Gonur Tepe is an archaeological site of about 55 hectares in Turkmenistan that was inhabited by Indo-Iranian peoples until sometime in the 2nd millennium BCE dating back to 2500 BCE. It is located about 60 km north of Mary, Turkmenistan (the capital city of Mary Province).
The site was discovered by Greek-Russian archaeologist Viktor Sarianidi. Sarianidi discovered a palace, a fortified mud-brick enclosure, and temples with fire altars which he believes were dedicated to the Zoroastrian religion. He also found what appears to be the boiler for the ritual drink soma, which is mentioned in the Rigveda and also in the Avesta as haoma. Sarianidi says he also found dishes with traces of cannabis, poppy and ephedrine. According to Sarianidi, this discovery strengthens the theory that these were the ingredients of soma.
The northern part of the complex had a central citadel-like structure about 100 by 180 m (330 by 590 ft) in size. A southern complex is about 1.5 hectares in size. The site was most likely abandoned after the course of the Murghab River shifted to the west. Gonur is among the largest ruins in the Morghab delta region; over 150 ancient settlements dating to the early Bronze Age (2500-1700 BCE) have been found there.

September 2010 site visit to the Bronze Age (2nd millenium BC) archaeological site of Gonur-Depe in Turkmenistan's Karakum Desert. In 2006, the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation supported a project to conserve the mud brick walls of this ancient city, once the capital and cultural center of Margiana (Margush). The Ambassadors Fund supported additional conservation work at this site in 2007.

The break up of the Soviet Union has led to the opening up of one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological treasures.
Now an international archaeological team is excavating Merv, one of the most significant capitals on the ancient Silk Route.
But just as the world wakes up to its existence, Merv is in danger of being lost.
Rising damp from the Karakum Canal, created by the Russians in the 1950s, is disintegrating the ancient mud brick buildings.
Today there's not much more than a few disintegrating mud brick monuments.
But at one time Merv was one of the major capitals on the ancient Silk Route between China and the West.
It rivalled Damascus, Baghdad and even Cairo as a trading centre.
Nowadays, few people live here... most trade is done outside the city.
Perestroika and the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1992 led to the opening up of Merv to archaeologists for the first time in 70 years.
Following this period of openness, the International Merv Project was established with a team of archaeologists from around the world.
The I-M-P is co-ordinated by the British Museum, University College London and the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.
Team members include Georgina Herrmann, from U-C-L, and Kakamurad Kurbansakhatov from the A-S-T.
During the Soviet period Herrmann knew about Merv only from occasional publications from her Soviet counterparts.
When Herrmann first saw Merv she says she was overwhelmed by its sheer size and the fact that the mud brick buildings had survived for more than a thousand years.

"Merv is a very special site, among many things because of the way it developed, there are a whole series of cities not built one on top of each other as lets say Jerusalem, but side by side, so each of them is a sort of time capsule offering you the chance to look at it archaeologically right on the surface. And this of course is very exciting, so we can look at the different periods and create the history of the city through the millennia."

During the 11th Century under the Seljuq sultans, Merv was one of the world's largest and most cosmopolitan centres.
Merv was the eastern capital of the Seljuqs, a Turkic tribe whose rule ran from Central Asia westward to Anatolia and southward to Arabia.
It was also a famous centre of learning, attracting mathematicians and astronomers from all over the world.
The 13th Century saw the end of the Seljuks. Mongol hordes attacked Merv three times - resulting in the death of over a (m) million citizens.
Merv was later revived in the 15th Century - when Timurid ruler Shah Rukh, a distant relative of Gengis Khan, built a new city a few kilometres from the ruined Seljuk capital.
The Timurid city grew and prospered - but never reached the significance of the Seljuq dynasty.
For a time Merv was used as a military base for the Soviet Union's offensive in Afghanistan, and so was completely out of bounds to ordinary citizens - and more importantly archaeologists.
In the 1950s the Soviets diverted water from the Oxus River to create the Karakum Canal to enable cotton to be grown in the region.
The Karakum Canal caused a double environmental blow. The draining of the Oxus River not only resulted in the drying up of the Aral Sea, but may have condemned Merv's monuments to death.
The raised water table has led to a "greening" of the desert.
Formerly dry barren land is now covered in grass.
Rising damp is eating away the monuments, and large chunks have already disappeared.

Turkmenistan has been at the crossroads of civilizations for centuries. In medieval times, Merv was one of the great cities of the Islamic world and an important stop on the Silk Road, a caravan route used for trade with China until the mid-15th century. Annexed by the Russian Empire in 1881, Turkmenistan later figured prominently in the anti-Bolshevik movement in Central Asia. In 1924, Turkmenistan became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic (Turkmen SSR); it became independent upon the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Turkmenistan possesses the world's fourth largest reserves of natural gas resources. Most of the country is covered by the Karakum (Black Sand) Desert. Since 1993, citizens have received government-provided electricity, water and natural gas free of charge.

The Bronze Age is a time period characterized by the use of bronze, proto-writing, and other early features of urban civilization. The Bronze Age is the second principal period of the three-age Stone-Bronze-Iron system, as proposed in modern times by Christian Jürgensen Thomsen, for classifying and studying ancient societies.
An ancient civilization is defined to be in the Bronze Age either by smelting its own copper and alloying with tin, arsenic, or other metals, or by trading for bronze from production areas elsewhere. Copper-tin ores are rare, as reflected in the fact that there were no tin bronzes in western Asia before trading in bronze began in the third millennium BC. Worldwide, the Bronze Age generally followed the Neolithic period, but in some parts of the world, the Copper Age served as a transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. Although the Iron Age generally followed the Bronze Age, in some areas, the Iron Age intruded directly on the Neolithic from outside the region.

Το Γκεμπεκλί Τεπέ (Göbekli Tepe) (αναφέρεται στα ελληνικά και Γκιομπεκλί Τεπέ, αν και η προφορά του είναι πιο κοντά στο «Γκεμπεκλί») είναι αρχαιολογική θέση στη σημερινή Τουρκία, που βρίσκεται ακόμα υπό ανασκαφή. Το Γκεμπεκλί Τεπέ είναι ένα ύψωμα 760 μέτρα πάνω από την επιφάνεια της θάλασσας, που βρίσκεται στη Νοτιοανατολική Τουρκία, κοντά στα σύνορα με τη Συρία και απέχει 12 χιλιόμετρα από την πόλη Ούρφα. Σε αυτή την περιοχή έχουν βρεθεί προϊστορικοί ναοί της νεολιθικής εποχής που έχουν χρονολογηθεί γύρω στο 11.500 π.Χ. και είναι οι αρχαιότεροι στον κόσμο. Gonur Tepe: Ancient Lost Civlization Buried Under The Sand
Gonur Tepe is an archaeological site of about 55 hectares in Turkmenistan that was inhabited by Indo-Iranian peoples until sometime in the 2nd millennium BCE dating back to 2500 BCE. It is located about 60 km north of Mary, Turkmenistan (the capital city of Mary Province). The site was discovered by Greek-Russian archaeologist Viktor Sarianidi. Sarianidi discovered a palace, a fortified mud-brick enclosure, and temples with fire altars which he believes were dedicated to the Zoroastrian religion. He also found what appears to be the boiler for the ritual drink soma, which is mentioned in the Rigveda and also in the Avesta as haoma. September 2010 site visit to the Bronze Age (2nd millenium BC) archaeological site of Gonur-Depe in Turkmenistan's Karakum Desert. In 2006, the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation supported a project to conserve the mud brick walls of this ancient city, once the capital and cultural center of Margiana (Margush). Now an international archaeological team is excavating Merv, one of the most significant capitals on the ancient Silk Route. But just as the world wakes up to its existence, Merv is in danger of being lost. Rising damp from the Karakum Canal, created by the Russians in the 1950s, is disintegrating the ancient mud brick buildings. Today there's not much more than a few disintegrating mud brick monuments. But at one time Merv was one of the major capitals on the ancient Silk Route between China and the West. It rivalled Damascus, Baghdad and even Cairo as a trading centre. Gonur Tepe is an archaeological site of about 55 hectares in Turkmenistan that was inhabited by Indo-Iranian peoples until sometime in the 2nd millennium BCE dating back to 2500 BCE. It is located about 60 km north of Mary, Turkmenistan (the capital city of Mary Province).
The site was discovered by Greek-Russian archaeologist Viktor Sarianidi. Sarianidi discovered a palace, a fortified mud-brick enclosure, and temples with fire altars which he believes were dedicated to the Zoroastrian religion. He also found what appears to be the boiler for the ritual drink soma, which is mentioned in the Rigveda and also in the Avesta as haoma. Sarianidi says he also found dishes with traces of cannabis, poppy and ephedrine. According to Sarianidi, this discovery strengthens the theory that these were the ingredients of soma.
The northern part of the complex had a central citadel-like structure about 100 by 180 m (330 by 590 ft) in size. A southern complex is about 1.5 hectares in size. The site was most likely abandoned after the course of the Murghab River shifted to the west. Gonur is among the largest ruins in the Morghab delta region; over 150 ancient settlements dating to the early Bronze Age (2500-1700 BCE) have been found there.

The break up of the Soviet Union has led to the opening up of one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological treasures.
Now an international archaeological team is excavating Merv, one of the most significant capitals on the ancient Silk Route.
But just as the world wakes up to its existence, Merv is in danger of being lost.
Rising damp from the Karakum Canal, created by the Russians in the 1950s, is disintegrating the ancient mud brick buildings.
Today there's not much more than a few disintegrating mud brick monuments.
But at one time Merv was one of the major capitals on the ancient Silk Route between China and the West.
It rivalled Damascus, Baghdad and even Cairo as a trading centre.
Nowadays, few people live here... most trade is done outside the city.
Perestroika and the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1992 led to the opening up of Merv to archaeologists for the first time in 70 years.
Following this period of openness, the International Merv Project was established with a team of archaeologists from around the world.
The I-M-P is co-ordinated by the British Museum, University College London and the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.
Team members include Georgina Herrmann, from U-C-L, and Kakamurad Kurbansakhatov from the A-S-T.
During the Soviet period Herrmann knew about Merv only from occasional publications from her Soviet counterparts.
When Herrmann first saw Merv she says she was overwhelmed by its sheer size and the fact that the mud brick buildings had survived for more than a thousand years.

"Merv is a very special site, among many things because of the way it developed, there are a whole series of cities not built one on top of each other as lets say Jerusalem, but side by side, so each of them is a sort of time capsule offering you the chance to look at it archaeologically right on the surface. During the 11th Century under the Seljuq sultans, Merv was one of the world's largest and most cosmopolitan centres.
Merv was the eastern capital of the Seljuqs, a Turkic tribe whose rule ran from Central Asia westward to Anatolia and southward to Arabia.
It was also a famous centre of learning, attracting mathematicians and astronomers from all over the world.
The 13th Century saw the end of the Seljuks. Mongol hordes attacked Merv three times - resulting in the death of over a (m) million citizens.
Merv was later revived in the 15th Century - when Timurid ruler Shah Rukh, a distant relative of Gengis Khan, built a new city a few kilometres from the ruined Seljuk capital.
The Timurid city grew and prospered - but never reached the significance of the Seljuq dynasty.
For a time Merv was used as a military base for the Soviet Union's offensive in Afghanistan, and so was completely out of bounds to ordinary citizens - and more importantly archaeologists.
In the 1950s the Soviets diverted water from the Oxus River to create the Karakum Canal to enable cotton to be grown in the region.
The Karakum Canal caused a double environmental blow. The draining of the Oxus River not only resulted in the drying up of the Aral Sea, but may have condemned Merv's monuments to death.
The raised water table has led to a "greening" of the desert.
Formerly dry barren land is now covered in grass.
Rising damp is eating away the monuments, and large chunks have already disappeared.

The break up of the Soviet Union has led to the opening up of one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological treasures.
Now an international archaeological team is excavating Merv, one of the most significant capitals on the ancient Silk Route.
But just as the world wakes up to its existence, Merv is in danger of being lost.
Rising damp from the Karakum Canal, created by the Russians in the 1950s, is disintegrating the ancient mud brick buildings.
Today there's not much more than a few disintegrating mud brick monuments.
But at one time Merv was one of the major capitals on the ancient Silk Route between China and the West.
It rivalled Damascus, Baghdad and even Cairo as a trading centre.
Nowadays, few people live here... most trade is done outside the city.
Perestroika and the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1992 led to the opening up of Merv to archaeologists for the first time in 70 years.
Following this period of openness, the International Merv Project was established with a team of archaeologists from around the world.
The I-M-P is co-ordinated by the British Museum, University College London and the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.
Team members include Georgina Herrmann, from U-C-L, and Kakamurad Kurbansakhatov from the A-S-T.
During the Soviet period Herrmann knew about Merv only from occasional publications from her Soviet counterparts.
When Herrmann first saw Merv she says she was overwhelmed by its sheer size and the fact that the mud brick buildings had survived for more than a thousand years.

"Merv is a very special site, among many things because of the way it developed, there are a whole series of cities not built one on top of each other as lets say Jerusalem, but side by side, so each of them is a sort of time capsule offering you the chance to look at it archaeologically right on the surface. We will also visit Kipchak village (10 km outside Ashgabat) to see an impressive complex of the biggest mosque in Turkmenistan and the family mausoleum of the first President. Finish the day with a tour of the National Museum of History (more than 327.000 objects on a display) exhibiting exclusive ancient artefacts from different historical & archaeological sites of Turkmenistan, such as Old Nisa, Ancient Merv, Kunya-Urgench & others. Overnight at hotel Grand Turkmen/Ak Altyn/Ashgabat.
Day-2 Ashgabat – Mary/Gonur Depe (B, L-picnic)
Early morning transfer to airport for flight to Mary (40 minutes by Boeing 717 or 737). On arrival in Mary, we drive to Gonur Depe, which used to be the capital of the legendary Margush country. After two hours drive through fields and villages and another hour through the desert, we arrive at an important archaeological site, the center of a remarkable Bronze Age civilization, discovered in 1972 and explored continuously till 2012 by Prof. Victor Sarianidi. Gonur Depe, as the professor describes, is a palace complex of 10 ha, represented by partly excavated earthen walls of former administrative buildings and religious structures of the Zoroastrian type. After about two hours of sightseeing, we will have a picnic-lunch, lunch boxes that we bring with us from the city. Return to Mary for rest. Overnight at hotel Mary/Margush.
Day-3 Mary – Ashgabat (B)
Breakfast at hotel. We drive east of Mary, towards Bayram-Ali, the contemporary re-incarnation of and humble suburb of the glorious Ancient Merv (UNESCO World Heritage Site). One of the major archaeological sites of Central Asia, Merv played an important part in the development of the Silk Road for more than 2000 years. Within the limits of the archaeological park, which is 1200 ha, we will have a chance to observe all constituent parts of the “wandering city”. A series of adjacent cities, which can be roughly divided into the ancient (Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala), the medieval (Sultan Kala with its suburbs), and post-medieval (Abdulla-Khan Kala and Bayram-Ali-Khan Kala), appeared in the course of time as a token of the natural progress of the city from initial stages of its existence to a more advanced level. Besides remnants of the cities of Merv, we will visit the VI-IX cc. AD forts of Big and Little Kyz-Kalas, excellent examples of the so-called corrugated Koshks; the splendid XII c. mausoleums of Sultan Sanjar and Muhammed ibn-Zeyd, demonstrating exquisite Seljuk period brickwork and architectural decor. Desert, Mountains, and Historic Sites (11 days)
Day-1 Arrive in Ashgabat (B)
Early morning arrival in Ashgabat. Private transfer to hotel. Accommodation in hotel Grand Turkmen/Ak Altyn.
Breakfast at hotel. Late morning or early afternoon we begin the day with orientation tour of the city. We will see independence period parks and monuments, such as the Monument and Park of Independence (looking like a white-marble “Eiffel Tower” standing in a beautiful park) and a fountain-monument devoted to the 10th anniversary of independence (sculptural depiction of ten Akhal-Tekke horses placed on the top of a beautiful fountain), impressive Ertoghrul Ghazi mosque. We will also visit Kipchak village (10 km outside Ashgabat) to see an impressive complex of the biggest mosque in Turkmenistan and the family mausoleum of the first President. Finish the day with a tour of the National Museum of History (more than 327.000 objects on a display) exhibiting exclusive ancient artefacts from different historical & archaeological sites of Turkmenistan, such as Old Nisa, Ancient Merv, Kunya-Urgench & others. Overnight at hotel Grand Turkmen/Ak Altyn/Ashgabat.
Day-2 Ashgabat – Mary/Gonur Depe (B, L-picnic)
Early morning transfer to airport for flight to Mary (40 minutes by Boeing 717 or 737). On arrival in Mary, we drive to Gonur Depe, which used to be the capital of the legendary Margush country. After two hours drive through fields and villages and another hour through the desert, we arrive at an important archaeological site, the center of a remarkable Bronze Age civilization, discovered in 1972 and explored continuously till 2012 by Prof. Victor Sarianidi. Gonur Depe, as the professor describes, is a palace complex of 10 ha, represented by partly excavated earthen walls of former administrative buildings and religious structures of the Zoroastrian type. After about two hours of sightseeing, we will have a picnic-lunch, lunch boxes that we bring with us from the city. Return to Mary for rest. Overnight at hotel Mary/Margush.
Day-3 Mary – Ashgabat (B)
Breakfast at hotel. We drive east of Mary, towards Bayram-Ali, the contemporary re-incarnation of and humble suburb of the glorious Ancient Merv (UNESCO World Heritage Site). One of the major archaeological sites of Central Asia, Merv played an important part in the development of the Silk Road for more than 2000 years. Within the limits of the archaeological park, which is 1200 ha, we will have a chance to observe all constituent parts of the “wandering city”. A series of adjacent cities, which can be roughly divided into the ancient (Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala), the medieval (Sultan Kala with its suburbs), and post-medieval (Abdulla-Khan Kala and Bayram-Ali-Khan Kala), appeared in the course of time as a token of the natural progress of the city from initial stages of its existence to a more advanced level. Besides remnants of the cities of Merv, we will visit the VI-IX cc. AD forts of Big and Little Kyz-Kalas, excellent examples of the so-called corrugated Koshks; the splendid XII c. mausoleums of Sultan Sanjar and Muhammed ibn-Zeyd, demonstrating exquisite Seljuk period brickwork and architectural decor. The break up of the Soviet Union has led to the opening up of one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological treasures.
Now an international archaeological team is excavating Merv, one of the most significant capitals on the ancient Silk Route.
But just as the world wakes up to its existence, Merv is in danger of being lost.
Rising damp from the Karakum Canal, created by the Russians in the 1950s, is disintegrating the ancient mud brick buildings.
Today there's not much more than a few disintegrating mud brick monuments.
But at one time Merv was one of the major capitals on the ancient Silk Route between China and the West.
It rivalled Damascus, Baghdad and even Cairo as a trading centre.
Nowadays, few people live here... most trade is done outside the city.
Perestroika and the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1992 led to the opening up of Merv to archaeologists for the first time in 70 years.
Following this period of openness, the International Merv Project was established with a team of archaeologists from around the world.
The I-M-P is co-ordinated by the British Museum, University College London and the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.
Team members include Georgina Herrmann, from U-C-L, and Kakamurad Kurbansakhatov from the A-S-T.
During the Soviet period Herrmann knew about Merv only from occasional publications from her Soviet counterparts.
When Herrmann first saw Merv she says she was overwhelmed by its sheer size and the fact that the mud brick buildings had survived for more than a thousand years.

"Merv is a very special site, among many things because of the way it developed, there are a whole series of cities not built one on top of each other as lets say Jerusalem, but side by side, so each of them is a sort of time capsule offering you the chance to look at it archaeologically right on the surface. And this of course is very exciting, so we can look at the different periods and create the history of the city through the millennia."

During the 11th Century under the Seljuq sultans, Merv was one of the world's largest and most cosmopolitan centres.
Merv was the eastern capital of the Seljuqs, a Turkic tribe whose rule ran from Central Asia westward to Anatolia and southward to Arabia.
It was also a famous centre of learning, attracting mathematicians and astronomers from all over the world.
The 13th Century saw the end of the Seljuks. Mongol hordes attacked Merv three times - resulting in the death of over a (m) million citizens.
Merv was later revived in the 15th Century - when Timurid ruler Shah Rukh, a distant relative of Gengis Khan, built a new city a few kilometres from the ruined Seljuk capital.
The Timurid city grew and prospered - but never reached the significance of the Seljuq dynasty.
For a time Merv was used as a military base for the Soviet Union's offensive in Afghanistan, and so was completely out of bounds to ordinary citizens - and more importantly archaeologists.
In the 1950s the Soviets diverted water from the Oxus River to create the Karakum Canal to enable cotton to be grown in the region.
The Karakum Canal caused a double environmental blow. The draining of the Oxus River not only resulted in the drying up of the Aral Sea, but may have condemned Merv's monuments to death.
The raised water table has led to a "greening" of the desert.
Formerly dry barren land is now covered in grass.
Rising damp is eating away the monuments, and large chunks have already disappeared.
