Big World is a 1986 live album of original songs by Joe Jackson. The album was recorded in front of an invited audience at the Roundabout Theatre in New York City on 22–25 January 1986. The songs are loosely linked by lyrics covering a general theme of post-World-War-2 international relations and global travel.
Jackson's intent for the recording was to capture the intensity and spontaneity of a live performance, but without the distraction of noise from the crowd. He requested that the audience remain silent while his performance was recorded, so no applause is heard. In the manner of a remote broadcast, the music was mixed live from microphones on each musical instrument, and sent directly to a stereo digital tape recorder. Unlike most remote recordings, no post-recording mixing or overdubbing was performed. The individual tracks were selected from performances on various nights.
Regarding the production, Joe says: ‘I want to clear up two myths about this record which still crop up all the time. Myth 1: During the live recording of the album, the audience was forbidden to applaud. Fact: There was plenty of applause. We were just playing a lot of unfamiliar material, and recording it for an album, so the audience were asked to hold it until they were sure a song was finished. They understood this and there was no problem. Myth 2: It’s a double album with a side missing. Fact: This was my first album to be released on CD, where the running time was not an issue. I was having a hard time deciding what to leave out for the LP, though, and I suggested making a 3-sided one, and selling it for the price of a regular album. Much to my surprise, the record company said yes. So rather than a side missing, you got an extra side. Critics, of course, hadn’t had to pay for it.’

A Great Big World is an American musical duo from New York made up of singers and songwriters Ian Axel and Chad King and signed to Epic Records. The group is best known for their singles "This Is the New Year", which was performed by the cast in an episode of Glee and reached the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart in May 2013, and their international hit "Say Something", particularly after recording it as a duet collaboration with Christina Aguilera.
Ian Axel and Chad King met at New York University, where they were attending The Steinhardt Music Program. Both were music business students and Axel is said to have convinced King to write a song together. King agreed to work with Axel after hearing him sing. They both wrote and performed songs together prior to Axel embarking on a solo career in which he released an independent album featuring songs that were all co-written by King.
In 2011, their song This Is the New Year was licensed to various television networks and was used as the theme song for MTV's I Used to Be Fat as well as being featured on The Amazing Race, ESPN, One Tree Hill, and Good Morning America. Ian Axel and Chad King went on national tour and performed as the openers for Ingrid Michaelson, Matthew Morrison (Glee), and Five for Fighting.
She said goodbye to her parents' house
Kissed her Daddy while her mama cried
Boarded a train like a carousel
She hummed the song that the ice cream man played when he drove by
Oh my
She loves Ohio in the summertime
White picket fences offer no defenses
And the children laugh in the streets but that's not all she needs
Says, "There's a great big world out there and I wanna see it
There's a great big world out there and there's a place for me in it
Though I'll miss my mother and the friends I know
The light burns out if you wait too long
There's a great big world I see and it's waiting out there for me"
She hits the city with half a tank
In a car she bought from a ring she pawned
She spent the summer by happenstance
There was a boy who could read her thoughts with his deep brown eyes
Oh my
But when he'd drink he was a different kind
Though white picket fences shook her defenses
And children danced in her dreams
That's not all she needs
Says, "There's a great big world out there and I wanna see it
There's a great big world out there and there's a place for me in it
Though I'll miss my mother and the friends I know
The light burns out if you wait too long
There's a great big world I see and it's waiting out there for me"
I've never felt so alone
I've never felt so alive
I've never been so sure I could learn to fly
I've never felt so alone
I've never felt so alive
I've never been so sure I could learn to fly
Inside her wallet's a photograph
Of the place she's from and the ones she loves
But, "There's a great big world out there and I wanna see it
There's a great big world out there and there's a place for me in it
Though I'll miss my mother and the friends I know
The light burns out if you wait too long
There's a great big world I see and it's waiting out there for me"
I've never felt so alone
I've never felt so alive
I've never been so sure I could learn to fly
I've never felt so alone
I've never felt so alive
