The small island nation of Cyprus has been divided for almost forty years. A division which led to the Greek Cypriot south joining the EU as the Republic of Cyprus and prospering from this membership. Meanwhile, in the north, the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus remained isolated after a 2004 referendum on re-uniting the island was turned down by the south.
But today the banking crisis has left its impact in the south with businesses closing, banks calling in their loans and unemployment rising.
In an ironic twist of fate, the isolated north has been shielded from this crisis because of its very isolation but also because of Turkey which subsidises the northern Cypriot economy to the tune of three billion Turkish liras per year.
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus says it can help Cyprus out of its current crisis by working together on gas exploitation off the shores of Cyprus and transferring it through Turkey. Yet this would mean negotiating with Turkey which is still seen as the occupier by many in the south.
Euronews traveled to both northern and southern Cyprus to found out whether this crisis could become a catalyst in bringing the two sides back to the negotiating table to help solve one of Europe's oldest conflicts, the division of Cyprus.

North Nicosia or Northern Nicosia is the capital and largest city of the de facto state of Northern Cyprus. It is the northern part of the divided city of Nicosia and is governed by the Nicosia Turkish Municipality. "They are building on other people's misery", complains Greek Cypriot Rita Severis. "It's really disgraceful". It's claimed that 80% of the homes in Northern Cyprus belong to Greeks who fled when the island was partitioned. The Greek Cypriot government has declared that any foreigner found to own property in the Turkish north could be jailed for seven years. But that doesn't seem to be slowing the property boom. "I don't think the Greeks are going to come and take it away from us", states one tourist. She's more concerned about problems with Turkish builders.

Istiklâl Marsi (la Marcha de la Independencia) es el himno nacional de Turquía, adoptado oficialmente el 12 de marzo de 1921. Un total de 724 poemas fueron sometidos a una competición a escala nacional organizada para el hallazgo de la composición original más conveniente para esta marcha nacional.
Un poema de 10 versos escrito por el renombrado poeta Mehmet Akif Ersoy fue adoptado unánimemente por la Asamblea Nacional Magnífica Turca. Veinticuatro compositores participaron en otra competición dispuesta para la selección de una composición musical que satisfaría el himno nacional elegido lo mejor posible. El consejo, que podía solamente reunirse en 1924 debido a la guerra turca de la independencia, adoptó la música compuesta por Ali Rıfat Çağatay. Las palabras del himno nacional fueron cantadas a esta música hasta 1930. The İstiklâl marşı (English: Independence hymn) is the national anthem of Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, officially adopted on 12 March 1921 - two and a half years before the 29 October 1923 establishment of the Republic of Turkey, both as a motivational musical saga for the troops fighting in the Turkish War of Independence, and as an anthem for a Republic that was yet to be established.
Penned by Mehmet Âkif Ersoy, ultimately composed by Osman Zeki Üngör, the theme is one of affection for the Turkish homeland, freedom, and faith, of sacrifice for liberty, and of hope and devotion, explored through visual, tactile and kinesthetic imagery as they relate to the flag, the human spirit and the soil of the homeland.
The manuscript by Ersoy, between the title line İstiklal Marşı and the first text line, carries the dedication Kahraman Ordumuza -- "To our Heroic Army", the army that won the Independence War. The lyrics reflect on the sacrifice of the soldiers during the War.
The anthem was the subject of a brief copyright dispute in 2010, when GEMA, the German music copyright society, attempted to collect royalties on the anthem. The composition has also been adopted as the National Anthem of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Varosha is a ghost town just south of the Cypriot city of Famagusta. Prior to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, it was the modern tourist area of Famagusta. Its inhabitants fled during the invasion, and it has remained abandoned ever since. In the 1970s, Famagusta was the number one tourist destination in Cyprus. To cater to the increasing number of tourists, many new high-rise buildings and hotels were constructed. During its heyday, the Varosha quarter of Famagusta was not only the number one tourist destination in Cyprus, but between 1970 and 1974, it was one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and was a favourite destination of celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Raquel Welch, and Brigitte Bardot. You can see the now ruined area from the beach at Palm Beach Hotel, but be careful not to take photographs or get too close to the fenced area.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) (Turkish: Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti), commonly called Northern Cyprus, is a self-declared state that comprises the northeastern part of the island of Cyprus. Recognised only by Turkey, Northern Cyprus is considered by the international community to be occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus.
Northern Cyprus extends from the tip of the Karpass Peninsula in the north east, westward to Morphou Bay and Cape Kormakitis (the Kokkina/Erenköy exclave marks the westernmost extent of the area), and southward to the village of Louroujina/Akıncılar. A buffer zone under the control of the United Nations stretches between Northern Cyprus and the rest of the island and divides Nicosia, the island's largest city and capital of both states.
Tensions between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot populations in Cyprus culminated in 1974 with a coup d'état, an attempt to annex the island to Greece, and an invasion by Turkey in response. This resulted in the partitioning of the island, the resettlement of many of its inhabitants, and a unilateral declaration of independence by the north in 1983. Due to its lack of recognition, Northern Cyprus is heavily dependent on Turkey for economic, political and military support.

Recognised only by Turkey, Northern Cyprus is considered by the international community as part of the Republic of Cyprus. Northern Cyprus extends from the tip of the Karpass Peninsula in the north east, westward to Morphou Bay and Cape Kormakitis (the Kokkina/Erenköy exclave marks the westernmost extent of the area), and southward to the village of Louroujina. A buffer zone under the control of the United Nations stretches between Northern Cyprus and the rest of the island and divides Nicosia, the island's largest city and capital of both states. The 1974 coup d'état, an attempt to annex the island to Greece, was followed by the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. This resulted in the eviction of much of the north's Greek Cypriot population, the flight of Turkish Cypriots from the south, and the partitioning of the island, leading to a unilateral declaration of independence by the North in 1983. Due to its lack of recognition, Northern Cyprus is heavily dependent on Turkey for economic, political and military support. Attempts to reach a solution to the Cyprus dispute have been unsuccessful. Recognising the need for a resolution, in May 2008 the two sides began another round of negotiations after committing themselves to working towards "a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality, as defined by relevant Security Council resolutions." The Turkish Army maintains a large force in Northern Cyprus with its presence supported and approved by the TRNC government, which the Republic of Cyprus regards as an illegal occupation force, with its presence denounced in several United Nations Security Council resolutions. The conquest of 1571 of the island by the Ottoman Turks was a liberation for the bulk of the Greek Orthodox population. Indeed, in some areas, such as Lefkara, there had been local risings against the Venetians in support of the Ottoman forces. Serfdom was abolished and the peasant families were given the freehold of the land they had previously worked on. The Orthodox Church was also freed from centuries of control by the Latin hierarchy and its previous tradition of independence reasserted under a revived archbishopric. On the other hand, the Catholic Church of the Crusader and Venetian rulers were expelled. Its building were confiscated and converted into mosques, or were sold to the Orthodox Church. Catholics on the island were given the choice of conversion (either to Islam or Orthodoxy) or exile. Following the defeat of the Venetians in 1571 and before departing for Istanbul, Lala Mustafa Pasha, the Turkish Commander of the land forces in Cyprus, chose 12,000 foot soldiers to remain as the garrison of Famagusta, Nicosia and Kyrenia. In addition, he distributed 4,000 cavalry men across Limassol, Kyrenia, and elsewhere. The military forces were complemented by an additional 20,000 decommissioned infantry and 2,000 cavalry who remained as colonists. These formed the nucleus of the Cypriot community of Turkish origin, and by the firman of Sultan Selim II they were given fiefs to provide their homes and sustenance. Its inhabitants fled during the invasion, and it has remained abandoned ever since. In the 1970s, Famagusta was the number one tourist destination in Cyprus. It's claimed that 80% of the homes in Northern Cyprus belong to Greeks who fled when the island was partitioned. The Greek Cypriot government has declared that any foreigner found to own property in the Turkish north could be jailed for seven years. But that doesn't seem to be slowing the property boom. "I don't think the Greeks are going to come and take it away from us", states one tourist. She's more concerned about problems with Turkish builders.

Istiklâl Marsi (la Marcha de la Independencia) es el himno nacional de Turquía, adoptado oficialmente el 12 de marzo de 1921. Un total de 724 poemas fueron sometidos a una competición a escala nacional organizada para el hallazgo de la composición original más conveniente para esta marcha nacional.
Un poema de 10 versos escrito por el renombrado poeta Mehmet Akif Ersoy fue adoptado unánimemente por la Asamblea Nacional Magnífica Turca. Veinticuatro compositores participaron en otra competición dispuesta para la selección de una composición musical que satisfaría el himno nacional elegido lo mejor posible. El consejo, que podía solamente reunirse en 1924 debido a la guerra turca de la independencia, adoptó la música compuesta por Ali Rıfat Çağatay. Las palabras del himno nacional fueron cantadas a esta música hasta 1930. Después de eso, la música del himno nacional fue cambiada a un arreglo escrito por Osman Zeki Üngör, director de la orquesta sinfónica presidencial, y las letras se han cantado a este acompañamiento musical desde ahí en adelante. The İstiklâl marşı (English: Independence hymn) is the national anthem of Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, officially adopted on 12 March 1921 - two and a half years before the 29 October 1923 establishment of the Republic of Turkey, both as a motivational musical saga for the troops fighting in the Turkish War of Independence, and as an anthem for a Republic that was yet to be established.
Penned by Mehmet Âkif Ersoy, ultimately composed by Osman Zeki Üngör, the theme is one of affection for the Turkish homeland, freedom, and faith, of sacrifice for liberty, and of hope and devotion, explored through visual, tactile and kinesthetic imagery as they relate to the flag, the human spirit and the soil of the homeland.
The manuscript by Ersoy, between the title line İstiklal Marşı and the first text line, carries the dedication Kahraman Ordumuza -- "To our Heroic Army", the army that won the Independence War. The lyrics reflect on the sacrifice of the soldiers during the War.
The anthem was the subject of a brief copyright dispute in 2010, when GEMA, the German music copyright society, attempted to collect royalties on the anthem. The composition has also been adopted as the National Anthem of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Its inhabitants fled during the invasion, and it has remained abandoned ever since. In the 1970s, Famagusta was the number one tourist destination in Cyprus. To cater to the increasing number of tourists, many new high-rise buildings and hotels were constructed. During its heyday, the Varosha quarter of Famagusta was not only the number one tourist destination in Cyprus, but between 1970 and 1974, it was one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and was a favourite destination of celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Raquel Welch, and Brigitte Bardot. You can see the now ruined area from the beach at Palm Beach Hotel, but be careful not to take photographs or get too close to the fenced area.

Northern Cyprus (Turkish: Kuzey Kıbrıs), officially the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC; Turkish: Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti), is a self-declared state that comprises the northeastern portion of the island of Cyprus. Recognised only by Turkey, Northern Cyprus is considered by the international community as part of the Republic of Cyprus.
Northern Cyprus extends from the tip of the Karpass Peninsula in the north east, westward to Morphou Bay and Cape Kormakitis (the Kokkina/Erenköy exclave marks the westernmost extent of the area), and southward to the village of Louroujina. A buffer zone under the control of the United Nations stretches between Northern Cyprus and the rest of the island and divides Nicosia, the island's largest city and capital of both states.
The 1974 coup d'état, an attempt to annex the island to Greece, was followed by the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. This resulted in the eviction of much of the north's Greek Cypriot population, the flight of Turkish Cypriots from the south, and the partitioning of the island, leading to a unilateral declaration of independence by the North in 1983. Due to its lack of recognition, Northern Cyprus is heavily dependent on Turkey for economic, political and military support.
Attempts to reach a solution to the Cyprus dispute have been unsuccessful. Recognising the need for a resolution, in May 2008 the two sides began another round of negotiations after committing themselves to working towards "a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality, as defined by relevant Security Council resolutions." The Turkish Army maintains a large force in Northern Cyprus with its presence supported and approved by the TRNC government, which the Republic of Cyprus regards as an illegal occupation force, with its presence denounced in several United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The conquest of 1571 of the island by the Ottoman Turks was a liberation for the bulk of the Greek Orthodox population. Indeed, in some areas, such as Lefkara, there had been local risings against the Venetians in support of the Ottoman forces. Serfdom was abolished and the peasant families were given the freehold of the land they had previously worked on.
The Orthodox Church was also freed from centuries of control by the Latin hierarchy and its previous tradition of independence reasserted under a revived archbishopric. On the other hand, the Catholic Church of the Crusader and Venetian rulers were expelled. Its building were confiscated and converted into mosques, or were sold to the Orthodox Church. Catholics on the island were given the choice of conversion (either to Islam or Orthodoxy) or exile. Following the defeat of the Venetians in 1571 and before departing for Istanbul, Lala Mustafa Pasha, the Turkish Commander of the land forces in Cyprus, chose 12,000 foot soldiers to remain as the garrison of Famagusta, Nicosia and Kyrenia. In addition, he distributed 4,000 cavalry men across Limassol, Kyrenia, and elsewhere. The military forces were complemented by an additional 20,000 decommissioned infantry and 2,000 cavalry who remained as colonists.
These formed the nucleus of the Cypriot community of Turkish origin, and by the firman of Sultan Selim II they were given fiefs to provide their homes and sustenance. Steps were also taken to assist soldiers with dependants on the mainland to bring these to Cyprus.

This resulted in the eviction of much of the north's Greek Cypriot population, the flight of Turkish Cypriots from the south, and the partitioning of the island, leading to a unilateral declaration of independence by the North in 1983. Due to its lack of recognition, Northern Cyprus is heavily dependent on Turkey for economic, political and military support.
Attempts to reach a solution to the Cyprus dispute have been unsuccessful. Recognising the need for a resolution, in May 2008 the two sides began another round of negotiations after committing themselves to working towards "a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality, as defined by relevant Security Council resolutions." The Turkish Army maintains a large force in Northern Cyprus with its presence supported and approved by the TRNC government, which the Republic of Cyprus regards as an illegal occupation force, with its presence denounced in several United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The conquest of 1571 of the island by the Ottoman Turks was a liberation for the bulk of the Greek Orthodox population. Indeed, in some areas, such as Lefkara, there had been local risings against the Venetians in support of the Ottoman forces. Serfdom was abolished and the peasant families were given the freehold of the land they had previously worked on.
The Orthodox Church was also freed from centuries of control by the Latin hierarchy and its previous tradition of independence reasserted under a revived archbishopric. On the other hand, the Catholic Church of the Crusader and Venetian rulers were expelled. Its building were confiscated and converted into mosques, or were sold to the Orthodox Church. Catholics on the island were given the choice of conversion (either to Islam or Orthodoxy) or exile. Following the defeat of the Venetians in 1571 and before departing for Istanbul, Lala Mustafa Pasha, the Turkish Commander of the land forces in Cyprus, chose 12,000 foot soldiers to remain as the garrison of Famagusta, Nicosia and Kyrenia. In addition, he distributed 4,000 cavalry men across Limassol, Kyrenia, and elsewhere. The military forces were complemented by an additional 20,000 decommissioned infantry and 2,000 cavalry who remained as colonists.
These formed the nucleus of the Cypriot community of Turkish origin, and by the firman of Sultan Selim II they were given fiefs to provide their homes and sustenance. Steps were also taken to assist soldiers with dependants on the mainland to bring these to Cyprus.

"Cyprus Still Divided" finally reveals the web of domestic politics, the realpolitik of Henry Kissinger, and repeated refusal of successive U.S. presidents to demand that the rule of law and fundamental human rights be upheld in Cyprus. For example, the documentary presents a recently declassified 1974 State Department memorandum that clearly indicts Secretary of State Kissinger, who wrote, "There is no American reason why the Turks should not have one-third of Cyprus."
"Newly-released information about U.S. policy toward Cyprus, such as the declassified State Department memorandum written by Secretary Kissinger, sheds new light on the 36-year-old issue and the public must be made aware," said Executive Director Nick Larigakis. "The documentary accomplishes this task by presenting the facts in a clear and concise manner."
"Cyprus Still Divided" also looks to the future of the divided island in the context of the ongoing settlement negotiations between the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot community that began in September 2008. The documentary says: "By abandoning the rule of law and its principles, the United States had a role in causing the present division of Cyprus. It remains to be seen whether the U.S. can perform a role in reunifying Cyprus."

Kyrenia Castle, at the east end of the old harbour in Kyrenia is a 16th-century castle built by the Venetians over a previous Crusader fortification. The island of the goddess Aphrodite lies in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea. Its climate is extremely pleasant, its scenery diverse. Beautiful beaches, high mountains, idyllic villages, monasteries decorated with Byzantine murals, busy cities, colorful harbors. There's a good reason why Cyprus has become a favorite vacation spot for tourists. Larnaca has been the capital of the islands tourism and the gate to Cyprus for three main reasons. One of these is its favorable location. Tourists can easily reach the beaches of Napa, the capital Nicosia, the Troodos Mountain or Paphos from here. The second is its international airport, the significance of which has greatly increased since the division of the island.
This is where all the charter planes land while the harbor welcomes the ships arriving from Israel and Arabic countries. This is where the one to two day boat trips to Syria and Lebanon set off. There are no trains on the island as the only line was demolished in the 50s. However, the road system is of good quality and public transportation is highly developed. Tourists can also use share taxis or rent cars and motorcycles. Let's not forget that as a heritage of the British governance, cars drive on the left hand side of the road which makes life a little difficult at first but by the time it's time to go home, you'll have become accustomed to it. The city is made up of three distinct parts. The seashore with its modern buildings and beach promenades, the old town and the one time Turkish quarter. The promenade is the site of folklore and art performances.
The most beautiful and most important site of Larnaca is the St. Lazarus church. According to John's gospel, Christ resurrected Lazarus who later fled to Cyprus and was the bishop of Kition for 30 years. The church stands on his grave. Lazarus didn't find eternal peace in death as his earthly remains were first taken to Constantinople, now Istanbul and then to Marseilles. All that remains of the ancient city of Kition is a not too large excavation in the northern part of Larnaca. The grave of Lazarus can be seen in the crypt below the church. The sign on his empty sarcophagus reads, friend of Jesus. The church has a central knave, two isles and three domes. There's Byzantine and Latin marks and is still in use today. Grandiose weddings and christenings are held here. The churchyard was a favorite burial site for foreigners especially high ranking Englishmen. Some researchers say that the name Larnaca stems from the ancient Greek word sarcophagus and refers to the tomb of Lazarus.

In 1983, the Turkish-held area declared itself the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus". So far, only Turkey recognizes the TRNC, while all other governments and the United Nations recognize only the government of the Republic of Cyprus over the whole island. The UN operates a peacekeeping force and a narrow buffer zone between the two Cypriot ethnic groups. Kyrenia Castle, at the east end of the old harbour in Kyrenia is a 16th-century castle built by the Venetians over a previous Crusader fortification. Within its walls lies a twelfth-century chapel showing reused late Roman capitals, and the Shipwreck Museum. Research carried out at the site suggests that the Byzantines built the original castle in the 7th Century to guard the city against the new Arab maritime threat. The first historical reference to the castle occurs in 1191, when King Richard the Lionheart of England captured it on his way to the Third Crusade. After a short period, Richard sold the island to the Knights Templar, and then to his cousin Guy de Lusignan, the former king of Jerusalem. Initially the castle was quite small. John d'Ibelin enlarged it between 1208 and 1211. The Castle's main function was military and the improvements consisted of a new entrance, square and horseshoe-shaped towers, embrasures for archers, and dungeons.

1. The Cypriot dessert wine commandaria is recognized as the world's oldest named wine. Knight crusaders have named it in the 13th century, but it may have been made for 5,000 years. King Richard the Lionheart of England called it "the wine of kings and the king of wines" at his wedding.
2. In 2004, archaeologists found the remains of a person buried with a cat at a Neolithic archeological site in Cyprus. Dating back about 9,500 years, this is the oldest known pet cat, predating Egyptian civilization and pushing back the earliest known feline-human association significantly.
3. Since 1974 Northern Cyprus has been declared a separate state under Turkish control. The “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” is ruled by the Turks, but this title is only recognized by Turkey itself. Not only is the island of Cyprus largely divided so is the capital city of Nicosia, which lies separated by “The Green Line” akin to the manner in which Berlin was once divided into East and West Germany. It is now the only capital in the world to be divided between two ‘nations’.
4.Cyprus lies in the midst of several Middle Eastern nations—including Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. But its closest country in proximity is Turkey to the south. This unique location has set up the island of Cyprus as a neutral crossroads for many diplomatic proceedings throughout history.
5. Human presence is first recorded on the island in the 10th millennium BC. Groups of people from the Asian mainland visited the island for short periods of time in order to hunt the pygmy hippos.By the 9th millennium BC sedentary communities are settled in Cyprus.
6. Perfume originated from Cyprus. Aphrodite must have smelled pretty good if the 4000 year old traces of perfume found by archeologists in Pyrgos are anything to go by. The perfumes were discovered in alabaster bottles within an enormous underground cave. Archeologists believe they were produced on an industrial scale.
7. The pine forests of the Troodos and the Kyrenia mountains owe their existence to none other than Winston Churchill. As a junior minister in the early 1900's, he ordered a re-afforestation programme to replace the famous forests of centuries gone by, systematically eroded by centuries of felling to build ships and provide fuel for smelting.The island's forests now provide a tranquil haven from the searing heat of summer.
