We have been told that off-shore companies are used for a variety of legitimate business reasons. Does the community benefit arising from corporations hiding their ownership/identity outweigh the cost suffered from loss of government revenue? Think of the analogy with drivers licenses. If you drive on Australian roads, you must disclose your identity by way of a licence... even though there are many advantages business could gain from hiding their identity on Australian roads. My bias is that businesses operating in Australia should (in all cases) be required to disclose their ownership/identity.
