INGREDIENTS: rum, espresso powder, sugar, water, vanilla bean
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Cold brew coffee -- combine 1/4 cup of espresso powder & 2 and 1/2 cups of water. Shake it up, then refrigerate for 12 hours.
2. Make simple syrup -- 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water. Boil until the sugar dissolves, stirring occasionally. (WATCH SIMPLE SYRUP VIDEO HERE -- http://youtu.be/Wf_9-IEhTL4) Allow simple syrup to cool before moving to next step.
3. Put it all together -- Add simple syrup to the coffee. Add 1 and 1/2 cups of rum. Add 1 vanilla bean (open it up before adding).
4. Let this sit for 3-4 days. OPTIONAL: Add glycerin to finish (this thickens the mixture). Stir and taste. Bottle your coffee liqueur (& add a bit of vanilla bean into each bottle).

The other day I wanted to make a Black Russian for the Mrs. and that cocktail required Coffee Liquor (AKA Kahlúa). After making my bride her libation I found myself out of said spirit. So instead of gong out and buying another bottle, I decided use my bar tending skills to make my own. Its really simple to do, cheaper then buying it at the liquor store and the taste of the finished product is much better and way more intense. Anyway, enough prose. Enjoy the show!!! Step-by-step recipe follows:
How To Make Home Made Kahlúa STEP-BY-STEP RECIPE:
Ingredients:
1) 1.5 Cups Dark Rum
2) 750 ml Vodka
3) 12 oz Medium Roast Coffee
4) Zest of 1 Medium Orange
5) 1 Cinnamon Stick 6) 2 Whole Vanilla Beans
7) 1.5 Cups Turbinado Sugar
8) 1 Tsp. Dutch Milled Cocoa Powder
9) 1/3 to 1/2 Cup Simple Syrup (to taste)
Prep. & Storage:
Add all ingredients to a 1 gallon jug, seal the cap and allow the ingredients to sit for 3 - 4 weeks shaking the jug daily. Strain the contents of the jug into a fresh clean Bottle and enjoy. Store in a light protected area so a color change does not occur.
NOTE: Simple syrup can be added to your infusion if you want a sweeter product.

When we started this process of figuring out how to make coffee liqueur at home, we found most of the recipes were too sweet, and lacked complexity of flavour. They all had only one note - and it was weak coffee flavoured vodka. It just didn't work for us.
So we started with fresh dark roasted coffee beans that we gently smashed in a mortar and pestle. We then added ½ a vanilla bean, and bathed this in 151º over proof rum. You really want to layer flavour over flavour, and the higher alcohol helps dissolve more of the oils in the coffee - it also keeps the final product from being to cloyingly sweet when you dilute it later with simple syrup. Rounding out the complex flavour profile is a cinnamon stick, some orange peel, and crushed cocoa nibs. The Dude would be proud!
Ingredients:
2 cups 151º overproof rum (75.5% alc)
1 cup dark roast ground coffee (we just smash in a mortar and pestle)
1/2 vanilla bean
½ cinnamon stick
2- 3 cocoa nibs, optional
1 slice of orange peel, optional
simple syrup
Method:
Slice the vanilla bean it open lengthwise and then scrape out the inside of the bean. Place the bean, scrapings, course ground coffee and rum to a sealable Mason jar. Give it a shake and set it aside someplace dark. After 24 open the jar and toss in the cinnamon stick, cracked cocoa nibs, and orange peel. Give it a shake and set aside for another day.
Strain the mixture through a coffee filter, and mix in the simple syrup… Now this is another place where your personal taste will come into play. We like ours on the less sweet side so we start by mixing 1 part simple syrup to 3 parts coffee infusion; then we taste and start adjusting form there. Ideally you want to end up with about 40% alc by volume.

Usually, I only use Kahlua in desserts and cakes because I find it too sweet for drinks and the coffee is not really to my taste.
So I did a bit of research and combined my 2 favourite liquids (Coffee and Vodka) into this home-made recipe for Coffee Liqueur.
It still retains the sweetness and alcohol, but what I get now is the beautiful flavour and aroma of my own preferred coffee in my liqueur.

This simple Scotch cocktail is made with The Black Grouse (Peaty Blended Scotch Whisky), St. George NOLA Coffee Liqueur, Soda Water and a Lemon Twist. It is as easy to make as it is to drink. It's the improved, Whisky version of a Black Russian, which is a White Russian (https://youtu.be/FsBmI5v5xbs) without the cream.
The name of the drink is an allusion to the Scottish tartan. (The one the picture is close, but not the same.) It's probably just there to evoke some Scottish imagery and get you in the mood for a Scotch cocktail.
Like most Scotch cocktails, this one is usually made with a blended Scotch (a blend of single malts with grain alcohol added), but this one benefits from a Scotch with an emphasis on the smoky flavors. The Black Grouse is the best of both world's. It is smokier than your average blend. It's also pretty affordable.
The Coffee Liqueur you use will have a big impact on the drink, so choose wisely. My favorite, by far is the NOLA Coffee Liqueur from St. George Spirits. It is not as well known as Kahlua and not a widely available, but it's definitely worth hunting down this bottle.
The soda water is optional. The drink is not really fizzy. The soda water just gives the drink a little dilution, which will help if the flavors are too strong for you.
The lemon twist is important. It transforms the drink and brightens it up in unexpected ways. The deep heavy flavors of Scotch and coffee get a livened up with the lemon oils. It's like adding a lemon twist to an Italian espresso. Try it both ways. I think you'll agree. Besides, this one is easy to drink so, I'm sure you'll figure out to do with the second cocktail. Slàinte mhath!
Recipe:
1.5 oz Scotch Whisky
0.75 oz Coffee Liqueur
top Soda (optional)
garnish Lemon Twist
Build in chilled rocks glass over large ice. Add Scotch and Coffee Liqueur. Top with soda (optional). Garnish with Lemon Twist.

This simple Scotch cocktail is made with The Black Grouse (Peaty Blended Scotch Whisky), St. George NOLA Coffee Liqueur, Soda Water and a Lemon Twist. It is as easy to make as it is to drink. It's the improved, Whisky version of a Black Russian, which is a White Russian (https://youtu.be/FsBmI5v5xbs) without the cream. The name of the drink is an allusion to the Scottish tartan. (The one the picture is close, but not the same.) It's probably just there to evoke some Scottish imagery and get you in the mood for a Scotch cocktail. Like most Scotch cocktails, this one is usually made with a blended Scotch (a blend of single malts with grain alcohol added), but this one benefits from a Scotch with an emphasis on the smoky flavors. The Black Grouse is the best of both world's. It is smokier than your average blend. It's also pretty affordable. The Coffee Liqueur you use will have a big impact on the drink, so choose wisely. My favorite, by far is the NOLA Coffee Liqueur from St. George Spirits. It is not as well known as Kahlua and not a widely available, but it's definitely worth hunting down this bottle. The soda water is optional. The drink is not really fizzy. The soda water just gives the drink a little dilution, which will help if the flavors are too strong for you. The lemon twist is important. It transforms the drink and brightens it up in unexpected ways. The deep heavy flavors of Scotch and coffee get a livened up with the lemon oils. It's like adding a lemon twist to an Italian espresso. Try it both ways. I think you'll agree. Besides, this one is easy to drink so, I'm sure you'll figure out to do with the second cocktail. Homemade Coffee Liqueur - Kind of like Kahlua, but better. Le Gourmet TV 4K
When we started this process of figuring out how to make coffee liqueur at home, we found most of the recipes were too sweet, and lacked complexity of flavour. They all had only one note - and it was weak coffee flavoured vodka. It just didn't work for us. So we started with fresh dark roasted coffee beans that we gently smashed in a mortar and pestle. We then added ½ a vanilla bean, and bathed this in 151º over proof rum. You really want to layer flavour over flavour, and the higher alcohol helps dissolve more of the oils in the coffee - it also keeps the final product from being to cloyingly sweet when you dilute it later with simple syrup. Usually, I only use Kahlua in desserts and cakes because I find it too sweet for drinks and the coffee is not really to my taste. So I did a bit of research and combined my 2 favourite liquids (Coffee and Vodka) into this home-made recipe for Coffee Liqueur. INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Cold brew coffee -- combine 1/4 cup of espresso powder & 2 and 1/2 cups of water. Shake it up, then refrigerate for 12 hours.
2. Make simple syrup -- 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water. Boil until the sugar dissolves, stirring occasionally. (WATCH SIMPLE SYRUP VIDEO HERE -- http://youtu.be/Wf_9-IEhTL4) Allow simple syrup to cool before moving to next step.
3. Put it all together -- Add simple syrup to the coffee. Add 1 and 1/2 cups of rum. Add 1 vanilla bean (open it up before adding).
4. Let this sit for 3-4 days. OPTIONAL: Add glycerin to finish (this thickens the mixture). Stir and taste. Bottle your coffee liqueur (& add a bit of vanilla bean into each bottle).

How To Make Home Made Kahlúa STEP-BY-STEP RECIPE:
Ingredients:
1) 1.5 Cups Dark Rum
2) 750 ml Vodka
3) 12 oz Medium Roast Coffee
4) Zest of 1 Medium Orange
5) 1 Cinnamon Stick 6) 2 Whole Vanilla Beans
7) 1.5 Cups Turbinado Sugar
8) 1 Tsp. Dutch Milled Cocoa Powder
9) 1/3 to 1/2 Cup Simple Syrup (to taste)
Prep. & Storage:
Add all ingredients to a 1 gallon jug, seal the cap and allow the ingredients to sit for 3 - 4 weeks shaking the jug daily. Strain the contents of the jug into a fresh clean Bottle and enjoy. Store in a light protected area so a color change does not occur.
NOTE: Simple syrup can be added to your infusion if you want a sweeter product.

The other day I wanted to make a Black Russian for the Mrs. and that cocktail required Coffee Liquor (AKA Kahlúa). After making my bride her libation I found myself out of said spirit. So instead of gong out and buying another bottle, I decided use my bar tending skills to make my own. Its really simple to do, cheaper then buying it at the liquor store and the taste of the finished product is much better and way more intense. Anyway, enough prose. Enjoy the show!!! Step-by-step recipe follows:
How To Make Home Made Kahlúa STEP-BY-STEP RECIPE:
Ingredients:
1) 1.5 Cups Dark Rum
2) 750 ml Vodka
3) 12 oz Medium Roast Coffee
4) Zest of 1 Medium Orange
5) 1 Cinnamon Stick 6) 2 Whole Vanilla Beans
7) 1.5 Cups Turbinado Sugar
8) 1 Tsp. Dutch Milled Cocoa Powder
9) 1/3 to 1/2 Cup Simple Syrup (to taste)
Prep. & Storage:
Add all ingredients to a 1 gallon jug, seal the cap and allow the ingredients to sit for 3 - 4 weeks shaking the jug daily. Strain the contents of the jug into a fresh clean Bottle and enjoy. Store in a light protected area so a color change does not occur.
NOTE: Simple syrup can be added to your infusion if you want a sweeter product.

When we started this process of figuring out how to make coffee liqueur at home, we found most of the recipes were too sweet, and lacked complexity of flavour. They all had only one note - and it was weak coffee flavoured vodka. It just didn't work for us.
So we started with fresh dark roasted coffee beans that we gently smashed in a mortar and pestle. We then added ½ a vanilla bean, and bathed this in 151º over proof rum. You really want to layer flavour over flavour, and the higher alcohol helps dissolve more of the oils in the coffee - it also keeps the final product from being to cloyingly sweet when you dilute it later with simple syrup. Rounding out the complex flavour profile is a cinnamon stick, some orange peel, and crushed cocoa nibs. The Dude would be proud!
Ingredients:
2 cups 151º overproof rum (75.5% alc)
1 cup dark roast ground coffee (we just smash in a mortar and pestle)
1/2 vanilla bean
½ cinnamon stick
2- 3 cocoa nibs, optional
1 slice of orange peel, optional
simple syrup
Method:
Slice the vanilla bean it open lengthwise and then scrape out the inside of the bean. Place the bean, scrapings, course ground coffee and rum to a sealable Mason jar. Give it a shake and set it aside someplace dark. After 24 open the jar and toss in the cinnamon stick, cracked cocoa nibs, and orange peel. Give it a shake and set aside for another day.
Strain the mixture through a coffee filter, and mix in the simple syrup… Now this is another place where your personal taste will come into play. We like ours on the less sweet side so we start by mixing 1 part simple syrup to 3 parts coffee infusion; then we taste and start adjusting form there. Ideally you want to end up with about 40% alc by volume.

Usually, I only use Kahlua in desserts and cakes because I find it too sweet for drinks and the coffee is not really to my taste.
So I did a bit of research and combined my 2 favourite liquids (Coffee and Vodka) into this home-made recipe for Coffee Liqueur.
It still retains the sweetness and alcohol, but what I get now is the beautiful flavour and aroma of my own preferred coffee in my liqueur.

This simple Scotch cocktail is made with The Black Grouse (Peaty Blended Scotch Whisky), St. George NOLA Coffee Liqueur, Soda Water and a Lemon Twist. It is as easy to make as it is to drink. It's the improved, Whisky version of a Black Russian, which is a White Russian (https://youtu.be/FsBmI5v5xbs) without the cream.
The name of the drink is an allusion to the Scottish tartan. (The one the picture is close, but not the same.) It's probably just there to evoke some Scottish imagery and get you in the mood for a Scotch cocktail.
Like most Scotch cocktails, this one is usually made with a blended Scotch (a blend of single malts with grain alcohol added), but this one benefits from a Scotch with an emphasis on the smoky flavors. The Black Grouse is the best of both world's. It is smokier than your average blend. It's also pretty affordable.
The Coffee Liqueur you use will have a big impact on the drink, so choose wisely. My favorite, by far is the NOLA Coffee Liqueur from St. George Spirits. It is not as well known as Kahlua and not a widely available, but it's definitely worth hunting down this bottle.
The soda water is optional. The drink is not really fizzy. The soda water just gives the drink a little dilution, which will help if the flavors are too strong for you.
The lemon twist is important. It transforms the drink and brightens it up in unexpected ways. The deep heavy flavors of Scotch and coffee get a livened up with the lemon oils. It's like adding a lemon twist to an Italian espresso. Try it both ways. I think you'll agree. Besides, this one is easy to drink so, I'm sure you'll figure out to do with the second cocktail. Slàinte mhath!
