Hallelujah (1929) is a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical directed by King Vidor, and starring Daniel L. Haynes and the then unknown Nina Mae McKinney.
allelujah was King Vidor's first sound film, and combined sound recorded on location and sound recorded post-production in Hollywood.[1] King Vidor was nominated for a Best Director Oscar for the film.
In 2008, Hallelujah was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Hallelujah, Foxtrot (Youmans, Robin, Gray) – Orkiestra Barnabás Géczy, Homocord 1929 (Polish pressing; originally recorded in Berlin)
NOTE: Barnabás von Géczy (b. 1897 in Budapest; d. 1971 in Munich) Hungarian violinist and orchestra conductor who was one of the most famous European dance band conductors of the 1920s and 1930s . Géczy studied violin at the Budapest Academy of Music, and in 1919 he was concertmaster of the Budapest Opera. In 1922 he left Hungary for Norway, where he founded his first band with the German pianist Erich Kaschubek who also starred in Géczy’s later orchestras. In 1924 they went to Germany where Geczy’s band became resident orchestra of the Hotel Esplanade (until 1937) and recorded numerous records. In 1938 he was appointed professor. He continued his musical activity during the 2nd World War years, playing on the radio in Germany and performing for the German society in the occupied Prague. In 1945 he moved out to Munich, where he stayed until his death, as resident orchestra in the popular Café Luitpold.
Géczy was a virtuoso violinist and was called “the Paganini of the 5 o'clock tea". In his arrangements he moved the strings - more than other orchestra bosses this time – to the foreground. He waxed over 700 records for various companies in Berlin, mainly for Homocord, Parlophon, Telefunken and Electrola. The most successful record was the Puszta Fox, which was sold in more than million copies. Barnabas Geczy was also very popular in Poland. His dance records were re-pressed in a large number by Polish companies, including Syrena-Electro, Parlophon, Odeon or Homocord.

This is the tenth of nineteen Broadcast records by ‘The Original Havana Band’ with Ramon Newton as director, violinist and vocalist. Initially billed on the labels as ‘The Original Havana Band Late of the Savoy Hotel London’, they soon dropped or had been required to drop the Savoy Hotel reference.
Although reportedly brought together by Ramon Newton, the Original Havana Band line-up in Rust is not the former Savoy Havana Band complement. Even Newton had not been a SHB member since May 1926 when he became leader of the Orpheans after Debroy Somers’ departure. (He did, however, record as a vocalist with the SHB on HMV.) The OHB is more like another Harry Bidgood studio band for the Broadcast label. Rust lists Harry playing piano in the OHB.
In BLUE GRASS, Newton sings in his contralto-falsetto range (but not quite as badly as in CHARMAINE, elsewhere on this channel). To me, he seemed somehow trapped in the vocalist styles of the early 1920s. Perhaps he understood his audience.
Apologies to those with keen ears; these 8-inch Broadcasts are usually prone to a ‘swarf-whistle’ at around 4 kHz towards the end of the side; but the BLUE GRASS side of the record whistles in the 7 to 8 kHz region from quite early on. It migrates down to 4.4 kHz by the end of the side. Having elderly and acoustically traumatised hearing, I am blissfully unaware of it. I know it is there only because the FFT analysis shows it clear and prominent on the screen!

The1927 Hit Song HALLELUJAH about some randy sailors SCREWED UP IN TRANSLATION as a 1929 Paris Foxtrot Song on Disque Henry, a cheap label by Pathe. Vertical sapphire disc, and still an acoustic recording.
This record gives a good idea how an US Hit tune sounded, once it had been arranged for the peculiar Continental Jazz of the 1920s. Exotic savagery, plenty of percussion, but not a lot of smooth Jazz.
What the French really screwed up were the new lyrics:
From a Sailor's song about shooing Satan and the Blues away comes now this etherized song about Winter Cold and Love Divine, with some fairly disturbing imagery given the general tone of the song. And to imagine that this song was used for some close-body dancing in the dive joints of Montparnasse or Pigalle! Incroyable!
Funny how the singer sings the French Alleluia in the first refrain (1:20), and in the second refrain (2:30) does almost manage to pronounce the English Hallelujah.
The original, somewhat blasphemous, US Lyrics:

The HMV 31b was a follow on model to the 1928 HMV 28, the last open horn phonograph. With an 5b soundbox and an exponential horn, this machine is my favorite phonograph.
This machine has been made by HMV India in Dum-Dum, perhaps as late as the 1940s. It had an interesting history: Obviously used somewhere in the Indian desert (the was pink sand on the inside of the soundbox), the machine had been continually mended and repaired - no two screws seem to be identical. Ending up without the horn in a Southern California antiques store, it was completed again with a new elbow and a Victor horn of the correct shape. Now it again is able to delight us in its full glory.

Hallelujah! is a 1929 MGM musical directed by King Vidor, starring Daniel L. Haynes and the then unknown Nina Mae McKinney.
Filmed in Tennessee and Arkansas and chronicling the troubled quest of a sharecropper, Zeke Johnson (Haynes), and his relationship with the seductive Chick (McKinney), Hallelujah! was one of the first all-black films by a major studio. It was intended for a general audience and was considered so risky a venture by MGM that they required King Vidor to invest his own salary in the production. Vidor's vision was to attempt to present a relatively non-stereotyped view of African-American life.
Hallelujah! was King Vidor's first sound film, and combined sound recorded on location and sound recorded post-production in Hollywood. King Vidor was nominated for a Best Director Oscar for the film.
In 2008, Hallelujah! was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

All things tremble with happiness. The Gramophone ============== The HMV 31b was a follow on model to the 1928 HMV 28, the last open horn phonograph. With an 5b soundbox and an exponential horn, this machine is my favorite phonograph. This machine has been made by HMV India in Dum-Dum, perhaps as late as the 1940s. It had an interesting history: Obviously used somewhere in the Indian desert (the was pink sand on the inside of the soundbox), the machine had been continually mended and repaired - no two screws seem to be identical. Ending up without the horn in a Southern California antiques store, it was completed again with a new elbow and a Victor horn of the correct shape. Now it again is able to delight us in its full glory. The1927 Hit Song HALLELUJAH about some randy sailors SCREWED UP IN TRANSLATION as a 1929 Paris Foxtrot Song on Disque Henry, a cheap label by Pathe. Vertical sapphire disc, and still an acoustic recording. This record gives a good idea how an US Hit tune sounded, once it had been arranged for the peculiar Continental Jazz of the 1920s. Exotic savagery, plenty of percussion, but not a lot of smooth Jazz. What the French really screwed up were the new lyrics: From a Sailor's song about shooing Satan and the Blues away comes now this etherized song about Winter Cold and Love Divine, with some fairly disturbing imagery given the general tone of the song. And to imagine that this song was used for some close-body dancing in the dive joints of Montparnasse or Pigalle! Incroyable! Fun... -

First of all, I'm sorry this video is so long but I wanted to sing all the verses of it that I could find. Leonard Cohen (who wrote the song) said that he wished people would stop singing it but you might as well ask people to stop looking at the Mona Lisa! In its genre, this song is a masterpiece. I discovered Leonard Cohen back in the early 60's when a family friend gave my parents a copy of LOVE WHERE THE NIGHTS ARE LONG, a collection of the works of Cohen and his friend and mentor, the late, brilliant Irving Layton. NOTE: Barnabás von Géczy (b. 1897 in Budapest; d. 1971 in Munich) Hungarian violinist and orchestra conductor who was one of the most famous European dance band conductors of the 1920s and 1930s . Géczy studied violin at the Budapest Academy of Music, and in 1919 he was concertmaster of the Budapest Opera. In 1922 he left Hungary for Norway, where he founded his first band with the German pianist Erich Kaschubek who also starred in Géczy’s later orchestras. In 1924 they went to Germany where Geczy’s band became resident orchestra of the Hotel Esplanade (until 1937) and recorded numerous records. In 1938 he was appointed professor. He continued his musical activity during the 2nd World War years, playing on the radio in Germany and performing for the German society in the occupied Prague. In 1945 he moved out to Munich, where he stayed until his death, as resident orchestra in the popular Café Luitpold.
Géczy was a virtuoso violinist and was called “the Paganini of the 5 o'clock tea". In his arrangements he moved the strings - more than other orchestra bosses this time – to the foreground. He waxed over 700 records for various companies in Berlin, mainly for Homocord, Parlophon, Telefunken and Electrola. The most successful record was the Puszta Fox, which was sold in more than million copies. Barnabas Geczy was also very popular in Poland. His dance records were re-pressed in a large number by Polish companies, including Syrena-Electro, Parlophon, Odeon or Homocord.

This is the tenth of nineteen Broadcast records by ‘The Original Havana Band’ with Ramon Newton as director, violinist and vocalist. Initially billed on the labels as ‘The Original Havana Band Late of the Savoy Hotel London’, they soon dropped or had been required to drop the Savoy Hotel reference.
Although reportedly brought together by Ramon Newton, the Original Havana Band line-up in Rust is not the former Savoy Havana Band complement. Even Newton had not been a SHB member since May 1926 when he became leader of the Orpheans after Debroy Somers’ departure. (He did, however, record as a vocalist with the SHB on HMV.) The OHB is more like another Harry Bidgood studio band for the Broadcast label. Rust lists Harry playing piano in the OHB.
In BLUE GRASS, Newton sings in his contralto-falsetto range (but not quite as badly as in CHARMAINE, elsewhere on this channel). To me, he seemed somehow trapped in the vocalist styles of the early 1920s. Perhaps he understood his audience.
Apologies to those with keen ears; these 8-inch Broadcasts are usually prone to a ‘swarf-whistle’ at around 4 kHz towards the end of the side; but the BLUE GRASS side of the record whistles in the 7 to 8 kHz region from quite early on. It migrates down to 4.4 kHz by the end of the side. Having elderly and acoustically traumatised hearing, I am blissfully unaware of it. I know it is there only because the FFT analysis shows it clear and prominent on the screen!
Does anyone read these, I wonder.

This record gives a good idea how an US Hit tune sounded, once it had been arranged for the peculiar Continental Jazz of the 1920s. Exotic savagery, plenty of percussion, but not a lot of smooth Jazz.
What the French really screwed up were the new lyrics:
From a Sailor's song about shooing Satan and the Blues away comes now this etherized song about Winter Cold and Love Divine, with some fairly disturbing imagery given the general tone of the song. And to imagine that this song was used for some close-body dancing in the dive joints of Montparnasse or Pigalle! Incroyable!
Funny how the singer sings the French Alleluia in the first refrain (1:20), and in the second refrain (2:30) does almost manage to pronounce the English Hallelujah.

The Gramophone

The HMV 31b was a follow on model to the 1928 HMV 28, the last open horn phonograph. With an 5b soundbox and an exponential horn, this machine is my favorite phonograph.
This machine has been made by HMV India in Dum-Dum, perhaps as late as the 1940s. It had an interesting history: Obviously used somewhere in the Indian desert (the was pink sand on the inside of the soundbox), the machine had been continually mended and repaired - no two screws seem to be identical. Ending up without the horn in a Southern California antiques store, it was completed again with a new elbow and a Victor horn of the correct shape. Now it again is able to delight us in its full glory.

The Gramophone

The HMV 31b was a follow on model to the 1928 HMV 28, the last open horn phonograph. With an 5b soundbox and an exponential horn, this machine is my favorite phonograph.
This machine has been made by HMV India in Dum-Dum, perhaps as late as the 1940s. It had an interesting history: Obviously used somewhere in the Indian desert (the was pink sand on the inside of the soundbox), the machine had been continually mended and repaired - no two screws seem to be identical. Ending up without the horn in a Southern California antiques store, it was completed again with a new elbow and a Victor horn of the correct shape. Now it again is able to delight us in its full glory.

Gus Cannon (September 12, 1883 — October 15, 1979) was an American blues musician who helped to popularize jug bands (such as his own Cannon's Jug Stompers) in the 1920s and 1930s. There is doubt about his birth year; his tombstone gives the date as 1874
Born on a plantation at Red Banks, Cannon moved to Clarksdale, Mississippi, then the home of W. C. Handy, at the age of 12. Cannon's musical skills came without training; he taught himself to play using a banjo that he made from a frying pan and raccoon skin. He ran away from home at the age of fifteen and began his career entertaining at sawmills and levee and railroad camps in the Mississippi Delta around the turn of the century.
While in Clarksdale, Cannon was influenced by local musicians Jim Turner and Alex Lee. Turner's fiddle playing in W. C. Handys band so impressed Cannon that he decided to learn the fiddle himself. Lee, a guitarist, taught Cannon his first folk blues, "Po' Boy, Long Ways from Home", and showed him how to use a knife blade as a slide, a technique that Cannon adapted to his banjo playing.
Cannon left Clarksdale around 1907. He soon settled near Memphis and played in a jug band led by Jim Guffin. He began playing in Memphis with Jim Jackson. He met harmonica player Noah Lewis, who introduced him to a young guitar player named Ashley Thompson. Both Lewis and Thompson would eventually become members of Cannon's Jug Stompers. The three of them formed a band to play parties and dances. In 1914 Cannon began touring in medicine shows. He supported his family through a variety of jobs, including sharecropping, ditch digging, and yard work, but supplemented his income with music.
Cannon began recording, as "Banjo Joe", for Paramount Records in 1927. At that session he was backed up by Blind Blake. After the success of the Memphis Jug Band's first records, he quickly assembled a jug band featuring Noah Lewis and Ashley Thompson (later replaced by Elijah Avery).[3] Cannon's Jug Stompers first recorded at the Memphis Auditorium for the Victor label in January 1928. Hosea Woods joined the Jug Stompers in the late 1920s, playing guitar, banjo and kazoo, and also providing some vocals. Modern listeners can hear Cannon's Jug Stompers recording of "Big Railroad Blues" on the compilation album The Music Never Stopped: Roots of the Grateful Dead.
Although their last recordings were made in 1930, Cannon's Jug Stompers were one of Beale Street's most popular jug bands through the 1930s. A few songs Cannon recorded with Cannon's Jug Stompers are "Minglewood Blues", "Pig Ankle Strut", "Wolf River Blues", "Viola Lee Blues", "White House Station" and "Walk Right In", later made into a pop hit by The Rooftop Singers. By the end of the 1930s, Cannon had effectively retired, although he occasionally performed as a solo musician.

First of all, I'm sorry this video is so long but I wanted to sing all the verses of it that I could find. Leonard Cohen (who wrote the song) said that he wished people would stop singing it but you might as well ask people to stop looking at the Mona Lisa! In its genre, this song is a masterpiece.
I discovered Leonard Cohen back in the early 60's when a family friend gave my parents a copy of LOVE WHERE THE NIGHTS ARE LONG, a collection of the works of Cohen and his friend and mentor, the late, brilliant Irving Layton. I had never really appreciated poetry until I read that book. Perhaps what has always impressed me most about Leonard Cohen's work is his ability to be distant and objective about his subject while resting quietly in its heart.
There are two theremins in this video, Samuel Hoffman's 1929 RCA and the Moog MIDI Ethervox. I have never been able to sing and accurately play the theremin at the same time, so verse three (where I play the Hoffman RCA) is the only verse where I did not sing live. The MIDI theremin (which you see on verse five) is fairly easy to play while singing. Simple gestures of the arm trigger sounds from a separate MIDI module (in this case a Roland JV 2080).
The keyboard on this video is a Korg Triton Extreme (doubled with a Roland Fantom XR). The advantage of an electronic keyboard over an acoustic piano is that there is no leakage into the vocal mike when a singer is playing and singing at the same time. Nothing will ever replace a good Steinway but the latest generations of electronic keyboards are awesome!
The mike I used is a cordless Sennheiser that I have had for years. It was given to me by Sennheiser when they sponsored a tour in the 1980's and it works as well today as it did when I got it.
Here's a little bit of trivia you may not know about the RCA theremin in this video. According to Apollo astronaut Neil Armstrong's biographer, Andrew Smith, Armstrong actually took a recording of this theremin with him into space for the moon landing in 1969. The previous owner of this instrument, Dr. Samuel Hoffman, used it on his 1947 recording, MUSIC OUT OF THE MOON. Neil Armstrong liked the sound of it so much that he made a cassette tape of it from his personal record collection and took it with him to the moon.
Andrew Smith ends his book, MOONDUST, with the following words, ".....when I've thought of Apollo, I've thought of him [Neil Armstrong] and his little band drifting out there toward the secret Moon.....spilling theremin music out at the stars."

When I read of the Huntsmans’ purchase of The Salt Lake Tribune, I felt like breaking into the Hallelujah Chorus. Finally the knights in shining armor had appeared and Utah would be able to continue to have an independent voice, superb investigative reporting and a forum for a wide range of ideas, including those of progressives.
