In which John Green teaches you about the fall of the Roman Empire, which happened considerably later than you may have been told. While the Western Roman Empire fell to barbarians in 476 CE, the Byzantines in Constantinople continued the Eastern Empire nicely, calling themselves Romans for a further 1000 years. Find out what Justinian and the rest of the Byzantine emperors were up to over there, and how the Roman Empire dragged out its famous Decline well into medieval times. In addition to all this, you'll learn about ancient sports riots and hipster barbarians, too.

Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire - Episode 3: Julius Caesar (Documentary)
The Roman Empire was the largest and most powerful in history, but how did ancient Rome achieve its greatness? And why did it eventually collapse? In this epic series, we explore these questions, following the most dramatic Roman characters as they lead an empire slowly sliding to its own destruction and the Barbarian leaders who brought about that destruction. We vividly recreate the living environment of the time: teeming Roman streets, struggling armies, gladiators, Roman excesses and debauchery, the camps and villages of the barbarians, and the deeply human struggle of outsiders to conquer and Romans to survive.
Episode 3: Julius Caesar
It is 60 BC. Over-powerful generals and money corrupts the Roman Republic. The empire churns with civil war, and violence and murder run rampant in the streets.
Julius Caesar, desperate for fame and honor, embarks on a brutal decade long campaign to annex Gaul and build his own reputation. His aristocratic rivals try to stop him, but he is an expert manipulator. His propaganda and extravagant victories against bloodthirsty barbarians thrill the public.
In 49 BC, he crosses the Rubicon intending to claim his rightful place as the chief man of Rome. It sparks a new civil war that pits him against Pompey the Great and sounds the final death knell for the Republic.

German chieftain Ballomar 180 AD... Gaius Julius Sohaemus, also known as Sohaemus of Armenia and Sohaemo (Armenian: Սոհեմոս, Greek: Γάϊος Ἰούλιος Σόαιμος, Sohaemus is Arabic for little dagger, flourished 2nd century) was an Emesene Prince and Aristocrat from Syria who served as a Roman Client King of Armenia.
Sohaemus was a prominent person in the Roman Empire in the 2nd century from the Syrian Roman Client Emesene Dynasty. He was a monarch of Assyrian, Greek, Armenian, Medes, Berber and Roman ancestry. The novelist of the 2nd century, his contemporary Iamblichus claims Sohaemus has his fellow-countryman. Iamblichus calls Sohaemus as an Arsacid and Achaemenid, in his lineage and was a descendant of the Median Princess Iotapa, who was once betrothed to the Ptolemaic Prince Alexander Helios. Little is known on Sohaemus’ family and early life prior to becoming King of Armenia. Before becoming King, Sohaemus had been a Roman Senator and served as a Consul in Rome at an unknown date.
In the year 144, Sohaemus succeeded Vologases I as King of Armenia. The circumstances leading to his appointment to the Armenian throne is unknown. Sohaemus was a contemporary to the rule of the Roman emperors: Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus and Commodus of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. In the first reign, he ruled from the years from 144 until 161. Not much is known of about his first reign. The novelist Iamblichus living in Armenia at the time of his rule describes his reign as ‘in succession to his ancestors’. This statement can also refer to his former ancestor Sohaemus of Emesa who lived in the 1st century.
In 161 Vologases IV of Parthia, son of the legitimate King Mithridates IV of Parthia, dispatched his troops to seize Armenia and eradicated the Roman legions stationed in the country under the legatus Gaius Severianus. Encouraged by the Spahbod Osroes, Parthian troops marched further West into Roman Syria. After Armenia was seized by the Parthians, Sohaemus became a former ruling monarch living in political exile, possibly living in Rome. Sohaemus was well known in Rome and there were rumors in some quarters that he was not the right man in the right place.
On Roman terms, Parthia had made peace with Rome, Sohaemus was installed as King of Armenia by Lucius Verus in either 163 or 164. The ceremony for Sohaemus in becoming Armenian King for the second time, may have took place in Antioch or Ephesus. In 164, Latin coinage were struck in Armenia with the inscription L. Verus. Aug. Armeniacus and on the reverse Rex Armen(ii)s datus. The time of his second reign is unknown. Sohaemus reigned from 163 perhaps up to 186. Sometime during his reign, Sohaemus was expelled by elements favorable to Parthia. Sohaemus was expelled because a man called Tiridates stirred up trouble in Armenia who had murdered the King of the Osroenes and had thrust his sword in the face of Publius Martius Verus, the Roman Governor of Cappadocia when he rebuked for it. Tiridates only punishment for his crimes was to be exiled to Roman Britain, by Marcus Aurelius.
As a result of Sohaemus’ second expulsion from Armenia; Roman forces went to war with Parthian soldiers. Parthia retook most of their lost territory in 166, as Sohaemus from his expulsion retreated to Syria. After Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus and the Parthian rulers intervened in the conflict, the son of Vologases IV of Parthia, Vologases II assumed the Armenian throne in 186.
It has been suggested that the Garni Temple in Armenia, may have been the tomb probably belonging to Sohaemus, based on the construction date as the temple was probably built in 175. The Emesene prince, Julius Alexander may have been the possible son of Sohaemus. Sohaemus is played by Omar Sharif in the 1964 film The Fall of the Roman Empire

This video is about the historiography of fall of the Roman Empire or Fall of Rome.
By 476 AD the western half of the Roman Empire had collapsed. The Crisis of the Third Century was that the entire Roman system -- social, military, economic --collapsed and the empire began disintegrating. This happened due to a number of different reasons:
Unrest among common people: Roman society was divided into free persons and slaves. The slaves had no rights and had to work very hard for their masters. This caused unrest among them.
Taxes: As the empire expanded, more and more people had to be conscripted into the army. This required money for salaries so people from all the Roman territories were heavily taxed. This caused heavy unrest and revolt from some parts of the empire who felt disconnected from the Emperor.
Barbarians: The Romans called everyone outside the Roman Empire barbarians and thought they lacked culture and morals. However, they had to sometimes enlist their help in protecting their far-off territories where the tired Roman army could not or would not go. The Barbarians (Germanic tribes such as the Vandals and the Visigoths) not only took over the land they were sent to protect but also weakened the social morals of the troops.
Christianity: the rise of Christianity made people believe that a peaceful life of service was possible and they did not want the join the army. It also taught that all men were created equal in the eyes of God which threw off the balance of slaves and free persons.
Praetorian Guards: the Praetorian guards were a special class of soldiers encamped within Rome charged with protecting high-ranking officials in the city. They misused their special powers by accepting money to assassinate emperors, bullied people under them and on the people whom they were sworn to protect. Their position in society was weakened because of this.
Asterix and Obelix is a famous comic book that is based on the rebellion of territories within the Roman Empire. Try and find one of the Asterix and Obelix comic books and learn about the Gaulish rebellion.

This ancient Rome documentary, an ancient war documentary, is about the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire and covers how Gaius Marius, a Roman general who had no connection with aristocracy won the barbarian tribes.
Ancient Rome from a small republic, it grows into one of the greatest empires ever known lasting for over six hundred years. As its height it stretches from London to Baghdad, projecting its power with the first professional army and creating the model of the Western Civilization. And yet when the Empire begins to falter, it collapses with shocking speed as it takes only a hundred years for the imperial edifices of Rome to vanish like smoke. Swept away by the barbarian invasions. How did this happen?
This ancient history documentary about the ancient Rome Empire is part of a thirteen hour series which focuses on the Germanic, Britannic and other barbarian tribal wars with Rome. These ancient wars and brutal ancient battles finally led to the decline and fall of the Roman Empire.
This ancient history documentary film focuses on the ancient war campaigns and ancient battles with the barbarian tribes and extensive examinations of the reigns of little known Roman emperors and generals. The significance and structures of key barbarian tribes and the roles their leaders played are explored in detail. Territorial changes to the Roman Empire caused by unrelenting wars, plagues, mass starvation's and power struggles are presented in chronological historical context with extensive re-enactments.
This history documentary finally examines how the continuous ancient wars and ancient battles with the barbarians and depletion of resources became a core cause of the Roman Empire's decline and eventual collapse.
This ancient Rome documentary has been created under the Creative Commons Editor. All rights belong to their retrospective owners.
This ancient history documentary about Rome covers the First Barbarian War.
By 113 BC, Rome has become master of the entire Mediterranean basin. Aristocracy’s failure to deal with the Barbarians has led Gaius Marius, a Roman general with humble background, to defeat the invading Germanic Barbarian tribes, for which he was called "the third founder of Rome. Gaius Marius was noted for his important reforms of Roman armies, authorizing recruitment of landless citizens, eliminating the manipular military formations, and reorganizing the structure of the legions into separate cohorts. His life and career were significant in Rome's transformation from Republic to Empire.
This ancient history documentary, Rome- Rise and Fall of and Empire, uses Plutarch as a source.

The system had worked well for three centuries. However, a barbarian horde known as the Cimbri smashed through the northern imperial border. One humiliating defeat followed another, with losses of thousands of Roman legionaries. Terror gripped Rome and drove her into the arms of General Marius. Despite the fact that he was a commoner, he had a brilliant military mind.
To defeat the Cimbri, Marius transformed the Roman army and shook the Republic's political foundations to their core. It was a turning point for the Republic. Faced with the savage Cimbri, Rome was forced to decide between dictatorship and annihilation.

There’s always so much going on at a Chanel show that it’s ever more difficult to keep your head together enough to know what to describe first. In the case of the latest Chanel Métiers d’Art extravaganza, which just played out in Rome, perhaps one should start with Karl Lagerfeld’s relationship with the city, which dates as far back as 1963 and his debut season designing for Tiziani. Or maybe we should begin with the little-known fact that Coco Chanel designed for the incredible, classy ’50s actresses Jeanne Moreau, Anouk Aimée, Monica Vitti, and Romy Schneider, all of whom starred in Italian movies by Visconti and Pasolini wearing her clothes. These threads, elusively woven together like the silvery strands glinting in the tweeds and embroideries today, were the connecting idea behind the whole collection. But then the whole thing was built up, as only Chanel can manage, into a mega-faceted Sensurround event about movies and moviemaking and sets and Paris and Rome, all of it constructed for one night in Cinecittà, Italy’s “Hollywood on the Tiber.”
But really, despite all these excitements—a whole black-and-white reconstruction of Paris! A chance to roam the torch-lit avenues and temples where the TV series Rome was shot! An open-air premiere of a film by Lagerfeld!—we should be speaking plainly about the clothes. They were some of the best—cool and sexy, with a bit of the pleasingly sleazy in places—that Lagerfeld has done in a long time. It is in Lagerfeld’s nature to bat away too much talk of themes: Every time he builds an edifice, he’ll only ever shrug off its importance in interviews. This collection might have been the result of putting Italian Neorealismo and French film noir into the cocktail shaker, but he insisted that what came out “never looked like this in the past! It is just an idea, a dream, of Paris. We need to keep dreaming, because the reality in Paris is bleak. And that is not funny.”
With their long hair teased into messy demi-beehives by Sam McKnight, the girls slouched one by one out of a fake Paris Metro station, some of them wearing long jackets shrugged over long, lace-covered legs, others in black ciré pencil skirts and patent raincoats, one in a quilted leather suit. It’s a Parisian art to suggest eroticism rather than blatantly strut it, but close up, the kink was definitely there in the metal rings planted center-front on belts and on a choker or two. (After all, this was a show taking place on Federico Fellini’s movie stage, Teatro 5.) As the show went along, so the embellishments came in, since the Métiers d’Art collection is the showcase for the intricate handwork of Chanel’s specialist craft suppliers. There were metallic embroideries and pleating on caped shapes, delicate faggoting techniques on slip dresses, and, at one point, an ovoid, coral pink–petaled dress that seemed to nod in the direction of the couturiers of Rome—Capucci, perhaps. Considering that all the people who put their expert hands to this collection must have finished it in the terrible aftermath of the attacks on Paris, its quality as well as its beauty reads as testament to what the French are so good at.
