Editorial Reviews

Review

“A scouring investigation of the unorthodox methods of the anti-immigration Minuteman Project . . . . A sweeping account of some of [its] major players.”
Kirkus Reviews

“A taut true-crime story told with a measure of gravitas, gripping as much for the grisly particulars of a violent murder as for the fascinating context of the anti-immigrant movement playing out along the U.S.-Mexico border....As the national debate on immigration heats up again, this is a must-read for those who seek a deeper understanding of the issues and emotions behind the rhetoric.”
Seattle Times

“David Neiwert has not only earned his investigative chops over the past decade or so by exploring the dangerous side of right-wing extremism—he's proven himself to be one of the more lyrical and elegant writers on the beat. …Neiwert's insights after covering right-wing extremism movements, his gift with language, his considerable storytelling skills all combine to make And Hell Followed With Her a near compulsive—and frightening—read. His ability to combine the history of these various organizations with the more immediate crime, and his analysis of the mindset of those who spent their lives immersed in the delusions of the right wing, make this book an important one, one with implications that reach far beyond one woman, two deaths and one border town….a radically scary wake-up call of forewarning.”
Daily Kos

“The pace is gripping as well as informative in ways human and political…”
Oregonian

“A taut true-crime story told with a measure of gravitas, gripping as much for the grisly particulars of a violent murder as for the fascinating context of the anti-immigrant movement playing out along the U. S-Mexico border....As the national debate on immigration heats up again, this is a must-read for those who seek a deeper understanding of the issues and emotions behind the rhetoric.”
Seattle Times

"David Neiwert grabs readers and drags them from a dusty Arizona border town to Washington's Canadian border, all the while mapping the rise and fall of the Minutemen movement and its ill-fated volunteer border patrols. [it¹s] a book that only Neiwert could write. [he] doesn't rely on florid prose to evoke an emotional response; the plain facts are jarring enough."
The Stranger

"One of the best books you can read on one of the most crucial subjects you can study: how the toxic mindset of white supremacist, anti-government insurrectionist lunacy migrates again and again into the mainstream of American political discussion."
Rick Perlstein, The Nation

And Hell Followed With Her draws a direct line between the dangerous, dehumanizing Minuteman rhetoric, the broadcasting of it by cheerleading media, and the senseless murder of a father and his daughter. The case, as well as the economic slump, drew much of the air out of the Minuteman movement. May it never come back.”
Macleans

“An engrossing and chilling new book…Neiwert maintains suspense through the quality of his observations…. [and] cautions us that the impulse that gave rise to the Minuteman project—the hatred and bigotry of the extremist right—has not gone away.”
Tucson Weekly

I have found several glaring mistruths and outrageous lies in this account of Shawna Forde. No DNA was ever found tying Shawna to the crime scene. The lone living witness was unable to ID Shawna in a line up and her description of the female involved does not match Shawna. I find it very disappointing when authors rush in to tell these crime tales and profit off the deaths of crime victims while making up blatant lies and stirring up hatred for the convicted. They pretend to tell the real crime story as if they are "helping" readers understand the crime, when in fact they are leaching off murder victims and inventing a thrilling story to sell books. Disgusting! Not to mention there is compelling evidence to prove Shawna is not involved in the crime.

This account of the Minuteman border patrol movement of the mid 2000's is very well laid out and interesting. About half of the story focuses on Shawna Forde, whose faction gunned down a family living in a border community in AZ. While there's not much to redeem Shawna, it's pretty clear that the writer loses objectivity where she's concerned. He contradicts himself in a couple areas, such as her not being able to take the initial steps to achieve her grand plans - Really? Did she not inveigle her way into the PBS show he wrote about? How about the decent number of votes she got for the city council seat she ran for - and this after she fled the state! He insinuates her to be lazy, but I imagine all her networking and manipulating took a great deal of time and energy, misdirected as it was. It's true that the Flores murders did not get the media exposure they should have, and the writer explains the reality of modern media's role in deciding what gets air time and what doesn't. The aftermath of the Minuteman movement is also very interesting. This is definitely worth reading - just know that, like most accounts, there's an agenda.

This investigative story gave me deep insights into the Minuteman movement. I appreciated the scholarship and passion that the author clearly evidenced for unearthing, connecting, and presenting the facts. However, the narrative lost its way and me as a reader in the excessive backstory about Shawna Forde, a right wing radical who commits murder. Too bad for her victims that Shawna is given the major treatment here. By the time, the author meanders back to the crime at the heart of his story, he's run out of space and literary license to describe the victims in a meaningful way. The murder of an innocent schoolgirl nearly becomes a sidebar. The readers barely know her.

This nonfiction book is a good read about the rise of The Minute Men in response to America's sad and stupid immigration policy. There are plenty of ego maniacs, hustlers and psychotics to keep you entertained. The book opens and closes with a home invasion and murders committed by the craziest and most dangerous Minute Men with a long treatise in between on the rise and failings of the Minute Man movement from a reporter who had been studying right wing groups for decades. Those sympathetic to right wing causes will find fault, as some members of my book club did not think the author offered a fair and balanced portrayal of the events and the movement. I didn't find that the case. I think The Minute Men's actions speak loud and clear: a bunch of yahoos with guns looking for attention, which they often get by getting on the news and sometimes acting criminally. The news media - especially CNN & FOX - come off looking like morons. I think the book should have discussed in more detail the failings of the US immigration policy (jail CEO's for employing non-citizens) and the steps necessary to end illegal entry which now kills over 500 people a year in the deserts of the southwestern US.

This book is well written and well researched. It opens your eyes to the real thinking behind the small-minded Minutemen movement and how the right wing press and reporters were mislead by evil people, and how they reported lies and misled the world..

The ‘her’ in this case is Shawna Forde and the hell she wrought was self-evolved from a young age. From a troubled life as an infant that eventually lead to teenage prostitution and more than a dozen arrests Shawna grafted and drifted through life until she found a belief, a desire that she could control and make her own, the protection of the borders of the United States at all costs.
Her very beliefs led to the down-spiral that her life evolved into and finally spiraled out of control. Heiwart introduces her to us as she and her band of ne'er -do-wells commitment a home invasion in the tiny Arizona town of Arivaca, murdering in cold blood the man of the house, his nine year old daughter and severely wounding and wife and mother. With broad stokes of description we are given a story that is as intriguing as any suspense novel, tightly woven around the facts behind this true-crime drama.
We are introduced to the Minuteman Project and given a superbly well researched history of history of the modern-day phenomena that sprung to new life after that fatal day that planes crashed into New York’s twin towers. And we are given a background on one of America’s last stalwart Wild West towns, the dusty burb of Arivaca, just twelve miles from the Mexico where a life of smuggling over the border, whether it was drugs or humans, is given a blind-eye or at least disregarded by the locals as normal for the region.
When the two elements finally combined they caused a combustible nativist explosion that led to a showdown from a private militia with the drug runners of area and blew wide open the true nature of a bigoted, psychopath and her delusionary hold on the border watching movement.
