Imitation pearls are man-made objects (often beads) that are designed to resemble real pearls. A variety of methods are used to create imitation pearls from starting materials that include glass, plastic, and actual mollusc shell. Some beads are coated with a pearlescent substance in order to imitate the natural iridescence of nacre or mother of pearl. Varieties of imitation pearls include:
Imitation (from Latin imitatio, "a copying, imitation") is an advanced behavior whereby an individual observes and replicates another's behavior. Imitation is also a form of social learning that leads to the "development of traditions, and ultimately our culture. It allows for the transfer of information (behaviours, customs, etc.) between individuals and down generations without the need for genetic inheritance." The word imitation can be applied in many contexts, ranging from animal training to international politics.
In anthropology, some theories hold that all cultures imitate ideas from one of a few original cultures or several cultures whose influence overlaps geographically. Evolutionary diffusion theory holds that cultures influence one another, but that similar ideas can be developed in isolation.
Scholars as well as popular authors have argued that the role of imitation in humans is unique among animals. Psychologist Kenneth Kaye showed that infants' ability to match the sounds or gestures of an adult depends on an interactive process of turn-taking over many successive trials, in which adults' instinctive behavior plays as great a role as that of the infant. These writers assume that evolution would have selected imitative abilities as fit because those who were good at it had a wider arsenal of learned behavior at their disposal, including tool-making and language.
A pearl is a hard object produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusc. Just like the shell of a clam, a pearl is composed of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but many other shapes (baroque pearls) occur. The finest quality natural pearls have been highly valued as gemstones and objects of beauty for many centuries. Because of this, pearl has become a metaphor for something rare, fine, admirable and valuable.
The most valuable pearls occur spontaneously in the wild, but are extremely rare. These wild pearls are referred to as natural pearls. Cultured or farmed pearls from pearl oysters and freshwater mussels make up the majority of those currently sold. Imitation pearls are also widely sold in inexpensive jewelry, but the quality of their iridescence is usually very poor and is easily distinguished from that of genuine pearls. Pearls have been harvested and cultivated primarily for use in jewelry, but in the past were also used to adorn clothing. They have also been crushed and used in cosmetics, medicines and paint formulations.
What are the signs pearls you are about to buy are fake? Learn to distinguish between fake and real pearls - as part of the Wedding series by GeoBeats. Real pearls have a finger print like surface ridges in them. If you look very closely at them, even under a magnifying glass, you will notice these surface ridges and these specific qualities to each pearl. Whereas a fake pearl all of them look identical and they have smooth surface as they look the same. The second main thing is to look at the overtone color. Just like the choir prone necklace, that I am wearing right now, all of the pearls have an overtone color that is extremely beautiful and lustrous. Whereas fake pearls have sort of a dull milky sort of color. The next thing that you would want to know is that real pearls a...

The 3 tests are: body heat test, Visit the Cortez Pearl Blog (perlas.com.mx/blog) or my Personal Blog (www.douglasmclaurin.org.mx/blog) for more information.
This test takes 5 secs. and will tell you if you have real or fake/imitation pearls. If you have a set of pearls and are unsure if they are real or not you, you can perform the "tooth test". To perform the tooth test, gently rub the pearls across the front of you teeth. If you feel a grittiness, almost like sandpaper -- you have real pearls. If it feels smooth like glass or plastic, they're fake pearls. *note - this doesn't tell you if the pearls have value. They could be low quality freshwater pearls worth a few dollars. Or they could be high value saltwater pearls. Visit http://www.pearlsofjoy.com to see the range of pearls and values available.
