Thousands of children line the streets of Madrid to receive sweets and presents thrown to them from floats by actors dressed as the Three Wise Men during the traditional Epiphany parade
Thousands of children lined the streets of the Spanish capital on Monday night to see the Three Kings or Magi parade down the streets bearing gifts in an annual tradition.
The colourful parade is organised to honour the "Magi from the east" – Melchor, Gaspar and Balthasar – who are mentioned in the gospel of Saint Matthew as following a star to Bethlehem to give gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newly born Jesus Christ.
Their arrival is celebrated by Christians on January 6, called Epiphany.
People dressed as fantasy figures on the floats hurled sweets down to the children, who cheered the ornately decorated floats.
The floats were accompanied by clowns, jugglers and marching bands.
Despite the influence of Father Christmas in a Catholic but increasing secular Spain, the tradition of receiving presents on the 6th of January continues.
Children across the country put out shoes hoping for sweets but – if they had been behaving badly – the shoes could be filled with coal.

His Grace Bishop Youssef celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany at St. Athanasius Coptic Orthodox Church in Pensacola, FL. His Grace explains that during this feast, we celebrate the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ. Why was the Lord Jesus Christ baptized? This is answered for us in the following verse:
"John answered them, saying, I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know. It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, `After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.' I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water. And John bore witness, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, `Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God" (John 1:26-34).

Copy of Theophany (Epiphany) on river Jordan
The feast is called Theophany because at the baptism of Christ the Holy Trinity appeared clearly to mankind for the first time -- the Father's voice is heard from Heaven, the Son of God is incarnate and standing physically in the Jordan, and the Holy Spirit descends on Him in the form of a dove. This feast is also sometimes referred to as Epiphany by English-speaking Orthodox Christians, but that

Epiphany (Theophany) is one of the greatest feasts of the Orthodox Church. It's celebrated on the 6th of January (19th according to the old calendar). It's commemoration of the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ in Jordan river and the revelation of the Holy Trinity.
In this video troparion (short hymn presenting the essence of the feast/ saint day) is chanted by various choirs in: English (Byzantine chant), Church Slavonic (Byzantine chant), Greek, Arabic, Church Slavonic (Russian chant), Romanian, Spanish, Ukrainian, Albanian, Church Slavonic (Serbian chant), Georgian, French, Japanese, Swahili (Kiswahili; pictures also from Ethiopia), Arabic (quick melody), Indonesian, Church Slavonic (modern Bulgarian chant, Polish subtitles), English (modern arrangement).
Most of them are with subtitles.
When Thou, O Lord, wast baptized in the Jordan the worship of the Trinity was made manifest! For the voice of the Father bare witness to Thee, calling Thee his Beloved Son. And the Spirit, in the form of a dove, confirmed the truthfulness of his Word. O Christ our God, who hast revealed Thyself and hast enlightened the world, glory to Thee

This feast is also sometimes referred to as Epiphany by English-speaking Orthodox Christians, but that name more properly refers to the Western Christian feast falling on that same day and commemorating the visit of the Magi to the child Jesus. The term "Epiphany" does appear in the services for this feast, however.
Originally, there was just one Christian feast of the shining forth of God to the world in the human form of Jesus of Nazareth. It included the celebration of Christ's birth, the adoration of the Wisemen, and all of the childhood events of Christ such as his circumcision and presentation to the temple as well as his baptism by John in the Jordan. There seems to be little doubt that this feast, like Easter and Pentecost, was understood as the fulfillment of a previous Jewish festival, in this case the Feast of Lights.

Orthodox Christians mark epiphany with mass; while swimmers brave icy waters

Orthodox Christian worshippers plunged into chilly waters across southern and eastern Europe on Tuesday to retrieve crucifixes cast by priests in an old ritual marking the feast of Epiphany.
In Istanbul, Turkey, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians, first led a liturgy at the Patriarchal Cathedral of St. George to mark the day on which the Greek Orthodox Church commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ.
Later, hundreds of members of the Greek Orthodox Christian community gathered on the shores of the Golden Horn for the traditional Epiphany ceremony of the Blessing of the Waters.
The Patriarch tossed a blessed cross into the water and around a dozen worshippers dived into the cold sea to retrieve it in snowy weather.
The person who gets the cross is considered to be especially blessed in the coming year.
There were similar scenes in Greece on Tuesday.
Representatives of the Greek Church, local government officials and believers gathered in Faliro, an Athens coastal suburb to watch swimmers brave cold temperatures to retrieve a large cross from the chilly waters.
After obtaining the cross and returning it to the priest, the swimmers lined up to kiss the crucifix in his hands.
In the mountain city of Kalofer, in central Bulgaria, scores of men in traditional dress waded into the icy Tundzha River with national flags.
Led by a bass drummer and several bagpipers, the men danced for nearly an hour, up to their waists in the cold water, pushing away floating chunks of ice.
Many of them had brought homemade plum brandy and red wine to help them brave the freezing cold.

wn.com/Orthodox Christians Mark Epiphany With Mass While Swimmers Brave Icy Waters

Children in Mexico City celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany on Saturday with the release of 150 thousand balloons bearing letters from them requesting gifts from the "Three Kings" who traditionally visit their homes on Sunday.
The Three Kings Day refers to the wise men, or Magi, who according to Christian tradition, journeyed to Bethlehem to greet Jesus Christ shortly after he was born.
Children in Mexico City have been visiting the balloon tree since December 17 to place their letters in balloons with their gift requests to the Three Kings.
The balloons were held inside the 34-metre (111 feet) high "Tree of Wishes" plastic structure at Iztapalapa neighbourhood.
"This is all about the kids, it's a very big illusion for them, it was nice, I liked it," said Rosemary Morales, who brought her children to the event.
The Three Kings Day marks the end of the holiday festivities in Mexico.
Families gather on the day before Three Kings Day, also called Twelfth Night, to eat the traditional Three Kings holiday cake.

Orthodox Christians celebrated the feast of Epiphany on Monday - some by leaping into the icy waters of a river in rural Bulgaria, others by attending a colourful parade of musicians in the West Bank town of Bethlehem.
Epiphany is held every year on 6 January and marks the end of the 12 days of Christmas.
The day is also celebrated in some Western Christian churches as Three Kings Day, which marks the visit of the Magi, or three wise men, to baby Jesus.
In the central Bulgarian town of Kalofer, hundreds of Christians marked Epiphany by donning national costumes and wading into the frigid waters of the Tundzha river.
Some played bagpipes, others the drums - and the musical celebration continued once the believers had returned to dry land.
Many of them had brought homemade plum brandy and red wine to help them brave the freezing cold.
There was music, too, in the West Bank town of Bethlehem.
The local patriarch of the Orthodox church, Theofilos III, led worshippers in a procession to the Church of Nativity, which is built on the traditional spot of Jesus' birth.
The procession included many colourfully dressed musicians playing bagpipes and drums.
Istanbul played host again to another Epiphany tradition.
Scores of men plunged into the icy waters of Istanbul's Golden Horn in an annual Greek Orthodox ritual commemorating the baptism of Jesus.
The men waded until one retrieved a wooden cross that was tossed into the water by Bishop Germanos.
Yorgos Alexandrides, a 47-year-old from Ptolemaida, in Greece, emerged victorious.
"I feel very good and I feel very blessed," he said. "I wish that generations to come will feel the joy and the happiness that I feel for right now."
Earlier in the day, worshippers attended a Christian mass at the Church of St George.

Orthodox Christians in the Serbian capital Belgrade celebrated the Epiphany on Wednesday with a special outdoor ceremony conducted by the country's Patriarch and a traditional icy swim at Lake Ada.
Scores of people attended the event which this year saw 57 people dive into near-freezing water and race across a small section of the lake in an attempt to win the Cross of Honour.
This year's winner was Nikola Bankovic.
Epiphany marks the 12 days of Christmas, also known as Feast of Epiphany.
While in western Christian traditions, Epiphany marks the visit of the wise men or magi to the infant Jesus, in Eastern Orthodoxy the festival commemorates Christ's baptism, by John the Baptist in the River Jordan.
For Orthodox Christians in Russia, Serbia, the Holy Land, Egypt and other Eastern Orthodox churches, Epiphany is celebrated on the 19th of January as their Christmas falls on the 7th.

Mexicans are celebrating "Three Kings Day" otherwise known as the feast of The Epiphany.
It marks the visit - according to Christian tradition - of three kings bearing gifts for baby Jesus.
In Mexico it is an old tradition and part of the Christmas season in which children receive gifts and eat traditional food and sweets.
The Christmas season in Mexico just wouldn't be the same without the presence of the Three Wise Men.
Santa Claus may have become a popular figure but the wise men - also known as the Three Kings remain the paramount symbol of the Christmas season.
Each year men dress up as the three kings gather in Mexico City's historic downtown to pose with children and get their wish list.
Some children wear crowns baring the names of the wise men: Balthazar, Melchior and Gaspar.
The tradition of the three kings day comes from Spain.
It coincides with the feast of the Epiphany when the three wise men visited baby Jesus bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
For the Mexican kings the economy is being overshadowed by the economic crisis.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
Right now the economic situation is having its ups and downs. It sometimes goes well, others badly, that's how we are.

STORYLINE
People packed the streets in Spain's towns and cities on Saturday to watch traditional parades marking the eve of the Epiphany, a Christian holiday celebrating the coming of the Magi to baby Jesus.
In Madrid, tens of thousands of people, including many children, cheered as dozens of decorated floats glided past accompanied by clowns, fantasy figures, jugglers, horse-drawn carriages and marching bands paraded down the main Paseo de la Castellana boulevard to Cibeles Square in a three-hour nationally televised event.
Children and adults in costume party dress stood atop the floats tossing candies down to the crowds.
Each procession ended with present-laden camels followed by three floats carrying the kings of the Orient.
"They give out lots of sweets. It's the best," one boy said.
Another woman said: "To see the faces of the children and the parents I get all emotional...You need to live it."
The processions, Spain's most popular, are held each year 12 nights after Christmas, on the eve of the Feast of the Epiphany.
They celebrate the story of the three wise men believed to have followed a bright star to offer gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newborn Jesus in Bethlehem.
Children in Spain annually write wish-laden letters to the Magi, instead of to Santa Claus, asking for gifts which are left for them on January 6.
The "Kings" holiday is also popular in Latin America and the Caribbean.

STORYLINE:
Greek Orthodox Christians in Istanbul celebrated the Epiphany on Sunday and held their annual swim in the Bosphorus.
The spiritual leader of the world's estimated 300 (m) million Orthodox Christians, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, led the service.
After the ceremony, the Patriarch and his congregation walked to the shores of the Bosphorus Straits, where a group of men dived into its chilly waters to retrieve a crucifix.
The dive is an annual tradition among Greek Orthodox Christians in Turkey.
A worshipper told AP Television it was a holy day.
"This is the day of Holy Christ to be baptised. This is why we are throwing this cross in to the water and this is very important that the youngsters race to dive and take the cross out of the water," said Can Yumurta.
The diver who retrieved the cross, George Goutzgoudis, a 30-year-old man from Thessaloniki, said: "I am so happy. This is my first time here for this ceremony. I wish good health and happiness to everyone."
The festival of Epiphany marks the twelve days of Christmas, also known as Feast of Epiphany and Three Kings Day.
But for other Orthodox Christians, as in Russia, Serbia, the Holy Land, Egypt and other Eastern Orthodox churches, the Epiphany is celebrated on the 19th as their Christmas falls on 7 January.
It is because those other Orthodox branches retained the Julian calendar for its liturgical schedule, while other branches of the Christian church follow the Gregorian calendar introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1500.

The Feast of Timkat is the most important Christian holiday in Ethiopia. Timkat (baptism), is the Ethiopian Orthodox celebration of the Epiphany. It celebrates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by John the Baptist.
On the eve of Timkat, clergy wear ceremonial robes, men and women don traditional white clothing (shamma), and children wear colorful clothes and crowns to partake in the festive processions. The Tabot, a symbol of the Ark of Covenant containing the 10 Commandments, is wrapped in luxurious clothing and taken out of the church in procession on the head of the priest. The Divine Liturgy is celebrated near a body of Holy water early in the morning after which the water is blessed and sprinkled on the faithful gathered. Many choose to immerse themselves in the Holy water, thereby, symbolically renewing their baptism. Following the ceremony, the Tabot is taken back to church in a colorful procession.
Timkat is celebrated on the 10th day of Terr on the Ethiopian calendar, which corresponds to Jan. 19 (or Jan. 20 in Leap Year) in the Gregorian calendar.
