Merv Griffin
Mervyn Edward "Merv" Griffin, Jr. (July 6, 1925 – August 12, 2007) was a U.S. television host, musician, singer, actor, and media mogul. He began his career as a radio and big band singer who went on to appear in film and on Broadway. From 1965 to 1986 Griffin hosted his own talk show, The Merv Griffin Show, produced by Westinghouse Broadcasting (also known as Group W). He also created the game shows Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune, Click, Ruckus, and Merv Griffin's Crosswords with his own television production companies, Merv Griffin Enterprises and Merv Griffin Entertainment. During his lifetime, Griffin was considered an entertainment business magnate.
Early life
Griffin was born into a Irish American family on July 6, 1925, in San Mateo, California to Mervyn Edward Griffin, Sr., a stock-broker, and Rita Elizabeth Griffin (née Robinson), a homemaker. Raised as a Roman Catholic, Griffin started singing in his church choir as a boy, and by his teens was earning extra money as a church organist. His abilities as a pianist played a part in his early entry into show business.

David and the Giants
David and the Giants began as a rock band in Laurel, Mississippi; with the Huff brothers: David, Clay, and Ray—with Jerry Parker on drums, touring the Southeast during the 1960s. In 1977 they switched to a Christian rock format. They continued to sing and record together through 1999. Recording and performing together for almost 40 years, the band released 17 albums. Though the band's style has been compared to that of Mylon LeFevre and Broken Heart, their most commercially successful work came in the 1960s with a sound, augmented by The Muscle Shoals Horns, that closely resembled that of Jay & the Techniques.
Musical career
Beginning
The band released its first single, a cover version of "Rockin' Robin" around 1964, under the name of Little David & the Giants. In 1969, Keith Thibodeaux (best known as "Little Ricky" from I Love Lucy) joined the band. His arrival marked the beginning of the band's most commercially successful era. Although band members often described their sound as having its roots in Southern rock, the band's most successful recordings became popular in England in the 1970s and 80s as Northern soul – songs that featured a mixture of a Top 40 sound with horns and strings.

Riders in the Sky (band)
Riders in the Sky is an American Western music and comedy group which began performing in 1977. Their style also appeals to children, and they are sometimes considered a children's band. They have won two Grammy Awards and have written and performed music for major motion pictures, including "Woody's Roundup" from Toy Story 2 and Pixar's short film, For the Birds.
Riders Radio Theater is the Riders in the Sky's radio show. It originated in Nashville, with WPLN-FM as the presenting station, but later moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and can now be heard on WMKV.
History
For much of their career, the group was a trio: lead singer/guitarist Ranger Doug (Douglas B. Green), singer/fiddler Woody Paul (Paul Chrisman), and singer/bassist Too Slim (Fred LaBour). In the 1990s, the group re-added Joey the Cowpolka King (Joey Miskulin) on accordion, who had been with the group for a brief period in the 1980s. They usually introduce themselves as "Ranger Doug, The Idol of American Youth", "Woody Paul, the King of the Cowboy Fiddlers", "Too Slim, the Man of a Thousand Hats" and "Joey, the Cowpolka King".

Merv
Merv (Turkmen: Merw, Persian: مرو, Marv), formerly Achaemenid Satrapy of Margiana, and later Alexandria (Ἀλεξάνδρεια) and Antiochia in Margiana (Greek: Ἀντιόχεια τῆς Μαργιανῆς), was a major oasis-city in Central Asia, on the historical Silk Road, located near today's Mary in Turkmenistan.
Several cities have existed on this site, which is significant for the interchange of culture and politics at a site of major strategic value. It is claimed that Merv was briefly the largest city in the world in the 12th century. The site of ancient Merv has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. (See List of World Heritage Sites in Turkmenistan)
History
Merv's origins are prehistoric: archaeological surveys have revealed many traces of village life as far back as the 3rd millennium BC and that the city was culturally part of the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex. Under the name of Mouru, Merv is mentioned with Balkh in the geography of the Zend-Avesta (commentaries on the Avesta). Mouru was among the sixteen perfect lands created by Ahura Mazda.

Merv (East Syrian Ecclesiastical Province)
Merv was a metropolitan province of the Church of the East between the fifth and eleventh centuries, with several known suffragan dioceses.
Background
At least one East Syrian diocese in Khorasan existed by the beginning of the fifth century, though it was not assigned to a metropolitan province in 410. After establishing five metropolitan provinces in Mesopotamia, Canon XXI of the synod of Isaac provided that 'the bishops of the more remote dioceses of Fars, of the Islands, of Beth Madaye, of Beth Raziqaye and of the country of Abrashahr must accept the definition established in this council at a later date'. By implication, Abrashahr (Nishapur) already had a bishop at this period.
Four East Syrian dioceses in Khorasan and Segestan are attested a few years later. The bishops Bar Shaba of Merv, David of Abrashahr, Yazdoï of Herat and Aphrid of Segestan were present at the synod of Dadishoʿ in 424. The uncommon name of the bishop of Merv, Bar Shaba, means 'son of the deportation', suggesting that Merv's Christian community may have been deported from Roman territory.

The late-great Merv Griffin was a man who wore many hats. He was a successful businessman, talk show host, entertainer, singer, and game show creator. He was also gay during a time period in American history when it was a lot more difficult for LGBTQIA+ celebrities to be out and open about their sexuality.
Perhaps this is why Griffin, who died of prostate cancer at 82 in 2007, remained in the closet throughout his life. Maybe he figured that it was better to remain the object of gossip instead of openly living as a homosexual. At least that way, he wouldn't alienate many of his fans and be treated as a second-class citizen. The very fact that he couldn't live freely as the person he truly was, however, is nothing short of heartbreaking.
A man of Merv's talent and fame, with his gregarious demeanor and social dexterity, shouldn't have to have felt compelled to live such a double life while the LGBTQIA communities clout and it's levels of social acceptance rose steadily out of the ashes of bigotry.
That's not to say that Griffin had some kind of obligation or responsibility to come out. That decision was entirely up to him. But what we are saying is that he deserved better. It's not easy to take such a massive secret to the grave. It's also equally challenging to spend your entire life and career in perpetual stealth mode. Merv Griffin was born in California in the 1920s, and though he didn’t come from a show business family, he knew from a young age that entertainment was part of his destiny. He grew up playing the piano and singing in his church’s choir. He started his professional entertainment career as a piano player and singer before graduating to become a film actor.
However, he didn’t last too long in the film industry as he didn’t enjoy his experiences working in cinema. But this didn’t make him shy away from the entertainment industry nor did it deter him from being in front of the camera.
The television industry in the United States was booming and Merv Griffin wanted to be a part of it. It wasn’t long until he became the host of his own talk show, The Merv Griffin Show, which made him a household name. Of course, Merv Griffin is also known as the creator of many great TV shows, including Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune. The young boy who sang in his church’s choir would grow up to be a TV mogul.
His show, The Merv Griffin Show, was the perfect avenue to give a voice to many of America's most extraordinary personalities. But it was also an outlet to showcase Merv’s incredible talents and almost larger-than-life personality. The show’s success was unprecedented and it remains a classic to this day.

Mervyn Edward "Merv" Griffin, Jr. (July 6, 1925 – August 12, 2007) was a U.S. television host, musician, singer, actor, and media mogul. He began his career as a radio and big band singer who went on to appear in film and on Broadway. From 1965 to 1986 Griffin hosted his own talk show, The Merv Griffin Show, produced by Westinghouse Broadcasting (also known as Group W). He also created the game shows Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune, Click, Ruckus, and Merv Griffin's Crosswords with his own television production companies, Merv Griffin Enterprises and Merv Griffin Entertainment. During his lifetime, Griffin was considered an entertainment business magnate.
Early life
Griffin was born into a Irish American family on July 6, 1925, in San Mateo, California to Mervyn Edward Griffin, Sr., a stock-broker, and Rita Elizabeth Griffin (née Robinson), a homemaker. Raised as a Roman Catholic, Griffin started singing in his church choir as a boy, and by his teens was earning extra money as a church organist. His abilities as a pianist played a part in his early entry into show business.

Neil Levang was an American musician who was best known from television's The Lawrence Welk Show, playing guitar, violin, and banjo. His talents took him through a journey of hosting his own radio show and eventually landing a permanent position on The Lawrence Welk Show, where he stayed with the Welk Band until its final show in 1982.
"Ghost Riders In The Sky" is a captivating tune that showcases LeVang's incredible musicianship. As a studio musician, LeVang played on several records for artists such as Glen Campbell, Frank Zappa, Bobby Darin, Bobbi Gentry, David Clayton Thomas, Neal Hefti ("Batman Theme"), Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, Neil Diamond, and Noel Boggs.
LeVang's career spanned various television shows, including Little House on the Prairie, The Ed Sullivan Show, The Brady Bunch, The Monkees, Highway to Heaven, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, and a host of Hanna-Barbera cartoons. He was also the featured guitarist with Naomi and Wynonna Judd on the 1985 and 1986 Academy of Country Music Association Awards television broadcast.
Neil LeVang's impact on the music industry can still be felt today. His work has been celebrated and remembered through various publications and awards. He passed away in Canyon Country, California at the age of 83, leaving behind a rich musical legacy.
