middle of the road, naked and confused. He was taken to the nearest emergency room, where the doctors found nothing wrong with him except that his eyes had changed from blue to a flame-like flickering orange.

Meeting with his friends, Van Wyck told them all he knew about his condition. When the owner of the coffee shop they were sitting in asked them to leave, Van Wyck responded with a beast made out of flame. He realized he could do anything he wanted with his newfound powers. Outside the coffee shop, an argument with a driver was quickly won by Van Wyck when he torched the man's car. In his anger, Van Wyck had transformed. His skin had turned white, while his hair turned to flame and he was dressed in a red costume. He also found that he was able to fly. It was later revealed the Controllers were attempting to create superhuman beings to replace their Darkstars.

Effigy (album)

Effigy is a 2003 album by Nomy Lamm. It combines accordion, layered vocals, sound effects, and electro-driven drum beats. Lamm's official website states the creative purpose of the album was "to create a heartfelt goodbye to her hometown and its control over her". In the summer of 2003 the album was produced as a full-length theatrical rock show, and Lamm went on the road with it while performing songs from the album.

Gonzalez (band)

Gonzalez were a British R&B and funk band. They became well known as a backing band for touring R&B, funk and soul stars. Their eponymous album was released in 1974 and they recorded a total of six albums before disbanding in 1986, and are best known for their 1977 single success with their worldwide disco hit, "Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet".

History

The original band was formed by Godfrey McLean and Bobby Tench in 1970 and included other members of Gass, with the line-up of Tench as vocalist and guitarist, drummer Godfrey McLean, bassist Delisle Harper and percussionist Lennox Langton. At the end of May 1970, Tench left Gonzalez to became a member of The Jeff Beck Group and the band formed a new core membership, with saxophonists Michael "Mick" Eve (born 21 December 1937, Walthamstow, East London), Chris Mercer, Steve Gregory, Geoffrey "Bud" Beadle (born 27 March 1947), keyboardist Roy Davies and guitarist Gordon Hunte. Later George Chandler, Glen LeFleur, Cliff Lake and Delisle Harper were included whilst simultaneously members of The Olympic Runners. Vocalist Lenny Zakatek joined in 1974 and they released their first album Gonzalez (1974), which featured a heavy funk sound. This album made them Queen bassist John Deacon's favourite band in the middle 1970s.Our Only Weapon is Our Music (1975) followed, released on EMI's sister label, Capitol.
