17. Carthage - Empire of the Phoenicians
Buried beneath the city streets of the Tunisian capital of Tunis, an ancient city lies forgotten...
In this episode, we look at one of the most dramatic stories to come down to us from the ancient world: the rise and fall of the empire of Carthage. Find out how this city rose out of the Phoenician states of the Eastern Mediterranean, and set out on voyages of discovery and settlement that put them at the centre of the ancient world. And hear how the city of Carthage was destroyed, and its memory nearly wiped from the earth.

The Origins of the Phoenicians (DNA)
The Phoenicians emerged in the Northern Levant around 1800 BCE and by the 9th century BCE had spread their culture across the Mediterranean Basin, establishing trading posts, and settlements in various European Mediterranean and North African locations.
Despite their widespread influence, what is known of the Phoenicians comes from what was written about them by the Greeks and Egyptians.
In this study, we investigate the extent of Phoenician integration with the Sardinian communities they settled. We present 14 new ancient mitogenome sequences from pre-Phoenician (~1800 BCE) and Phoenician (~700–400 BCE) samples from Lebanon (n = 4) and Sardinia (n = 10) and compare these with 87 new complete mitogenomes from modern Lebanese and 21 recently published pre-Phoenician ancient mitogenomes ...

History of the Phoenicians: The Maritime Superpowers of the Mediterranean
The Phoenicians were the maritime superpowers of the Mediterranean. Their culture flourished and was at its most powerful between 1500 and 332 BCE when Alexander the Great entered the region and decimated the cities and their populations, bringing to an end the maritime superpower. The Phoenicians were a number of independent city-states that shared the same culture in the modern-day regions of Syria, Lebanon, and Northern Israel. The Phoenician alphabet was the first alphabet and is the basis for many western alphabets today.
The Phoenicians are probably best known for their production of purple dye which was accomplished by its extraction from the murex shellfish, a sea creature that pretty much became extinct in the region due to the popularity of the colour. The production of the dye ...

The Phoenicians remain one of the most enigmatic ancient civilizations, with historians and scholars prone to speculation and educated guesses. The Phoenicians were great writers, yet they left almost no documents. They may have been excellent sailors and naval commanders, yet they built no territorial empire. They were stellar artists, yet their work contains few original elements. They may have been clever builders, yet their monuments crumbled. And the Phoenicians were a single civilization, yet they were split into city-states.

How did the Phoenicians Colonize the Mediterranean Sea?
Phoenicia was a thalassocracy that existed as early as 2500 BC and held territory throughout the Levant. The Phoenicians were not necessarily members of one united nation, but instead, made up a series of independent city-states such as Tyre and Byblos; though they nonetheless served as some type of unified front when it came to the colonization of the Mediterranean.

We present 14 new ancient mitogenome sequences from pre-Phoenician (~1800 BCE) and Phoenician (~700–400 BCE) samples from Lebanon (n = 4) and Sardinia (n = 10) and compare these with 87 new complete mitogenomes from modern Lebanese and 21 recently published pre-Phoenician ancient mitogenomes from Sardinia to investigate the population dynamics of the Phoenician (Punic) site of Monte Sirai, in southern Sardinia.
Our results indicate evidence of continuity of some lineages from pre-Phoenician populations suggesting integration of indigenous Sardinians in the Monte Sirai Phoenician community.
We also find evidence of the arrival of new, unique mitochondrial lineages, indicating the movement of women from sites in the Near East or North Africa to Sardinia, but also possibly from non-Mediterranean populations and the likely movement of women from Europe to Phoenician sites in Lebanon. Combined, this evidence suggests female mobility and genetic diversity in Phoenician communities, reflecting the inclusive and multicultural nature of Phoenician society.

The Phoenicians were the maritime superpowers of the Mediterranean. Their culture flourished and was at its most powerful between 1500 and 332 BCE when
Alexander the Great entered the region and decimated the cities and their populations, bringing to an end the maritime superpower.
The production of the dye first began in Tyre during the Bronze Age, which is why it is known as Tyrian purple. Deposits of murex shells have been found on the outskirts of Sidon and Tyre, as well as at Phoenician colonies across the Mediterranean, including Carthage. Carthage began as a small hill community on the North African Coast which is now modern day Tunis and it's legendary founding of the city is dated to 814 BCE by the Phoenician Queen Elissa, better known as Queen Dido.

Digital epigraphy at the crossroads of the Mediterranean
This lecture took place on 10 June 2020 as part of the #BSROnlineLectures Series.
Jonathan Prag (Oxford, BSR)
The island of Sicily has long been recognised as a cultural melting pot at the heart of the ancient Mediterranean. The epigraphic (inscribed) texts from the island offer a unique window onto the history and culture of the peoples of the island, from the beginnings of Greek and Phoenician colonisation through to the transformations of late antiquity. These texts, on stone, metal and other materials, run into the thousands, and are written in half-a-dozen different languages. The potential offered by this corpus of material is now gradually being realised through the application of digital methods of recording and analysis. Professor Jonathan Prag (University of Oxford) will prese...

Professor Jonathan Prag (University of Oxford) will present the initial work of the I.Sicily project to build a complete digital corpus for the island, and some of the results of that project – as well as looking forward to the next stage in this exploration of the island’s history and culture through the ERC-funded ‘Crossroads’ project (2020-2025).
