Ramsey Emmanuel Lewis, Jr. (born May 27, 1935) is an American jazz composer, pianist and radio personality. Ramsey Lewis has recorded over 80 albums and has received seven gold records and three Grammy Awards so far in his career.
Ramsey Lewis was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Ramsey Lewis, Sr. and Pauline Lewis. Lewis began taking piano lessons at the age of four. At 15 he joined his first jazz band, the Cleffs. The seven-piece group provided Lewis his first involvement with jazz; he would later join Cleffs drummer Isaac "Red" Holt and bassist Eldee Young to form the Ramsey Lewis Trio.
The trio started as primarily a jazz unit and released their first album, Ramsey Lewis and the Gentlemen of Swing, in 1956. Following their 1965 hit "The In Crowd" (the single reached No. 5 on the pop charts, and the album No. 2) they concentrated more on pop material. Young and Holt left in 1966 to form Young-Holt Unlimited and were replaced by Cleveland Eaton and Maurice White. White left to form Earth, Wind & Fire and was replaced by Morris Jennings in 1970. Later, Frankie Donaldson and Bill Dickens replaced Jennings and Eaton; Felton Crews also appeared on many 1980's releases.
"The ‘In’ Crowd" is a 1964song written by Billy Page and arranged by his brother Gene that was originally performed by Dobie Gray on his album Dobie Gray Sings for 'In' Crowders That 'Go Go'. Gray's powerful Motown-like version, complete with brass section, reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 on 20 February 1965 and #25 in the UK in 1965. Gray's Shindig! performance of the song aired on 10 March 1965.
The Ramsey Lewis Trio recorded an instrumental version of the tune later that same year. Their jazzy take, recorded live at Bohemian Caverns, a Washington, D.C. night club, reached #5 on the Hot 100 on 9 October 1965 and was used for many years as background music of Jimmy Savile's Savile's Travels and Jimmy Savile's Old Record Club on BBC Radio 1.
Bryan Ferry covered this song on his 1974 album Another Time, Another Place and released it as a single which reached #13 in the UK.
Harry James recorded a version on his 1966 album The Ballads And The Beat! (Dot DLP 3669 and DLP 25669).
Dobie Gray (born Lawrence Darrow Brown; July 26, 1940 – December 6, 2011) was an American singer and songwriter, whose musical career spanned soul, country, pop, and musical theater. His hit records included "The 'In' Crowd" in 1965 and "Drift Away", which was one of the biggest hits of 1973, sold over one million copies, and remains a staple of radio airplay.
He was born near Houston, Texas, by his own account in Simonton although some sources suggest the nearby town of Brookshire. His birth name was most likely Lawrence Darrow Brown, who is listed in Fort Bend County birth records as being born in 1940 to Jane P. Spencel and Jethro Clifton Brown. Other sources suggest he may have been born Leonard Victor Ainsworth, a name he used on some early recordings.
His family sharecropped. He discovered gospel music through his grandfather, a Baptist minister. In the early 1960s he moved to Los Angeles, intending to pursue an acting career while also singing to make money. He recorded for several local labels under the names Leonard Ainsworth, Larry Curtis, and Larry Dennis, before Sonny Bono directed him toward the small independent Stripe Records. They suggested that he record under the name "Dobie Gray", an allusion to the then-popular sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.
Gregory Porter (born November 4, 1971) is an American jazz vocalist, songwriter and actor. Porter won the 2014 Grammy for best jazz vocal album, Liquid Spirit.
Gregory Porter was born in Sacramento and was raised in Bakersfield, California, where his mother was a minister. A 1989 graduate of Highland High School, he received a full-ride athletic scholarship to San Diego State University (SDSU Aztecs). A shoulder injury during his junior year of high school restricted his football career.
Porter moved to the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn in 2004, along with his brother Lloyd. He worked as a chef at Lloyd's restaurant Bread-Stuy (now defunct), where he also performed. Porter performed at other neighborhood venues including Sista's Place and Solomon's Porch, and moved on to Harlem club St. Nick's Pub, where he maintained a weekly residency. Out of this residency evolved what would become Porter's touring band.
Porter released two albums on the Motéma label, 2010's Water and 2012's Be Good, before signing with Blue Note Records (under Universal Music Group) on May 17, 2013. His third album, Liquid Spirit, was released on September 2, 2013, in Europe and on September 17, 2013, in the US. The album was produced by Brian Bacchus. The album won the 2014 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

Best known for his 1973 smash "Drift Away," Dobie Gray was a versatile vocalist who could handle soul, country, and pop, not to mention musical theater. Gray's origins are somewhat ill-defined; different sources alternately list his birth name as Leonard Victor Ainsworth or Laurence Darrow Brown, and his Texas birthplace as Brookshire or Simonton. His likely birth date is July 26, 1940 (though some sources list 1942 or 1943). Whatever the case, Gray grew up in a family of sharecroppers, and discovered gospel music through his grandfather, a Baptist minister. He also soaked up the R&B; and country music of his surroundings, and in the early '60s he moved to Los Angeles to seek his fortune. Before adopting the name Dobie Gray, he recorded several singles under the names Leonard Ainsworth, L...

I'm in with the in crowd
(Do-do-do)
I go where the in crowd goes
(Do-do-do)
I'm in with the in crowd
(Do-do-do)
And I know what the in crowd knows
(Da-da-da-da)
Anytime of the year
Don't you hear
(Havin' a ball)
Dressin' fine, makin' time
We breeze up an down the street
We get respect
From the people we meet
They make way day or night
They know the in crowd is out of sight
I'm in with the in crowd
(Do-do-do)
I know every latest dance
(Do-do-do)
When you're in with the in crowd
(Do-do-do)
It's easy to find romance
(Get down)
At a spot where the beats really hot
(Where we are bound)
If it's square, we ain't there
We make every minute count, yeah!
Our share is always the biggest amount
Other guys imitate us
But the originals still the greatest
Yeah! (Yeah!)
Got our own way a walkin'
We got our own way of talkin', yeah!
(short instrumental)
(Gonna have fun)
Anytime of the year, don't you hear
(Gonna have fun)
Spendin' cash, talkin' trash
Girl, I'll show you a real good time
Come on with me and leave your troubles behind
I don't care where you've been
You ain't been no where
'Till you've been in
With the in crowd, yeah!
Ooh! the in crowd
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
We got our own way a walkin', yeah!
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
Oh, we got our own way a talkin'
FADES-
In the in crowd.
