Omega-3 fatty acids — also called ω-3 fatty acids or n-3 fatty acids — are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) with a double bond (C=C) at the third carbon atom from the end of the carbon chain. The fatty acids have two ends, the carboxylic acid (-COOH) end, which is considered the beginning of the chain, thus "alpha", and the methyl (CH3) end, which is considered the "tail" of the chain, thus "omega". The way in which a fatty acid is named is determined by the location of the first double bond, counted from the methyl end, that is, the omega (ω-) or the n- end.
The three types of omega-3 fatty acids involved in human physiology are α-linolenic acid (ALA) (found in plant oils), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (both commonly found in marine oils). Marine algae and phytoplankton are primary sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Common sources of plant oils containing the omega-3 ALA fatty acid include walnut, edible seeds, clary sage seed oil, algal oil, flaxseed oil, Sacha Inchi oil, Echium oil, and hemp oil, while sources of animal omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acids include fish oils, egg oil, squid oils, and krill oil. Dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids does not appear to affect the risk of death, cancer or heart disease. Furthermore, fish oil supplement studies have failed to support claims of preventing heart attacks or strokes.
Omega (capital: Ω, lowercase: ω; Greek Ωμέγα) is the 24th and last letter of the Greek alphabet. In the Greek numeric system, it has a value of 800. The word literally means "great O" (ō mega, mega meaning 'great'), as opposed to omicron, which means "little O" (o mikron, micron meaning "little"). This name is Byzantine; in Classical Greek, the letter was called ō (ὦ), whereas the omicron was called ou (οὖ). The form of the uppercase letter derives from that of an omicron (Ο) broken up at the side (), with the edges subsequently turned outward (, , ). The modern lowercase shape goes back to the uncial form , a form that developed during the 3rd century BC in ancient handwriting on papyrus, from a flattened-out form of the letter () that had its edges curved even further upward.
In phonetic terms, the Ancient Greek Ω is a long open-mid o [ɔː], comparable to the vowel of British English raw. In Modern Greek, Ω represents [ɔ], the same sound as omicron. The letter omega is transcribed ō or simply o.
http://draxe.com/ In today’s video I want to talk to you about the benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial to your diet even though about 95% of Americans aren’t getting enough Omega-3s in their diet. There are two types of fats you want to keep balanced in your body, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Benefits of Omega-3s are reducing inflammation, reducing risk of heart disease, reducing risk of cancer, helping with athletic performance and recovery, weight loss, improving brain function, and more! Typically, too many people have more Omega-6 fatty acids in their body, causing inflammation. In an anti-inflammatory diet, you should be consuming a lot of Omega-3-rich foods like grass-fed beef and bison, free-range eggs, wild caught fish, chia and flax seeds, and a quality omeg...
May not be the most exciting video ever, but it had to be made. Now you know that yes, all the essential omega-3s are accessible on a vegan diet, and via what foods. And NO, you do not need to eat fish or fish oil to get your essential omegas in the form of DHA and EPA. You can eat what the fish eat! And take supplements that come from what the fish eat, instead of the organs of the fish! Pharmaceutical Grade Omega-3's Here: http://omega3formula.com As we continue with the part 3 of the supplements review we come to perhaps the most important of all...High Grade Omega-3s. I say the most important because omega-3's exert the most powerful antiinflammatory effects on the body that any over the counter supplement can offer. By controlling inflammation, you can literally put a stop to the progressive negative recovery that most athletes, bodybuilders and weight trainers find themselves in. The only problem is, your body cannot make the omega-3s. They HAVE to be gotten either through your diet or supplementation. What compounds this even more is the fact that due to the fact that most people don't eat enough fish to support their need (you'd have to eat up to 6 ounce...
We’ve all heard how important omega 3 fatty acids are for our health, a concern which is usually answered with fish oil supplements. So, what is a vegan or would-be vegan to do? In this interview with Michael Greger, M.D. of Nutritionfacts.org, we look into vegan omega sources and find out why you’ll want to use them even if you’re NOT vegan. In this video you'll find out how much omega 3 you need to take per day for best results. ►If you found this video helpful hit Subscribe to support the channel and share the video with your friends to spread the word◄ Disclaimer: Before taking any supplements please consult with your physician, this video just includes general recommendations. Key points: The nutrition label on your omega 3 fish oil supplement can be misleading if you're not sure what you're looking for. The two main compounds we're looking for are EPA and DHA. They stand for for eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. And the standard capsule of an Omega 3 supplement has only about 300 mg of these 2 combined. The effective dose for total EPA/DHA intake is 1.8-3.0 grams per day. That's between 6 to 10 of sta...
