It's a very simple concept, but it takes a lot of patience to make everything work properly. I didn't bother to show 95% of the "fit" process because that would make for a very long, very boring video. Lightly sand, check, repeat... its very time consuming. The sides are Walnut, the rest is Cherry, the key is Purple Heart. For the hinge I used brass rod and the finish is shown in great detail in one of my other videos (link below). The pocket in the secret compartment was cut on my custom Shapeoko 2 (link below). The cut line on the compartment side are slightly visible if you are up close and looking for them. It’s pulled up, flipped around and pushed back in to compress the wooden spring and release the compartment. The inside of the secret compartment was finished with suede flock. The lid had a hole from a knot and was filled with epoxy. The finish used was Circa 1850 Antique Paste Varnish. This is my entry to summer's woodworking 2015 2x4 challenge. I made a floating shelf with a hidden compartment. The hinges I found at Home Depot :5/8 in. x 3 in. Non-Mortise Concealed Spring Hinge. The magnetic locks are just plain old child safety cabinet magnetic locks. I found them at Walmart. The hinges are about 6 dollars each and the locks, I paid 20 dollars for 4. I show how to make a secret compartment in the bottom of a candle. This project uses a regular candle that is modified by drilling out a compartment into the bottom. The compartment is then sealed with a plug that can either be made of foam, cardboard or melted into a disk from the wax that was removed. A sticker, candle label or circle of paper is then glued to the bottom of the candle covering the plug and hiding whatever is inside. This is a pretty simple project that can be done by using a drill and hole saw bit to save time but you can also carve out the inner compartment with a sharp knife. The candle will still work like normal just be careful not to let it burn all the way down as it will reveal whatever is hidden inside. The compartment is hidden in the top support and is roughly 1.25" deep. The top is released by pressing the top left button in which releases a pin anchored into the top. The five other buttons were disassembled and are just accent pieces. The buttons were off the shelf items from Lee Valley. I would have made my own buttons, but couldn't find a small metal lathe in my price range before the deadline of the contest. The finish is Circa 1850 Paste Varnish. I show how to make a secret compartment in a drawer. This can be useful but is also simply awesome to have. It is pretty easy to make and at first glance will be undetectable. A secret compartment in a drawer is only obvious to the owner of the drawer and doesn't require a key or combination. It loses its secrecy only if it's easy to spot, so a good secret compartment is modestly sized and well-camouflaged. Build a false bottom to match the rest of the drawers in a set and keep it shallow, no more than an inch or two. I have made one these a while ago but decided to make a "How to" type video. A false bottom is an internal partition in a container, typically at the bottom of a drawer, suitcase or similar item, enabling the concealment of objects from a cursory examination of the item's contents. I welded 1" x 3" steel tube to make the "X" table frame and used 2" thick mahogany boards to make the top of the table. I changed the plan from the initial drawing. I was going to put a wood shelf at the bottom but I changed my mind and decided to put a steel bar across the middle. This is when I decided to incorporate my bolt that has a secret compartment. "A man was arrested in Ohio this week under a new law that prohibits hidden compartments in vehicles, though no drugs or contraband were found in the car. The state's new hidden compartment law is designed to target criminals who use hidden compartments in vehicles to hide drugs or weapons, WKYC reports.
