Charles E. Young '55 - UCR CHASS Group 1 Commencement - June 16, 2012
Dr. Charles E. Young is chancellor emeritus, and professor of political science and public policy at the University of California, Los Angeles. He was UCLA chancellor from 1968 to 1997, and president of the University of Florida from 1999 to 2004.
In recent years he has served as CEO of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and as president of the Qatar Foundation. He is a former chairman of the prestigious Association of American Universities, and has served on numerous educational commissions and corporate boards of directors, including semiconductor giant Intel.
Dr. Young received a B.A. with honors in political science from UCR in 1955, and was UCR's first student body president. He earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in political science from UCLA.

Charles Young ’55 is the recipient of the 2018 UCR Medallion. He was the first ever UC Riverside student body president, graduating in 1955 from UCR. He went on to earn a master’s and doctorate in political science from UCLA, where he later became Chancellor in 1968 at age 36. Chancellor Young was the youngest leader ever to head a UC campus, retiring in 1997 after 29 years in office as the longest-serving chief executive among leaders of the nation’s major universities.

Charles E. "Chuck" Young, has passed away at the age of 91 due to natural causes at his Sonoma, California residence.
Young's distinguished career at UCLA has left an indelible mark on the institution and the broader community.
Young's appointment as chancellor at the age of 36 in 1968 made him the youngest-ever chancellor in the University of California system.
Furthermore, he remains the only UCLA alumnus to have held the position of chancellor, adding a unique personal connection to his role.

In response to the budget crisis facing California higher education, the state legislature formed a joint committee to review the 1960 Master Plan for Higher Education. The Master Plan, authored largely by University of California president Clark Kerr, formalized the roles of the three higher ed systems: University of California, California State Colleges (now California State University), and community colleges. After a series of pivotal administrative roles, Young ascended to the chancellorship on September 1, 1968.
His role in expanding the UCLA Foundation and other fundraising initiatives was instrumental in securing the university's financial future.
In addition to strengthening the relationship between UCLA and the Los Angeles community, Young placed significant emphasis on public service.
