Yavne (Hebrew: יַבְנֶה), Jabneh, or Jamnia in some English texts, is a city in the Central District of Israel. According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), at the end of 2013 the city had a population of 36,980.
Yavne was one of the major ancient cities in the southern coastal plain, situated 20 km (12.43 mi) south of Jaffa, 15 km (9.32 mi) north of Ashdod, and 7 km (4.35 mi) east of the Mediterranean.
Excavations were carried out on the ancient tell (mound created by accumulation of archaeological remains) known as Tel Yavne (Hebrew) or Yebna (Arabic), which developed on a natural kurkar hill. The tell was inhabited, possibly continuously, from either the Bronze or Iron Age until the British Mandate period. During some periods, especially the Byzantine period, the settlement expanded to cover part of the plain and hills surrounding the tell. Yavneh is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and it is documented in written sources and through archaeological excavations on the main tell and the adjacent "Temple Hill" throughout the ages.

Summer vacation is time for Israelis to visit family and friends in different parts of the country. If you are lucky enough to live in "tourist country" like we do in Yavne'el near Tiberias, or our cousin Bina in Zichron Yaakov, then you can expect a lot of visitors. Zichron, as it is affectionately known, is one of the oldest towns in Israel, and was founded in 1882 by Baron Rothschild who named it after his father, Yaakov. The Baron also founded our town Yavne'el in 1901. Zichron Yaakov is home to the Carmel winery and has become a well developed tourist town. It's home to a sizeable anglo population. Our cousin Bina's family were early settlers to the region, first in Atlit and then in Binyamina where they operated restaurants and finally in Zichron.

The most amazing view of the Sea of Galilee can be enjoyed by your family only a few minutes from Hamat Gader on the Golan Heights. On a clear day over Pesach we were able to see the entire Lake Kinneret, the Jordan Valley, Zemach, Kibbutz Kinneret, Yavne'el, Mount Tavor, Tiberias, Arbel, Meron, Tsfat, Migdal, and even the snow on top of Mount Hermon! In the spring you'll see wildflowers everywhere. There is a short hike of about 20 minutes through wild fruit trees down to an old man-made pool fed by a natural spring. The Syrian soldiers made many of these pools for officers stationed on the Golan Heights before 1973 so they could cool off in the hot summers. The site is run by Kibbutz Haruv and is free. There is a restaurant, gift shop and snack bar on the premises. It's...
