Derek Haas recommends getting your material into the right hands (and landing Brad Pitt).
Question: What's the trick to breaking into Hollywood?
Derek Haas: A lot of Hollywood is just getting material into people's hands that can do something with it. I think when you know you have something good is when every single person that reads it wants to be a part of it. What happened was Michael was working, he was Robert Rodriguez's assistant on this movie, The Faculty when we finished and he didn't want to give the script to Robert. He was practically living with him while they were editing the movie and he didn't want to be just that guy. So he ended up giving it to his boss on the movie which was his post-production supervisor. She loved it and wanted to be a part of it. She gave it to a producer's assistant. The producer's assistant gave it to this producer. The producer called me in Atlanta when I had no idea what was going on and said, "how would you guys feel about Brad Pitt being the lead", and of course, my heart's just like, "what?", and in retrospect you can't believe how impossible this chain of events is but a week later Brad Pitt was attached to the movie and that's how it sold. That's my advice, if you can get Brad Pitt attached to your movie, then it'll sell.e were about four years out of school at this point and again, I'd been working in advertising and Michael had started cutting movies and we just said instruction be damned. Let's break the rules, let's not adhere to this whole, what am I trying to say? With that script, we just both said, rules be damned. You always hear write what you know and I grew up in the suburbs and Michael, too, and write what you know works if your dad is in the CIA or your mom's a mafia boss or something but for us we said, "Screw write what you know, write what you think is cool." Hopefully what we think is cool is what the rest of the audiences will think is cool so we broke the form, we wrote camera moves in which is a big no-no when you're learning to write scripts. We zigged every time we thought we would zag and we zagged every time we thought we would zig. It was a quirky thing, the timing was right, this was a few years after Pulp Fiction when studios were seeking those kind of down and dirty crime centered, quirky scripts so everything just hit at the right time. That advice of know all of the rules so that you can break them, is really what helped us.

Derek Haas
Derek Haas (born June 30, 1970) is an American writer and producer.
Life and career
Derek Haas attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he earned both his B.A. and M.A. in English Literature. He lives in Los Angeles, and has made a name as a screenwriter and co-author of several successful Hollywood films. In 2008 he published his novel The Silver Bear about the young contract killer Columbus. The sequel Columbus was released in 2009, and in 2011, Dark Men was published to complete the Silver Bear trilogy. His fourth novel, The Right Hand, was released in 2012. Haas was the editor of popcornfiction.com, where he published short stories by different authors. One of his own works, "Shake," was sold to Bruckheimer Films. Popcornfiction.com stopped publishing new stories in 2013 after Haas became too busy with television. Haas created and executive produces the NBC drama Chicago Fire, along with his writing partner Michael Brandt. Brandt and Haas also developed and executive produce Chicago P.D., a spin-off of Chicago Fire. Chicago Med, the second spin off of Chicago Fire premieres in November 2015.

Michael Brandt
Michael Brandt (born October 1, 1968) is an American writer and director.
Life and career
Brandt was born in Madison, Wisconsin and raised in Overland Park, Kansas in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Brandt is an alumnus of Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where as an undergrad he earned a BBA and in graduate school earned Master of Arts in Communication Studies, with a concentration in Film. His Master’s Thesis focused on digital nonlinear editing and the effects of the tool on the final film product. While studying at Baylor, Brandt met frequent collaborator Derek Haas. In the late 1990s, Brandt and Haas began collaborating on screenplays long distance, while Haas lived and worked in Atlanta.
They optioned their first spec script, The Courier, in 1999 while Brandt was working as an assistant editor for Robert Rodriguez on the set of The Faculty in Austin, Texas. In the director’s commentary on the Spy Kids DVD, Rodriguez shared that he was impressed that Brandt never revealed he had written a script that had Hollywood interest during his time on set, not wanting to muddy the waters of his working relationship with Rodriguez.

Derek is a male name. It is the English language short form of Dederik, the Low German form of the name Theodoric. Theodoric is an old Germanic name with an original meaning of "people-ruler".

History

A Derek van Keppel, lord of Verwoelde, died in 1495 and was succeeded by his eldest son, also called Derek van Keppel. A later Derek van Keppel died in 1646, succeeded by Asewolt van Keppel, the father of Arnold van Keppel, who in 1688 was created Earl of Albemarle in the Peerage of England.

Brad Pitt
William Bradley "Brad" Pitt (born December 18, 1963) is an American actor and producer. He has received a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and three Academy Award nominations in acting categories, and received three further Academy Award nominations, winning one, as producer under his own company Plan B Entertainment.
Pitt first gained recognition as a cowboy hitchhiker in the road movie Thelma & Louise (1991). His first leading roles in big-budget productions came with the dramas A River Runs Through It (1992) and Legends of the Fall (1994), and Interview with the Vampire (1994). I think when you know you have something good is when every single person that reads it wants to be a part of it. What happened was Michael was working, he was Robert Rodriguez's assistant on this movie, The Faculty when we finished and he didn't want to give the script to Robert. He was practically living with him while they were editing the movie and he didn't want to be just that guy. So he ended up giving it to his boss on the movie which was his post-production supervisor. She loved it and wanted to be a part of it. She gave it to a producer's assistant. The producer's assistant gave it to this producer. The producer called me in Atlanta when I had no idea what was going on and said, "how would you guys feel about Brad Pitt being the lead", and of course, my heart's just like, "what?", and in retrospect you can't believe how impossible this chain of events is but a week later Brad Pitt was attached to the movie and that's how it sold. That's my advice, if you can get Brad Pitt attached to your movie, then it'll sell.e were about four years out of school at this point and again, I'd been working in advertising and Michael had started cutting movies and we just said instruction be damned. Let's break the rules, let's not adhere to this whole, what am I trying to say? With that script, we just both said, rules be damned. You always hear write what you know and I grew up in the suburbs and Michael, too, and write what you know works if your dad is in the CIA or your mom's a mafia boss or something but for us we said, "Screw write what you know, write what you think is cool." Hopefully what we think is cool is what the rest of the audiences will think is cool so we broke the form, we wrote camera moves in which is a big no-no when you're learning to write scripts. We zigged every time we thought we would zag and we zagged every time we thought we would zig. It was a quirky thing, the timing was right, this was a few years after Pulp Fiction when studios were seeking those kind of down and dirty crime centered, quirky scripts so everything just hit at the right time. That advice of know all of the rules so that you can break them, is really what helped us.

The firehouse also includes Battalion Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker, “Oz”), a fireman’s fireman who recently welcomed a newborn son with his wife, Donna (Melissa Ponzio, “Teen Wolf”). As chief of the firehouse, it’s Boden’s job to keep everything in line and running smoothly between truck and squad. Paramedic turned tough-as-nails firefighter Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund, “The Good Wife”) returns alongside Paramedic Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer, “Beyond the Mask”) and seasoned veteran Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg, “Sex and the City”). 25-year-old Wes (James McAvoy) was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut.
Until he met a woman named Fox (Angelina Jolie).
After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad's death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself.

Question: What's the trick to breaking into Hollywood?
Derek Haas: A lot of Hollywood is just getting material into people's hands that can do something with it. I think when you know you have something good is when every single person that reads it wants to be a part of it. What happened was Michael was working, he was Robert Rodriguez's assistant on this movie, The Faculty when we finished and he didn't want to give the script to Robert. He was practically living with him while they were editing the movie and he didn't want to be just that guy. So he ended up giving it to his boss on the movie which was his post-production supervisor. She loved it and wanted to be a part of it. She gave it to a producer's assistant. The producer's assistant gave it to this producer. The producer called me in Atlanta when I had no idea what was going on and said, "how would you guys feel about Brad Pitt being the lead", and of course, my heart's just like, "what?", and in retrospect you can't believe how impossible this chain of events is but a week later Brad Pitt was attached to the movie and that's how it sold. That's my advice, if you can get Brad Pitt attached to your movie, then it'll sell.e were about four years out of school at this point and again, I'd been working in advertising and Michael had started cutting movies and we just said instruction be damned. Let's break the rules, let's not adhere to this whole, what am I trying to say? With that script, we just both said, rules be damned. You always hear write what you know and I grew up in the suburbs and Michael, too, and write what you know works if your dad is in the CIA or your mom's a mafia boss or something but for us we said, "Screw write what you know, write what you think is cool." Hopefully what we think is cool is what the rest of the audiences will think is cool so we broke the form, we wrote camera moves in which is a big no-no when you're learning to write scripts. We zigged every time we thought we would zag and we zagged every time we thought we would zig. It was a quirky thing, the timing was right, this was a few years after Pulp Fiction when studios were seeking those kind of down and dirty crime centered, quirky scripts so everything just hit at the right time. That advice of know all of the rules so that you can break them, is really what helped us.
