The Darvaza Crater, which is the actual name of the 'Door to Hell', has sparked the curiosity of many over the years, but George Kourounis became the first to actually step in.
In the desolate landscape of northern Turkmenistan lies a fiery crater that would impress even Dante.
Nobody's really sure how the gaping hole of fire known as the 'Door to Hell' came to be. Some say it was a drilling mishap made worse by attempts to burn off the gas several decades ago.
Whatever it was, the Darvaza Crater has sparked the curiosity of many over the years, including that of George Kourounis.
He recently plunged himself into the mysterious burning pit to see what really goes on down there, making him the first person to dare to do so.
At the top of the list of thing's he'd hoped to find was life, as such a discovery could provide valuable insights into what may or may not be living on hot, volatile planets.
The endeavor was a success, as bacteria were detected in some of the soil samples he took from the bottom.
He said, "...everywhere you look it's thousands of these small fires. The sound was like that of a jet engine...You feel very, very small and very vulnerable in a place like that."

You might have heard legends or myths about people descending into the Underworld through special gateways or portals. While most of them are just stories, some of them are actually based on real life locations. Join us as we look at 5 entrances to Hell that you can visit.
5. Hellam Township, USA
Hellam Township is one of the oldest towns in the state of Pennsylvania. Established in 1736, there are a couple of old and disturbing urban legends surrounding the place that hold even to this day, both stating that the 7 Gates of Hell reside in that area.
The first version of the legend goes that there was a mental institution on Trout Run Road in Hellam Township tucked away from prying eyes. In the 19th Century the asylum caught fire, and because it was tucked away, it was not reached in time by the fire service. Most of those residing in the institution were said to have burned to death and those who escaped into the woods were beaten to death by the guards.
4. Mount Osore, Japan
More than 800 meters high, Mount Osore, which translates as Mount Fear in Japanese, definitely lives up to its name. This volcano that last erupted well over 200 years ago is widely believed to be the location of an entrance to hell.
The popular myth is that a stream on the mountain that runs into Lake Osore nearby is a parallel of the Sanzu River, or the River of Three Crossings that the souls of the dead must cross to journey onwards to the afterlife. As a result of this, it is considered the place where the living world and the world of the Dead join.

Avernus is a volcanic crater near Cumae in southern Italy. The ancient Romans used to believe the 2 mile wide crater to be the entrance to the underworld. Within it is Lake Avernus, properly cited as the "door to hell" by the Roman poet Virgil. In Virgil's epic poem Aeneid, the Trojan hero Aeneas descends into the underworld through a cave near the lake, where he would then meet his deceased lover and father.

Located on Ming Mountain in China, this eerie collection of buildings and structures were separated from the actual city of Fengdu and left behind as a ghost city. This is after Fengdu villagers had to relocate to higher ground due to rising water levels after the construction of a dam. However, the ghost city has gained new life in recent years due to becoming a tourist attraction for those interested in the underworld imagery it presents. Fengdu has been surrounded by hellish imagery and legends for hundreds of years, and is still believed by many to be a gateway to hell on Earth.

At the center of Central Asia's Karakum Desert lies a vast molten cavity roughly the size of a standard football field. In it, ravaging flames have been burning non-stop for over 40 years, and will continue to do so for God knows how long.
The story behind the fiery crater known as the "Door to Hell", is that in the early 70s, Soviet petrochemical scientists and engineers were drilling the Turkmenistan region in search of oil. Soon, they found a natural gas pocket near the village of Derweze. However, the ground beneath it suddenly collapsed, burying the whole drilling rig and camp into a massive 70 meter wide crater.
Fearing the release of poisonous methane gas into the nearby population, they decided the best option was to just set the whole thing on fire, thinking that it will burn out in a few days or weeks. They could not have been more wrong. 4 decades later, the fire still shows no sign of stopping any time soon.
The 21 meter deep hole is now a popular tourist attraction, with visitors coming from all over the world wanting to get a glimpse of hell. The entire area is not fenced off, and visitors can - at their own risk - stand at the very edge of the crater. In 2014, Canadian explorer George Kouronis undertook an expedition into the pit to establish whether life forms can exist in such harsh environment. With a heat-reflective suit and climbing harness made of Kevlar, he is the first known human to descend into Turkmenistan's Door to Hell.

Geography
The gas crater is located near the Derweze village. It is in the middle of the Karakum Desert, about 260 kilometres (160 mi) north of Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan. The gas reserve found here is one of the largest in the world. The name "Door to Hell" was given to the field by the locals, referring to the fire, boiling mud, and orange flames in the large crater, which has a diameter of 70 metres (230 ft). The hot spots range over an area with a width of 60 metres (200 ft) and to a depth of about 20 metres (66 ft).

Hell
In many mythological, folklore and religious traditions, hell is a place of torment and punishment in an afterlife. Satan's Hollow
Satan's Hollow is a fixed shooter arcade game released by Bally Midway in 1982, subsequently converted to the Atari 8-bit family, and in 1984 to Commodore 64. The game uses the same flight-controller style joystick with built-in trigger as Midway's Tron, released the same year.
Gameplay
The player must shoot flying formations of gargoyles in order to pick up pieces of a bridge that must be built over a river of lava. Once the bridge is completed, the player can cross it to face Satan. Destroying him scores bonus points based on the number of waves completed to that point, and also upgrades the rocket launcher. The player then resumes the battle against the gargoyles and must start building a new, longer bridge in order to fight Satan again. The sky darkens on later waves, making it harder to see the enemies.
As the game progresses, the gargoyles begin to throw exploding eggs, along with rocks that can destroy bridge sections; the player also occasionally faces disembodied devil heads that float around the screen and spit fire. In addition to firing rockets at the enemies, the player can use a shield that will destroy any enemy touching it. However, this shield can only be used for a short time before it must shut down to recharge. Gargoyles will sometimes attempt to steal a ship from the player's reserve lives, similar to Galaga.

Door to Hell "Gate to Hell"
The "Door to Hell" is a natural gas field in Derweze, Turkmenistan, that collapsed into an underground cavern in 1971, becoming a natural gas crater. Geologists set it on fire to prevent the spread of methane gas, and it has been burning continuously since then. The diameter of the crater is 69 metres (226 ft), and its depth is 30 metres (98 ft). The crater is a popular tourist attraction. In the past five years 50,000 tourists have visited the site. The gas crater has a total area of 5,350 m2, the size of an American football field. 5. Hellam Township, USA
Hellam Township is one of the oldest towns in the state of Pennsylvania. Established in 1736, there are a couple of old and disturbing urban legends surrounding the place that hold even to this day, both stating that the 7 Gates of Hell reside in that area.
The first version of the legend goes that there was a mental institution on Trout Run Road in Hellam Township tucked away from prying eyes. In the 19th Century the asylum caught fire, and because it was tucked away, it was not reached in time by the fire service. Most of those residing in the institution were said to have burned to death and those who escaped into the woods were beaten to death by the guards.
4. Mount Osore, Japan
More than 800 meters high, Mount Osore, which translates as Mount Fear in Japanese, definitely lives up to its name. This volcano that last erupted well over 200 years ago is widely believed to be the location of an entrance to hell.
The popular myth is that a stream on the mountain that runs into Lake Osore nearby is a parallel of the Sanzu River, or the River of Three Crossings that the souls of the dead must cross to journey onwards to the afterlife. As a result of this, it is considered the place where the living world and the world of the Dead join.
3. Lake Avernus, Italy
Avernus is a volcanic crater near Cumae in southern Italy. The ancient Romans used to believe the 2 mile wide crater to be the entrance to the underworld. Within it is Lake Avernus, properly cited as the "door to hell" by the Roman poet Virgil. In Virgil's epic poem Aeneid, the Trojan hero Aeneas descends into the underworld through a cave near the lake, where he would then meet his deceased lover and father.
2. Fengdu Ghost City, China
Located on Ming Mountain in China, this eerie collection of buildings and structures were separated from the actual city of Fengdu and left behind as a ghost city. This is after Fengdu villagers had to relocate to higher ground due to rising water levels after the construction of a dam. However, the ghost city has gained new life in recent years due to becoming a tourist attraction for those interested in the underworld imagery it presents. Fengdu has been surrounded by hellish imagery and legends for hundreds of years, and is still believed by many to be a gateway to hell on Earth.

At the center of Central Asia's Karakum Desert lies a vast molten cavity roughly the size of a standard football field. In it, ravaging flames have been burning non-stop for over 40 years, and will continue to do so for God knows how long.
The story behind the fiery crater known as the "Door to Hell", is that in the early 70s, Soviet petrochemical scientists and engineers were drilling the Turkmenistan region in search of oil. Soon, they found a natural gas pocket near the village of Derweze. However, the ground beneath it suddenly collapsed, burying the whole drilling rig and camp into a massive 70 meter wide crater.
Fearing the release of poisonous methane gas into the nearby population, they decided the best option was to just set the whole thing on fire, thinking that it will burn out in a few days or weeks. They could not have been more wrong. 4 decades later, the fire still shows no sign of stopping any time soon.
The 21 meter deep hole is now a popular tourist attraction, with visitors coming from all over the world wanting to get a glimpse of hell. The entire area is not fenced off, and visitors can - at their own risk - stand at the very edge of the crater. In 2014, Canadian explorer George Kouronis undertook an expedition into the pit to establish whether life forms can exist in such harsh environment. With a heat-reflective suit and climbing harness made of Kevlar, he is the first known human to descend into Turkmenistan's Door to Hell.

The "Door to Hell" is a natural gas field in Derweze, Turkmenistan, that collapsed into an underground cavern in 1971, becoming a natural gas crater. Geologists set it on fire to prevent the spread of methane gas, and it has been burning continuously since then. The diameter of the crater is 69 metres (226 ft), and its depth is 30 metres (98 ft).
The crater is a popular tourist attraction. In the past five years 50,000 tourists have visited the site. The gas crater has a total area of 5,350 m2, the size of an American football field. The surrounding area is also popular for wild desert camping.

Eerie. Sulfuric. Hissing. A few of the words used in our travel guide, and more intriguing than those of a typical Japanese destination. We headed north to the Aomori prefecture to witness these curious adjectives first hand. Once in Mutsu, we boarded the local bus to Mt. Osorezen. The road up the mountain proved scenic. Eerie. Sulfuric. Hissing. A few of the words used in our travel guide, and more intriguing than those of a typical Japanese destination. We headed north to the Aomori prefecture to witness these curious adjectives first hand.
Once in Mutsu, we boarded the local bus to Mt. Osorezen. The road up the mountain proved scenic. Subtly, quietly, slow chanting was piped through the buses intercom, electronic ghosts in the crackling of broken speakers. A glance at the only other foreigner we'd seen for half a week brought a moment of comfort as we shared a similar edition of the Lonely Planet. Comrades via travelogue!
The brakes squeaked in discordant harmony and there was an unannounced, (or perhaps announced - who knows) roadside stop to a mountain spring. The locals escaped the bus to fill waiting cups with cool water. Willing to try anything we participated in drinking. A sudden flash of potential intestinal regret, but we shrugged it off and returned to the crackling.
As the bus rolled to the top of the mountain the initial impression was normalcy, but then the breeze picked up and you could hear a squeaking rising in volume with the swirls of the gusts. We walked onto temple grounds and the pinwheels left behind by grieving parents came into view, thousands of colorful sticks whirling, some intact, some forced apart, others lying sideways on the rock cairns. The images viewed through a lens seemed limitless.
A few shooting hours later, hungry and completely windblown, we entered the only cafe for a cool ice cream treat. Was it ice cream? We don't know. It was cold... sorta. Paying the bill the waitress asked hastily, "Bus-Ka?" Without our answer she ran out of the restaurant flagging down the latest return ride into town. Many "X" hand gestures later we convinced her we were not ready to leave.
Going back for a second pass, there was still plenty of viewfinder and shutter exertion remaining. A few hundred exposures later the light turned into magic hour. Perfect! Unfortunately it was time to catch the final bus to Mutsu which was anxiously idling in the parking lot 500 meters away. Grabbing our gear and making a run for it we both saw the same "must have" image. Only one of us could get it while the other held the bus.
"You can do it, get the shot!"
I ran to the eerie statues silhouetted against the hissing sulphur sky. I fired the shutter 3 times. Best shots of the day.

Number 10. The Darvaze Gas Crater. In Turkmenistan is the burning, stinking, sulphurous crater known as the Gate to Hell. In 1971 Soviet engineers were drilling the area known to hold one of the largest deposits of natural gas. Number 9. The Well Of Chand Baori. Legend has it that this 13 story water well was carved out of the rock by spirits in a single night, and dedicated to the Hindu goddess of happiness. There are 3500 perfectly symmetrical steps leading to the bottom, which is about 10 degrees cooler than at the surface. Number 8. The KTB Superdeep Borehole. Starting in 1982, the German Ministry of Research began a scientific exploration drilling program, deep into the earth's crust, that would last more than 12 years and cost more than a third of a billion dollars, their most expensive geo-science project ever. Number 7. The Guatamala City Sinkhole. In 2010, a massive hole suddenly opened up in the middle of the city and swallowed a three story factory house, along with fifteen people inside. The cause was attributed to Tropical Storm Agatha, which impacted Guatamala just three days after the eruption of Volcano Pacaya. Number 6. Siberian Craters. Yet another new geological phenomenon was discovered in 2014 when a reindeer herder discovered a two hundred foot crater in a remote area known as The End Of The World. Number 5. Indiana Dunes National Park. An amazing new geological phenomenon was only discovered in the last few years, when shifting sands have suddenly opened up massive sinkholes beneath travelers' feet. Number 4. Monticello Dam Hole - This Majestic spillhole, also known as the "glory hole" is part of the Monticello Dam in Napa County, California. This hole is the largest spillhole in the world and leads down a 304 foot or 93 m tall hole which drains out out of the bottom of the dam. Number 3. Devil's Sinkhole. This Texan National Natural Landmark is an enormous vertical cavern 50 feet wide and 350 feet deep. Historically it's been used as a place of shelter by early American settlers and countless generations of Native Americans. Number 2. Derinkuyu. In central Turkey, a man was renovating his traditional home when he discovered a hidden room with a covered hole in the wall. Investigation revealed that the opening led into a massive man-made cave system that had been carved out of the rock over three thousand years ago, to form an underground city. Number 1. The Oak Island Money Pit. In 1795 witnesses thought they saw pirates burying treasure on a small coastal island in Nova Scotia. So they started digging, and digging... and digging... to over 130 feet deep, with tantalizing clues revealed every ten feet or so, some promising a treasure worth hundreds of millions or perhaps much much more.

Door to Hell "Gate to Hell"
The "Door to Hell" is a natural gas field in Derweze, Turkmenistan, that collapsed into an underground cavern in 1971, becoming a natural gas crater. Geologists set it on fire to prevent the spread of methane gas, and it has been burning continuously since then. The diameter of the crater is 69 metres (226 ft), and its depth is 30 metres (98 ft). The crater is a popular tourist attraction. In the past five years 50,000 tourists have visited the site. The gas crater has a total area of 5,350 m2, the size of an American football field. The Darvaza Crater, which is the actual name of the 'Door to Hell', has sparked the curiosity of many over the years, but George Kourounis became the first to actually step in.
In the desolate landscape of northern Turkmenistan lies a fiery crater that would impress even Dante.
Nobody's really sure how the gaping hole of fire known as the 'Door to Hell' came to be. Some say it was a drilling mishap made worse by attempts to burn off the gas several decades ago.
Whatever it was, the Darvaza Crater has sparked the curiosity of many over the years, including that of George Kourounis.
He recently plunged himself into the mysterious burning pit to see what really goes on down there, making him the first person to dare to do so.
At the top of the list of thing's he'd hoped to find was life, as such a discovery could provide valuable insights into what may or may not be living on hot, volatile planets.
The endeavor was a success, as bacteria were detected in some of the soil samples he took from the bottom.
He said, "...everywhere you look it's thousands of these small fires. The sound was like that of a jet engine...You feel very, very small and very vulnerable in a place like that."

You might have heard legends or myths about people descending into the Underworld through special gateways or portals. While most of them are just stories, some of them are actually based on real life locations. Join us as we look at 5 entrances to Hell that you can visit.
5. Hellam Township, USA
Hellam Township is one of the oldest towns in the state of Pennsylvania. Established in 1736, there are a couple of old and disturbing urban legends surrounding the place that hold even to this day, both stating that the 7 Gates of Hell reside in that area.
The first version of the legend goes that there was a mental institution on Trout Run Road in Hellam Township tucked away from prying eyes. In the 19th Century the asylum caught fire, and because it was tucked away, it was not reached in time by the fire service. Most of those residing in the institution were said to have burned to death and those who escaped into the woods were beaten to death by the guards.
4. Mount Osore, Japan
More than 800 meters high, Mount Osore, which translates as Mount Fear in Japanese, definitely lives up to its name. This volcano that last erupted well over 200 years ago is widely believed to be the location of an entrance to hell.
The popular myth is that a stream on the mountain that runs into Lake Osore nearby is a parallel of the Sanzu River, or the River of Three Crossings that the souls of the dead must cross to journey onwards to the afterlife. As a result of this, it is considered the place where the living world and the world of the Dead join.
3. Lake Avernus, Italy
Avernus is a volcanic crater near Cumae in southern Italy. The ancient Romans used to believe the 2 mile wide crater to be the entrance to the underworld. Within it is Lake Avernus, properly cited as the "door to hell" by the Roman poet Virgil. In Virgil's epic poem Aeneid, the Trojan hero Aeneas descends into the underworld through a cave near the lake, where he would then meet his deceased lover and father.
2. Fengdu Ghost City, China
Located on Ming Mountain in China, this eerie collection of buildings and structures were separated from the actual city of Fengdu and left behind as a ghost city. This is after Fengdu villagers had to relocate to higher ground due to rising water levels after the construction of a dam. However, the ghost city has gained new life in recent years due to becoming a tourist attraction for those interested in the underworld imagery it presents. Fengdu has been surrounded by hellish imagery and legends for hundreds of years, and is still believed by many to be a gateway to hell on Earth.

At the center of Central Asia's Karakum Desert lies a vast molten cavity roughly the size of a standard football field. In it, ravaging flames have been burning non-stop for over 40 years, and will continue to do so for God knows how long.
The story behind the fiery crater known as the "Door to Hell", is that in the early 70s, Soviet petrochemical scientists and engineers were drilling the Turkmenistan region in search of oil. Soon, they found a natural gas pocket near the village of Derweze. However, the ground beneath it suddenly collapsed, burying the whole drilling rig and camp into a massive 70 meter wide crater.
Fearing the release of poisonous methane gas into the nearby population, they decided the best option was to just set the whole thing on fire, thinking that it will burn out in a few days or weeks. They could not have been more wrong. 4 decades later, the fire still shows no sign of stopping any time soon.
The 21 meter deep hole is now a popular tourist attraction, with visitors coming from all over the world wanting to get a glimpse of hell. The entire area is not fenced off, and visitors can - at their own risk - stand at the very edge of the crater. In 2014, Canadian explorer George Kouronis undertook an expedition into the pit to establish whether life forms can exist in such harsh environment. With a heat-reflective suit and climbing harness made of Kevlar, he is the first known human to descend into Turkmenistan's Door to Hell.

Researchers exploring the famous Twins Cave outside of Jerusalem have uncovered evidence of some pagan rituals, dating back to the Roman Empire, that suggest people may have believed the cave was a portal to this underworld.
