Uluwatu Temple is a Hindu temple set on the cliff bank in south part of Bali Peninsula. It is one of Sad Kahyangan Temple in Bali (six big groups of Bali Temples), located in Pecatu Village, Sub district of South Kuta, and Badung Regency or about 25 Km southerly part of Denpasar town. It is situated on the coral reef sordid to sea about 80 meters above the sea level. It is featured by a small dry forest which is mostly called by Alas Kekeran (interdict forest) which is belong to the temple and dwelt by a lot of monkeys and other animal. Name of Uluwatu was come from the word Ulu meaning the head and Watu meaning stone. Therefore Uluwatu Temple mean the temple built in tip of coral reef.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is a Balinese sea temple in Bali. Built in the 11th century, it is one of nine directional temples meant to protect Bali from evil spirits. It is located in Pecatu village, Kuta South District of Badung Regency of Bali.
Uluwatu Temple was built on the tip of the peninsula on the edge of a high rock which is continuously
washed by waves. The goddess Dewi Danu is respected as the protector of the sea. According to
legend, the rock on which the sanctuary stands today used to be her ship but it turned into stone. The
goddess marooned on the rock became the protector of the island. The group of buildings made of
white limestone was built in her honor and from their esplanades, opens a grand view of the
tempestuous sea 100 meters below.
Like in many other gardens of temples, frisky monkeys live and make it a sport to steal the hats and
glasses of tourists and parade around in them. Halfway between Uluwatu and Nusa Dua, the church of
the four religions can be found. In Bali, there's a large Chinese population and the number of people
immigrating from nearby islands, Java, Sumatra and Borneo is also high. In the last decades, more and
more Australians, Americans and Europeans have settled on the island of peace escaping from the
harms of civilization. The descendants of Christian Dutch colonists can still be found on the island
though it's understandable why there's a need for such ecumenical places of worship like the Church of
the Four Religions where Catholic, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu people have an equal chance to pray.
It's also very interesting from the aspect of architecture how the various motifs are used in one complex.
It's likely that there's no other place like this in the whole world.

The temple is inhabited by large number of monkeys, who are extremely adept at snatching visitors' belonging, including bags, cameras and eyeglasses. Keep a very close grip on all your belongings and stow away your eyeglasses if at all possible. If you do have something taken, the monkeys can usually be induced to exchange it for some fruit. Needless to say, rewarding the monkeys like this only encourages them to steal more. Locals and even the temple priest or monkey ranger will be happy to do the job for you, for NO tip required. The cliff is fascinating but the temple itself is not as impressive as others in Bali. Uluwatu Temple (Pura Uluwatu) is one of Bali's nine key directional temples. Though a small temple was claimed to have existed beforehand, the structure was significantly expanded by a Javanese sage, Empu Kuturan in the 11th Century. Another sage from East Java, Dang Hyang Nirartha is credited for constructing the padmasana shrines and is claimed to have attained Moksha here. Even more remarkable than the temple itself is its location, perched on a steep cliff 70 metres above the roaring Indian ocean waves. There are more steep headlands on either side and sunsets over Uluwatu are a sight to behold. The entrance fee from is Rp 30,000 and you need to be properly dressed to enter. Sarongs and sashes are available free at the entrance. Guides, once famously mercenary, hassle visitors less than they used to, although they will offer to "protect" you from the monkeys, for a tip of course. Note that while you are free to walk around the temple grounds, the central courtyards can only be entered during special rituals.
Kecak Fire Dance (Uluwatu Temple), Uluwatu Temple Area, 17.00 Pm. Balinese Kecak Dance is a spectacular traditional dance with the group of people playing this dance with fire game. It is very exciting and unique dance due to the sound of gamelan is not using the normal gamelan but use their mouth. The dancers make the compact choir with the exquisite dance movement that is one of this dance features. The story is usually used for this dance is taken from the Ramayana Epoch. IDR 100.000.

Yay! I did a Vlog. I'm actually really bad at vlogging you know... I'm used to just jabbering on about something I'm doing with my hair, but I went on this FABULOUS day trip to the Uluwatu Temple in Bali and Padang Padang beach and it was seriously so beautiful!! Bali is one of my all time favourite places to go on holiday.
This time around was my 7th return and I still am not over it lol. I hope you like this vlog video. Sorry it's not about hair but I really wanted to post this.

“Chark-a, chark-a, chark-a, chark-a”, and on… the chant goes. Almost hypnotic, trance-like, the thirty or so barechested Indonesian men sway with the rhythm. They’re sitting on the ground in a circle – and in the middle the drama is unfolding. Two young princes; a demon king; a damsel in distress; a mischievous monkey. They all play their parts in the ring of unceasing cantillation. The nightly performance is very popular here at Uluwatu. Buses bring the tourists from the resorts of Bali down to the southern tip of the island in time for sunset, when the show begins. Through the paths of the temple and past the clifftops with their views across the ocean, everyone walks, until you finally get to the stage.The performance is called a ‘Kecak dance’, an onomatopoeic title for the sound of the chant. It’s based on a traditional Balinese ritual but was actually created by a German man in the 1930s and based on the famous epic Hindu story of the Ramayana.It’s complicated plot, with enough twists and turns to be worthy of a television series. But in essence it is the story of a woman who is stolen from her husband (a prince) by a demon. The narrative follows the challenges and tasks the young prince and his brother must overcome to rescue her. As the sun sets during the performance, and the sky darkens, the story builds to a climax – a moment when a monkey king sets fire to a castle. With the orange flames and embers in the middle of the stage, it’s a dramatic moment.Here, in these photos, you can get a sense of the performance (just imagine the chanting sound in your head as you look at them). You’ll notice how the light changes through the hour. Enjoy.

Uluwatu Temple is a Hindu temple set on the cliff bank in south part of Bali Peninsula. It is one of Sad Kahyangan Temple in Bali (six big groups of Bali Temples), located in Pecatu Village, Sub district of South Kuta, and Badung Regency or about 25 Km southerly part of Denpasar town. It is situated on the coral reef sordid to sea about 80 meters above the sea level. It is featured by a small dry forest which is mostly called by Alas Kekeran (interdict forest) which is belong to the temple and dwelt by a lot of monkeys and other animal. Name of Uluwatu was come from the word Ulu meaning the head and Watu meaning stone. Therefore Uluwatu Temple mean the temple built in tip of coral reef.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is a Balinese sea temple in Bali. Built in the 11th century, it is one of nine directional temples meant to protect Bali from evil spirits. It is located in Pecatu village, Kuta South District of Badung Regency of Bali.
Uluwatu Temple was built on the tip of the peninsula on the edge of a high rock which is continuously
washed by waves. The goddess Dewi Danu is respected as the protector of the sea. According to
legend, the rock on which the sanctuary stands today used to be her ship but it turned into stone. The
goddess marooned on the rock became the protector of the island. The group of buildings made of
white limestone was built in her honor and from their esplanades, opens a grand view of the
tempestuous sea 100 meters below.
Like in many other gardens of temples, frisky monkeys live and make it a sport to steal the hats and
glasses of tourists and parade around in them. Halfway between Uluwatu and Nusa Dua, the church of
the four religions can be found. In Bali, there's a large Chinese population and the number of people
immigrating from nearby islands, Java, Sumatra and Borneo is also high. In the last decades, more and
more Australians, Americans and Europeans have settled on the island of peace escaping from the
harms of civilization. The descendants of Christian Dutch colonists can still be found on the island
though it's understandable why there's a need for such ecumenical places of worship like the Church of
the Four Religions where Catholic, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu people have an equal chance to pray.
It's also very interesting from the aspect of architecture how the various motifs are used in one complex.
It's likely that there's no other place like this in the whole world.

The temple is inhabited by large number of monkeys, who are extremely adept at snatching visitors' belonging, including bags, cameras and eyeglasses. Keep a very close grip on all your belongings and stow away your eyeglasses if at all possible. If you do have something taken, the monkeys can usually be induced to exchange it for some fruit. Needless to say, rewarding the monkeys like this only encourages them to steal more. Locals and even the temple priest or monkey ranger will be happy to do the job for you, for NO tip required. The cliff is fascinating but the temple itself is not as impressive as others in Bali. Uluwatu Temple (Pura Uluwatu) is one of Bali's nine key directional temples. Though a small temple was claimed to have existed beforehand, the structure was significantly expanded by a Javanese sage, Empu Kuturan in the 11th Century. Another sage from East Java, Dang Hyang Nirartha is credited for constructing the padmasana shrines and is claimed to have attained Moksha here. Even more remarkable than the temple itself is its location, perched on a steep cliff 70 metres above the roaring Indian ocean waves. There are more steep headlands on either side and sunsets over Uluwatu are a sight to behold. The entrance fee from is Rp 30,000 and you need to be properly dressed to enter. Sarongs and sashes are available free at the entrance. Guides, once famously mercenary, hassle visitors less than they used to, although they will offer to "protect" you from the monkeys, for a tip of course. Note that while you are free to walk around the temple grounds, the central courtyards can only be entered during special rituals.
Kecak Fire Dance (Uluwatu Temple), Uluwatu Temple Area, 17.00 Pm. Balinese Kecak Dance is a spectacular traditional dance with the group of people playing this dance with fire game. It is very exciting and unique dance due to the sound of gamelan is not using the normal gamelan but use their mouth. The dancers make the compact choir with the exquisite dance movement that is one of this dance features. The story is usually used for this dance is taken from the Ramayana Epoch. IDR 100.000.

“Chark-a, chark-a, chark-a, chark-a”, and on… the chant goes. Almost hypnotic, trance-like, the thirty or so barechested Indonesian men sway with the rhythm. They’re sitting on the ground in a circle – and in the middle the drama is unfolding. Two young princes; a demon king; a damsel in distress; a mischievous monkey. They all play their parts in the ring of unceasing cantillation. The nightly performance is very popular here at Uluwatu. Buses bring the tourists from the resorts of Bali down to the southern tip of the island in time for sunset, when the show begins. Through the paths of the temple and past the clifftops with their views across the ocean, everyone walks, until you finally get to the stage.The performance is called a ‘Kecak dance’, an onomatopoeic title for the sound of the chant. It’s based on a traditional Balinese ritual but was actually created by a German man in the 1930s and based on the famous epic Hindu story of the Ramayana.It’s complicated plot, with enough twists and turns to be worthy of a television series. But in essence it is the story of a woman who is stolen from her husband (a prince) by a demon. The narrative follows the challenges and tasks the young prince and his brother must overcome to rescue her. As the sun sets during the performance, and the sky darkens, the story builds to a climax – a moment when a monkey king sets fire to a castle. With the orange flames and embers in the middle of the stage, it’s a dramatic moment.Here, in these photos, you can get a sense of the performance (just imagine the chanting sound in your head as you look at them). The Uluwatu sunset cruise departs at 4pm from Kelan beach, northernmost part of Jimbaran Bay and goes along the picturesque West coast of the Bukit peninsula, passes by world famous surf beaches and arrives near Uluwatu around sunset. You can dip into the ocean along the way and sip cold beers (price is IDR 30,000, let us know how many will you need - the proceeds go to green-books.org, an environmental non-profit). You will be back on land in Kelan around 7.30pm. And we suggest you to try the famous Jimbaran grilled fish for dinner:)
Max number of passengers is 6 or 12 passenger, so bring you friends along.
