About this album:
Silencio is a meditative collection of 20th-century works for string orchestra, including works by Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, and Vladimir Martynov. The disc is bookended with works by Pärt, whose Tabula Rasa opens the disc. The work was written for and dedicated to Kremer, violinist Tatjana Grindenko and conductor Eri Klas (all featured on this recording), who premiered it in 1977 in Estonia. It was recorded live for release on ECM later that year. Tabula Rasa is scored for string orchestra, solo violins and prepared piano.
Philip Glass's Company was originally composed for a Public Theater production of a play based on Samuel Beckett's short novel of the same name. Later it became Glass's String Quartet # 2 and received its first recording by Kronos Quartet, on their self-titled debut, in 1986. It is heard here in an adaptation for string orchestra.
The Russian composer Vladimir Martynov wrote "Come in!" for Kremer and Grindenko, who premiered the work in Leningrad in 1988. A six-movement work for two solo violins and string orchestra, it takes its title from the following text, written by the composer:
The staircase to Heaven is inside your heart; you enter through the door of your soul.
Our whole life is but an attempt to find this miraculous entrance.
All our deeds are but a timid knocking on this mysterious door
All our hopes are to hear a voice that would respond, 'Come In!'
Closing the disc is the world premiere recording of Arvo Pärt's Darf ich... (May I), recorded in Berlin last year.
Kremer founded the Kremerata Baltica, an orchestra of young musicians from the three Baltic States, in 1996. They first performed in Riga, Latvia in February 1997. Kremer had long sought to share his rich artistic experience with young musicians in his native Latvia and the Baltic region, and was prompted to form a more lasting relationship with the artists, as a way to give back to the community that fostered his own musical growth. The Kremerata Baltica is made up of musicians whose average age is 25 and who hail from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Kremer, who acts as the group's artistic director, said, in an interview for The New York Times, that it functions as "a musical democracy...open-minded, self-critical, a continuation of my musical spirit."
The Kremerata Baltica, who the Los Angeles Times calls, "...extraordinary young players...they animate everything their bows touch..." recently signed an exclusive, six-record agreement with Nonesuch Records, inaugurated earlier this year by the release of Eight Seasons. This reorchestration of Piazzolla's Cuatro estaciones porteñas, paired with the Vivaldi classic, brings with it a new way of listening to both works, and the possibility of discovering the connections they share.

Music student Melissa Venema plays Il Silenzio by trumpet composer Nini Rosso. It is an Neapolitan cavalry call from Italy (see p. 540 in the article "The Trumpet in Camp and Battle" from The Century Magazine, vol. 34, 1898 (very interesting article online).

It also shows how the U.S. call Tattoo (now to be played 15 minutes before Taps as a warning call), the longest U.S. call in the book, is actually a combination of the British and French calls for "lights out" with a distinctly American tag or coda at the end. It is interesting to note that this particular article does mention Taps (but not by name), a relatively new call in 1898, as it was supposedly composed by Union General Dan Butterfield one night during a lull in the fighting during the Civil War. Silencio is a progressive rock band from Columbus, Ohio, known for creating music of intricate complexity and difficulty.
The band was formed in 2001 by guitarist and principal songwriter Jamie Hafler with drummer Nathan Ward and keyboardist Anna Wuerth. Silencio's first show was in October 2001 at Bernie's Distillery in Columbus opening for the avant rock group Orthrelm.
Soon thereafter fourth band member Tony Belleau joined the band on bass, electronics, as well as lending his talents in the visual arts.
After independently releasing a self titled five song EP in 2002, garnering a local following opening for national acts Trans Am, Dälek, The Unicorns, and Dead Meadow, and performances at local art venues The Wexner Center For The Arts and BLD, a full length album entitled Dead Kings was released on The Mountain Collective For Independent Artists (MTNCIA) label in 2004. MTNCIA folded in 2006 with MTNCIA's catalog obsorbed by Handstand Records.
Following the exodus of two band members from their home town the band has been on hiatus since October 2006. Silencio has no present plans to record or to tour.

Édgar Alexánder Campos Mora Better known as Alex Campos (born September 10, 1976 in Bogotá, Colombia) is a Christian singer that is popular in Latin America and in Spanish speaking countries. In 2001 he founded his musical company, Misión Vida, to promote his ministry. He has been nominated for a Latin Grammy and for Premios Shock.
Alex Campos was born on September 10 on 1976 Bogotá. He is the elder brother of four sons and grew up on a dysfunctional home.
Since he was 12 years old, he visited a local Christian Church. At the age of 14, he joined his first group where he played the recorder. When Campos was 17, the group Misión Vida was formed.
He won the 2011 Latin Grammy Award for "Mejor Album Cristiano" "Best Christian Album"
On March 22, 2004, Campos married Natalia Rodríguez. They have two children, Juanita and Simon.
He has eight albums. His first was a live CD recorded in Bogotá, Colombia named Tiempo de La Cruz (Time of the Cross).
His second album was a studio record Al Taller del Maestro (To the Master's Work Shop). He made this album to dedicate it to God because Campos believes God healed his throat tumor.

Nelly Kim Furtado (born December 2, 1978) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, record producer and actress. Furtado first gained fame with her debut album, Whoa, Nelly!, and its single "I'm Like a Bird", which won a 2001 Juno Award for Single of the Year and a 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Her second studio album, Folklore, was released. It was less commercially successful in the US but produced three international singles: "Powerless (Say What You Want)", "Try", and "Força" (the theme of the 2004 European Football Championship). Her third studio album, Loose was her biggest success worldwide. It produced the number-one hits "Promiscuous", "Maneater", "Say It Right" and "All Good Things (Come to an End)". Out of Wim Winders documentary "Buena Vista Social Club". A view into the resurection of old forgotten amazing cuban musicians from the 30's 40's and 50's. Most of them found randomly through the streets of Havana. This Bolero called "Silencio" was composed by Puerto Rico's Rafafel Fernandez and features vocals by Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo. Wim Wenders filmed the recording session in Havana as well as the performance of the song in Amsterdam. As the camera dissolves seamlessly from studio to performance, we see Ibrahim Ferrer wiping a tear off Omara Portuondo's cheek, the most beautiful moment of the film, crystallizing the tragic beauty, not just of the this bolero, but also of the story behind The Buena Vista Social Club. As Omara Portuondo recalls "Ibrahim asked me to sing Silencio with him, and for me that was the highlight. It made me feel so happy to see him singing, and to see how he was moved. We had [sung] together many times in the past, and to find ourselves together again was a big thing. It was impossible to keep back the tears, and when Ibrahim got out his handkerchief, at that moment we looked at each other, and I can't describe what we felt. That was a magical moment. Everyone knows it. It was pure poetry, something spontaneous and natural. Unforgettable!" Lyrics included on the video (the portuguese ones came with the original take)

Out of Wim Winders documentary "Buena Vista Social Club". A view into the resurection of old forgotten amazing cuban musicians from the 30's 40's and 50's. Silencio is a meditative collection of 20th-century works for string orchestra, including works by Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, and Vladimir Martynov. The disc is bookended with works by Pärt, whose Tabula Rasa opens the disc. The work was written for and dedicated to Kremer, violinist Tatjana Grindenko and conductor Eri Klas (all featured on this recording), who premiered it in 1977 in Estonia. It was recorded live for release on ECM later that year. Tabula Rasa is scored for string orchestra, solo violins and prepared piano.
Philip Glass's Company was originally composed for a Public Theater production of a play based on Samuel Beckett's short novel of the same name. Later it became Glass's String Quartet # 2 and received its first recording by Kronos Quartet, on their self-titled debut, in 1986. It is heard here in an adaptation for string orchestra.
The Russian composer Vladimir Martynov wrote "Come in!" for Kremer and Grindenko, who premiered the work in Leningrad in 1988. A six-movement work for two solo violins and string orchestra, it takes its title from the following text, written by the composer:
The staircase to Heaven is inside your heart; you enter through the door of your soul.
Our whole life is but an attempt to find this miraculous entrance.
All our deeds are but a timid knocking on this mysterious door
All our hopes are to hear a voice that would respond, 'Come In!'
Closing the disc is the world premiere recording of Arvo Pärt's Darf ich... (May I), recorded in Berlin last year.
Kremer founded the Kremerata Baltica, an orchestra of young musicians from the three Baltic States, in 1996. They first performed in Riga, Latvia in February 1997. Kremer had long sought to share his rich artistic experience with young musicians in his native Latvia and the Baltic region, and was prompted to form a more lasting relationship with the artists, as a way to give back to the community that fostered his own musical growth. The Kremerata Baltica is made up of musicians whose average age is 25 and who hail from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Kremer, who acts as the group's artistic director, said, in an interview for The New York Times, that it functions as "a musical democracy...open-minded, self-critical, a continuation of my musical spirit."
The Kremerata Baltica, who the Los Angeles Times calls, "...extraordinary young players...they animate everything their bows touch..." recently signed an exclusive, six-record agreement with Nonesuch Records, inaugurated earlier this year by the release of Eight Seasons. This reorchestration of Piazzolla's Cuatro estaciones porteñas, paired with the Vivaldi classic, brings with it a new way of listening to both works, and the possibility of discovering the connections they share.

Out of Wim Winders documentary "Buena Vista Social Club". A view into the resurection of old forgotten amazing cuban musicians from the 30's 40's and 50's. Most of them found randomly through the streets of Havana.
This Bolero called "Silencio" was composed by Puerto Rico's Rafafel Fernandez and features vocals by Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo. Wim Wenders filmed the recording session in Havana as well as the performance of the song in Amsterdam. As the camera dissolves seamlessly from studio to performance, we see Ibrahim Ferrer wiping a tear off Omara Portuondo's cheek, the most beautiful moment of the film, crystallizing the tragic beauty, not just of the this bolero, but also of the story behind The Buena Vista Social Club.
As Omara Portuondo recalls "Ibrahim asked me to sing Silencio with him, and for me that was the highlight. It made me feel so happy to see him singing, and to see how he was moved. We had [sung] together many times in the past, and to find ourselves together again was a big thing. It was impossible to keep back the tears, and when Ibrahim got out his handkerchief, at that moment we looked at each other, and I can't describe what we felt. That was a magical moment. Everyone knows it. It was pure poetry, something spontaneous and natural. Unforgettable!"
