Tracey Anne Thorn (born 26 September 1962) is an English pop singer and songwriter. She is best known as being one half of the duo Everything but the Girl, who are currently on extended hiatus.
Thorn was born in Brookmans Park, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. She grew up in Hatfield and studied English at the University of Hull, where she graduated in 1984 with First Class Honours. She later took an MA degree at Birkbeck College, University of London.
After 28 years as a couple, Thorn and her partner Ben Watt married in 2009 at Chelsea Registry Office. They live in Hampstead, North London. The couple have twin daughters born in 1998 and a son born in 2001.
Thorn will release her autobiography in early 2013.
Thorn began her musical career in the punk-pop hybrid group Stern Bops playing guitar and providing some vocal backing.
Thorn then joined Marine Girls playing guitar and sharing vocals. The band released two albums (Beach Party in 1981 and Lazy Ways in 1982) and several singles. The group disbanded when Thorn decided to concentrate on her studies at Hull, and on Everything but the Girl.
Benjamin Brian Thomas Watt (born 6 December 1962, Barnes, London) is a British musician, DJ, and record producer, best known as one half of the duo, Everything but the Girl.
Watt is the son of British bandleader Tommy Watt and has four half brothers and sisters. He is the youngest of the family. Watt lives with his spouse and creative partner Tracey Thorn in Hampstead, North London. They met at Hull University in 1981 and after 28 years as a couple, in 2009, they married at the Chelsea Registry Office. They have twin daughters, Jean and Alfie, born in 1998, and a son, Blake, born in 2001.
Watt began recording in 1981 on the indie label Cherry Red - and went on to make the album North Marine Drive, a collection of folk-jazz solo recordings in 1983. He then joined forces with vocalist Tracey Thorn. For 18 years they wrote and recorded together - creating nine studio albums as Everything but the Girl (EBTG), signing to Warners in 1984, and then Virgin in 1995. These albums and many of their singles achieved UK and US chart success, the song "Missing" reaching number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1995. In the mid-nineties, the band shifted focus from alt-pop towards electronica, charting with Walking Wounded, Protection (with Massive Attack), Temperamental and other work.
What you do
Raise the roof
Everybody
Wants you to
And you do it with
And you do it with
And you do it with
And you do it with love
When you do
That thing you do
Love comes through
You raise the roof
Put the music on
Put the music on
Put the music on
They all wanna dance
Can do anything?
If you dare
Don't mean a thing
Unless you care
And you do it with
And you do it with
And you do it with
And you do it with love
All those years I wasted
Sitting on my own
Think what I could have tasted
If I'd only known
Why did I wait?
Why did I wait?
Don't tell me it's too late
Why did I wait?
Don't tell me it's too late
So open up
Before you start
Open hand
Open heart
Bring it on
Bring it on
Bring it on
Bring it on home
Bring it on home
Bring it on home
Why did I wait?
Why did I wait?
Don't tell me it's too late
Don't tell me it's too late
Don't tell me it's too late
Don't tell me it's too late
Who's next?
Who's next?
Always the ones the ones that you least expect
They seem so strong
It turned out she wanted more all along
And each time I hear who's to part
I examine my heart
See how it stands
Wonder if it's still in safe hands
Who's fled?
Who's fled?
Who's been caught out in somebody's bed?
I should have guessed
That day that his phone wouldn't take your text
He was a chamer
I wish him bad karma
Oh, I know we shouldn't take sides
But that one was his fault
This one is her fault
No one gets off without paying the ride
And oh, the divorces!
And oh, oh, oh
The honeymoon, the wedding ring
Oh, oh oh
The afternoon handovers by the swings
Oh yes, oh yes
Your song seemed to look through a different lens
You're still so young
Loving's just as easy as it's begun
Now there's kids to tend
The legal biz
And custody
And oh, the divorces!
And this one is different
And each one of course is
And always the same
Oh, the divorces!
Who's next?
Just this once
Let me tell you you?re the sweetest thing
The love in every song I sing
Music in my ears and everything
Happiness writes white
Maybe that isn?t true tonight
And things you know you might forget
And other things I haven?t told you yet
Close your eyes, count to ten
Turn around back again
Hit the floor, then once more
I?m still here
And it?s all true
And it?s all true
We don?t need
Any kind of big parade
Just this once, a little serenade
To celebrate this love we?ve made
We don?t need
Don?t need a big fanfare
This is just my heart laid bare
For anyone who might care
Go away 'round the world
Talk to all kinds of girls
But it?s me you won?t find
And you?re mine
Close your eyes, count to ten
Turn around back again
Hit the floor, then once more
I?m still here
And it?s all true
And it?s all true
Do you feel it too?
And it?s all true
And it's all true
Boy, I think you've come home
Open up the door and step inside
So many people who feel the way you do
Their sweetest dreams have always been denied
Lock the past into a box and throw away the key
And leave behind those days of endless night
Everyone is waiting, everyone is here
Step out of the woods into the light
Everybody loves you here
Everybody loves you here
Everybody loves you here
Everybody loves you here
Boy, you've been on the wrong road
Wearing someone else's shoes
Who told you you were not what you were meant to be?
And got you paying someone else's dues?
This is the place for you just look around this room
Is anybody here made out of stone?
Down among the heretic
The losers and the saints
You are here amongst your own
You've come home, you've come home
You've come home, you've come home
You've come home
Look at this hole inside your heart
No one can ever fill
It's like the Grand Canyon
Look at this gap that's opened up
Between you and the world
It's like the Grand Canyon
Look at this hole inside your heart
It's like the Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon
Everybody loves you here
Everybody loves you here
Everybody loves you here
Everybody loves you here
You've come home, you've come home
You've come home, you've come home
