Vienne (French pronunciation: [vjɛn]) is the northernmost département of the Poitou-Charentes region of France, named after the river Vienne.
Vienne is one of the original 83 departments, established on March 4, 1790 during the French Revolution. It was created from parts of the former provinces of Poitou, Touraine, and Berry. The original Acadians who settled in Nova Scotia and what is today other maritime provinces of Canada, left Vienne for North America after 1604.
Goat cheese making is an important industry of Vienne.
The most famous tourist sites include the Futuroscope theme park, Poitiers (city of Art and History), the Abbey Church of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe, a UNESCO world heritage site, the animal parks of Monkey's Valley in Romagne & the Crocodile Planet in Civaux.

À voir l’impétueux petit torrent de montagne, rien ne laisse soupçonner que le Danube deviendra le deuxième plus long fleuve d’Europe. De la Forêt-Noire à la capitale autrichienne, nous suivrons ses mille premiers kilomètres.
Il faut au Danube plusieurs centaines de kilomètres avant de devenir navigable. Première étape : Ulm. Cette ville a bâti sa fortune sur des bateaux de transport spécialement conçus pour le peu de profondeur du fleuve. Nous montons à bord de l’une de ces « boîtes », comme on les appelait. Des bateaux à usage unique, que les « Amis du Danube » ont même reconstitués. Partout dans la vieille ville, se lisent encore les traces de ces métiers du fleuve.
Le Danube ne devient navigable aux gros navires qu’un peu avant Ratisbonne. Miraculeusement épargnée par les bombardements de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Ratisbonne est aujourd’hui inscrite sur la liste du patrimoine mondial. Catherine Hummel, la présidente de l’association franco-allemande, nous fait découvrir sa ville, que la crue du Danube ampute parfois de ses îles. Sous le soleil, les rives se transforment en plages et l’Italie s’invite aussi dans les maisons patriciennes qui font la richesse de la ville. Ratisbonne a aussi été le siège du pouvoir du Saint Empire Romain Germanique, ébauche d’un « parlement » historique.
En amont de Ratisbonne, comme en aval, deux monuments étonnants surplombent le Danube : deux édifices voulus par Louis Ier de Bavière, l’un pour célébrer… les défaites de Napoléon, l’autre, temple grec insolite sur la rive du fleuve, est un panthéon de la culture germanique. Beaucoup d’anciens chemins de halage sont aujourd’hui des pistes cyclables. Et les cyclotouristes sont nombreux à découvrir le fleuve par cette méthode douce.
La vallée de la Wachau est une porte d’entrée célèbre en Autriche, pour sa production viticole. Un terroir intimement lié au Danube, comme nous l’explique Heinz Frischengruber, œnologue de la vallée. Une vallée qui fête son solstice d’été sur le fleuve. Le capitaine Schin est au moins autant marié au fleuve qu’à son épouse, et ne compte plus les heures passées sur le Danube. Un Danube qui a permis la construction de merveilles comme l’abbaye de Melk, qui fut un phare de culture au Moyen Âge. C’est elle qui inspira « Le Nom de la rose ».
Et si Vienne ne s’est pas bâtie sur son fleuve, Alexandre et son groupe nous en font découvrir toute la vitalité.

Linz is the capital of Upper Austria and is a dynamic industrial city with an old town that has a long history. It is the third largest city in Austria and is located on both banks of the Danube with several connecting bridges. Salzburg is a city of bishops and of music and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Austria as well as being the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The Grossglockner High Alps Road travels through one of the greatest natural landscapes in the world, the Hohe Tauern National Park, a remarkable mountain world in which nature is at its most glorious. Unser Rundgang beginnt bei der Staatsoper. Aus dem Staatsopernorchester gehen die Wiener Philharmoniker hervor, deren Neujahrskonzert am 1. Januar aus dem gegenüber liegenden Musikvereinshaus weltweit übertragen wird. Vorbei am Hotel Sacher und der Albertina, das renommierteste Kunstmuseum für graphische Kunst, erreichen wir den Heldenplatz mit den Reiterstandbildern Prinz Eugens und Erzherzogs Karl.
Im inneren Burghof findet man die Statue von Kaiser Franz I. dargestellt als Imperator Augustus. Auch die Kaiserkrone ist nicht zu übersehen.
Durch das Schweizer Tor gelangt man in den ältesten Teil der Burg, den Schweizer Hof. Hier sollte man auf jeden Fall auch die Schatzkammer besuchen, die neben den Reichinsignien des Heiligen Römischen Reichs deutscher Nation auch die unveräußerlichen Erbstücke des Hauses Habsburg zeigt.
Durch das Michaelertor verlassen wir die Hofburg und streifen die von Touristen und Einheimischen stark bevölkerte Fußgängerzone.
Im Leopoldinischen Trakt der Hofburg am Ballhausplatz befinden sind heute die Amtsräume des Bundespräsidenten. Im gegenüber liegenden Gebäude, wo einst der Wiener Kongress tagte, liegen die Amtsräume des Bundeskanzlers.
Vom Burgtheater, einem der renommiertesten Theater der Welt, gelangt man in den Volksgarten mit dem 1819 errichteten Theseustempel.
Über den Graben, eine der exklusivsten Straßen der Stadt, erreicht man den Stephansplatz. Ursprünglich befand sich hier der Graben vor dem römischen Kastell, der im Mittelalter der Graben vor der Stadtmauer wurde. In einer der Seitengassen befindet sich das Café Hawelka, berühmtestes Künstlercafé Wiens.
Der Stephansdom ist das Wahrzeichen von Wien. In lebhaftem architektonischem Kontrast zum Stephansdom steht die Glasfassade des Haashauses.

Our tour begins at the State Opera. The members of the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra are elected from of the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera. Their famous Vienna New Year's Concert, taking place January 1, is broadcasted worldwide from the house of the Viennese Music Association (Musikvereinshaus). Past the Hotel Sacher and the Albertina -the most renowned art museum of graphic arts - we reach the Heroes Square -Heldenplatz - with the equestrian statues of Prince Eugene and Archduke Charles.
In the inner yard of the Hofburg Palace you will find the statue of Emperor Franz I representing Emperor Augustus. The imperial crown cannot be overlooked.
The Swiss gateway leads into the oldest section of the castle - the Swiss Court. Here you should definitely visit the Treasury. Among other interesting objects, the Imperial Insignia of the Holy Roman Empire and the inalienable heirloom of the House of Habsburg are shown.
Through the Michaelertor -- St. Michael`s Gate - we leave the Hofburg Palace and touch the pedestrian precinct crowded by tourists and locals.
Today the Austrian Federal Chancellery is located in the Leopold Wing of the Hofburg Palace at the Ballhausplatz . In the opposite building, where the Congress of Vienna met once, are the offices of the Chancellor.
From the Imperial Court Theatre (Burgtheater), one of the most important German language theaters in the world, one arrives at the folks' park (Volksgarten) built in 1819 with the Theseustemple set up the 1819.
Across the trench (Graben), one of the most exclusive streets of the city, you reach the Stephansplatz. It was formerly the trench in front of the Roman fort, which became the ditch in front of the city wall in the Middle Ages. In one of the side streets you will find the Café Hawelka - Vienna's most famous artists' café.
The St. Stephen's Cathedral is the landmark of Vienna. The glass facade of the Haas house is in a lively architectural contrast to the St. Stephens cathedral.

Young fashion designers and offbeat stores can be found in many side streets in the area -- and with a bit of luck you can pick up a unique piece at a good price. Vienna's most exclusive shopping district is found right in the historic city centre. The most sought-after Austrian and international designers are found along the pedestrian area from the State Opera to St Stephen's Square and the Imperial Hofburg Palace. Here you can combine sightseeing with a unique shopping experience.
One of the most familiar Austrian brands is of course Svarkovski. The perk of shopping here is the excellent selection at a great price. There are huge sales in svarkovski several times a year so if you time your visit right, you could do what I did and stock up on lots of Christmas and birthday presents.

Having worked for many years in the publishing industry selling other travel writers' books, in 2003 Duncan J. D. Smith F.R.G.S. decided to start writing and illustrating his own. As a self-styled 'Urban Explorer', travel writer, historian and photographer, he has embarked on a lifetime's adventure, traveling off the beaten track in search of the world's hidden corners and curious locations. Duncan has so far traversed three continents in search of unusual places and people, from the wartime bunkers of Berlin and the Baroque gardens of Prague to the souks of Damascus and the rock-cut churches of Ethiopia. His European findings are being published in a ground breaking series of guidebooks - the 'Only in...' guides - designed specifically for the purpose. Volumes on Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and Cologne have been published, and a volume on Zürich is in preparation in 2011. Born in Sheffield, England in 1960 Duncan ran his own private museum from the age of ten before going on to read Ancient History and Archaeology at Birmingham University. Having worked for many years in the publishing industry selling other travel writers' books, in 2003 Duncan J. D. Smith F.R.G.S. decided to start writing and illustrating his own. As a self-styled 'Urban Explorer', travel writer, historian and photographer, he has embarked on a lifetime's adventure, traveling off the beaten track in search of the world's hidden corners and curious locations. Duncan has so far traversed three continents in search of unusual places and people, from the wartime bunkers of Berlin and the Baroque gardens of Prague to the souks of Damascus and the rock-cut churches of Ethiopia. His European findings are being published in a ground breaking series of guidebooks - the 'Only in...' guides - designed specifically for the purpose. Volumes on Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and Cologne have been published, and a volume on Zürich is in preparation in 2011. The series has garnered considerable press acclaim, with sales to date in excess of 80,000 units. Born in Sheffield, England in 1960 Duncan ran his own private museum from the age of ten before going on to read Ancient History and Archaeology at Birmingham University. Together with his father Trevor, he co-wrote and illustrated four highly successful books on the curiosities of Sheffield and Yorkshire, and was the author of the best-selling topographical book Yorkshire: A Portrait in Colour. Still a passionate collector he now tries to restrict his habit to vintage travel books, whilst also enjoying gardening, natural history, and music. Duncan divides his time between England and Central Europe.
