As fighting continues in Syria, 43 Islamist groups have united to form a joint "Army of Islam." The groups have agreed to act under the joint leadership of Sheikh Muhammad Zahran Alloush. The Army of Islam's creation was officially announced in a ceremony on Sunday, September 29, 2013.
Al-Qaeda's Jabhat al-Nusra, along with ideologically similar groups such as 'Ahrar al-Sham' (Free [Men] of the Levant), did not join the "Army of Islam", despite sharing its goal of toppling President Bashar Assad and instituting Sharia (Islamic law) in Syria.
At the same time, the "Free Syrian Army" (FSA) is working to reunite its leadership after several commanders disassociated themselves last week from its leadership.
Thirteen militant brigades announced that they reject the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) and the FSA under the leadership of Salim Idriss. The groups' commanders called to unite under an Islamist umbrella group.

A U.S.-backed alliance of Syrian Kurdish and Arab fighters advanced against Islamist insurgents in the north of the country on Friday. A monitoring group said it captured at least one village in Aleppo province. Fighters from the Democratic Forces of Syria seized the village of Tanab after heavy clashes with the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front and the powerful Ahrar al Sham. The Democratic Forces of Syria includes the Kurdish YPG militia, which has been the most effective partner on the ground for U.S.-led air strikes. The successful operation came just days after the alliance seized a dam from Islamic State further east, cutting one of its main supply routes across the Euphrates.

Over the last three decades, Islamic educational institutions (madrassas) operating in Pakistan have witnessed a dramatic expansion in their numbers and geographical scope. Being more than simply the breeding grounds for militant groups and ideologies, madrassas are internally diverse and dynamic institutions. Using the urban milieu of Lahore as the framework, Bushra uses the term ‘Islamist civic infrastructure’ to analyze the vast array of functions and activities that madrassas perform in collaboration with other entities, both religious and secular. These include educational institutions of several types, publications and publishing houses, student and professional organizations, religious merchandise, and regular meetings and rituals. This infrastructure has a well-defined internal hierarchy, and has penetrated evermore arenas of social activity over time. The ideological and cultural reach of this civic Islamic component is arguably even more influential and resilient than the militant component usually associated with ‘jihad’.

Popular discourse suggests there are links between the size or growth of Muslim populations and the threat or strength of violent Islamist groups, linking these to overall levels of violence, and Islamist and/or Muslim-identified violence specifically. This research seeks to test these theories, by exploring whether population size, diversity, growth, or other socio-economic conditions influence the rate, occurrence or proportion of Islamist and Muslim-identified violence.
About This Speaker:
Caitriona Dowd is Senior Researcher for the Armed Conflict Location & Event Dataset (ACLED), and a PhD candidate in Geography in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Her PhD research centers on Islamist violence in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on the East and West African case studies of Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia and emerging dynamics in the Sahel. Caitriona holds an MSc in Development Studies from the London School of Economics, where her research focused on civilian vulnerability to violence in conflict-affected contexts, and has worked on humanitarian programming for Kenya, Uganda and Somalia.

Lou Dobbs
Louis Carl "Lou" Dobbs (born September 24, 1945) is an American television personality, author, and radio host on the Fox Business Network. He anchored CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight until November 2009, when he announced on the air that he would leave the network.
Dobbs was born in Texas and lived there and in Idaho during his childhood. After graduating from Harvard University, he worked in government and banking before becoming a news reporter for several local media outlets. He had worked with CNN since its founding in 1980, serving as a reporter and vice president. He was the host and managing editor for CNN's Moneyline, which premiered in 1980 and was renamed Lou Dobbs Tonight in 2003. Dobbs resigned from CNN in 1999, rejoined in 2000, and resigned again in November 2009, when he joined Fox News. He also hosts a syndicated radio show, Lou Dobbs Radio and has written several books since 2001.
Dobbs describes himself as an "independent populist" and is known for his opposition to NAFTA and support for immigration enforcement. For his reporting, he has won Emmy, Peabody, and Cable ACE awards.

Al-Qaeda's Jabhat al-Nusra, along with ideologically similar groups such as 'Ahrar al-Sham' (Free [Men] of the Levant), did not join the "Army of Islam", despite sharing its goal of toppling President Bashar Assad and instituting Sharia (Islamic law) in Syria.
At the same time, the "Free Syrian Army" (FSA) is working to reunite its leadership after several commanders disassociated themselves last week from its leadership.
Thirteen militant brigades announced that they reject the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) and the FSA under the leadership of Salim Idriss. The groups' commanders called to unite under an Islamist umbrella group.

Over the last three decades, Islamic educational institutions (madrassas) operating in Pakistan have witnessed a dramatic expansion in their numbers and geographical scope. Being more than simply the breeding grounds for militant groups and ideologies, madrassas are internally diverse and dynamic institutions. Using the urban milieu of Lahore as the framework, Bushra uses the term ‘Islamist civic infrastructure’ to analyze the vast array of functions and activities that madrassas perform in collaboration with other entities, both religious and secular. These include educational institutions of several types, publications and publishing houses, student and professional organizations, religious merchandise, and regular meetings and rituals. This infrastructure has a well-defined internal hierarchy, and has penetrated evermore arenas of social activity over time. The ideological and cultural reach of this civic Islamic component is arguably even more influential and resilient than the militant component usually associated with ‘jihad’.

Caitriona Dowd is Senior Researcher for the Armed Conflict Location & Event Dataset (ACLED), and a PhD candidate in Geography in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Her PhD research centers on Islamist violence in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on the East and West African case studies of Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia and emerging dynamics in the Sahel. Caitriona holds an MSc in Development Studies from the London School of Economics, where her research focused on civilian vulnerability to violence in conflict-affected contexts, and has worked on humanitarian programming for Kenya, Uganda and Somalia.

Following an interview on Fox Business during which I discussed the situation in Cyprus and the potential broader implications of the crisis, Lou Dobbs, apparently now more optimistic about the U.S. economy, was very dismissive of my comments. But instead of just countering my arguments, he also impugned my character. He effectively accused me of being a charlatan, stating that my real objective was to scare people into opening accounts at my offshore bank. As I am often the bearer of bad economic news, I understand the tendency to shoot the messenger. Of course, Mr. Dobbs had no way of knowing that my offshore bank does not accept accounts from U.S. citizens or residents (Fox Business does not have an international audience yet) and therefore for this particular interview the only purpose for my bringing up my bank was to illustrate how the crisis was affecting the offshore banking industry; from the unique perspective of the owner of such an institution.

Yusuf Estes was born in Ohio, and was raised in Houston, Texas in a Anglo-Saxon Protestant family.[2]
From 1962 to 1990, his career was in the music industry, entertainment, marketing, teaching music and music minister, he owned several musical instrument companies including the Estes Piano and Organ Company. He produced and directed live entertainment programs in the United States from the mid 1960s until his last endeavor for cable TV in Florida, entitled 'Estes Music Jamboree'.[3]
Yusuf Estes became a Muslim in the early 1990s after meeting an Egyptian named Muhammad.[4] Following his conversion, Estes entered the field of Dawah, or evangelizing the Islamic faith.
Estes denies the theory of Darwinian evolution and instead professes creationism as described by Islamic scriptures.
After embracing Islam, Estes pursued Arabic language and Quranic studies in Egypt, Morocco and Turkey.[5]
From 2004, Estes regularly appeared on the Islam Channel, as well as Peace TV and on Huda TV which are 24/7 Islamic channels broadcasting in many countries around the globe, via satellite and via the website WatchIslam.com TV Channels.
He has also set up websites directed toward English speaking Muslim youth which include www.TubeIslam.com, a Muslim video sharing site, and www.ChatIslam.com, a Muslim Chatroom, and for young children www.WorldPreschool.com, Preschool Learning.
He also produced a television series aimed toward English speaking children of Muslim parents entitled, "Qasas Ul Anbiya" - Stories of the Prophets.
Estes has also started a free-to-air Internet and satellite TV channel called GuideUS.tv which currently broadcasts commercial-free programming on Islam 24/7.[6] This is saleh reflection school boy class 7b

Active in Islamic missionary work in the United States, he is often featured as guest presenter and keynote speaker at various Islamic events as well as frequently appearing on various Islamic satellite TV channels. Estes takes a dim view of today's public school system public education in the United States for any children, and highly recommends schools where they might receive a religious education combined with more advanced scholastic education.
Yusuf Estes was born in Ohio, and was raised in Houston, Texas in a Anglo-Saxon Protestant family.[2]
From 1962 to 1990, his career was in the music industry, entertainment, marketing, teaching music and music minister, he owned several musical instrument companies including the Estes Piano and Organ Company. He produced and directed live entertainment programs in the United States from the mid 1960s until his last endeavor for cable TV in Florida, entitled 'Estes Music Jamboree'.[3]
Yusuf Estes became a Muslim in the early 1990s after meeting an Egyptian named Muhammad.[4] Following his conversion, Estes entered the field of Dawah, or evangelizing the Islamic faith.
Estes denies the theory of Darwinian evolution and instead professes creationism as described by Islamic scriptures.
After embracing Islam, Estes pursued Arabic language and Quranic studies in Egypt, Morocco and Turkey.[5]
From 2004, Estes regularly appeared on the Islam Channel, as well as Peace TV and on Huda TV which are 24/7 Islamic channels broadcasting in many countries around the globe, via satellite and via the website WatchIslam.com TV Channels.
He has also set up websites directed toward English speaking Muslim youth which include www.TubeIslam.com, a Muslim video sharing site, and www.ChatIslam.com, a Muslim Chatroom, and for young children www.WorldPreschool.com, Preschool Learning.
He also produced a television series aimed toward English speaking children of Muslim parents entitled, "Qasas Ul Anbiya" - Stories of the Prophets.
Estes has also started a free-to-air Internet and satellite TV channel called GuideUS.tv which currently broadcasts commercial-free programming on Islam 24/7.[6] This is saleh reflection school boy class 7b

According to Jacob Olidort and Marcus Sheff, while some new Muslim religious textbooks are opening up to pro-Western perspectives, the Islamic State is using its robust publishing enterprise to foster a uniquely fundamentalist worldview that puts the so-called “IS Caliphate” at its core and denigrates other approaches to Islam. IS textbooks are explicitly designed to raise a "jihadi generation," with subjects ranging from the proper Islamic family unit to weapons skills.
The event marks the forthcoming release of Olidort's groundbreaking new report for the Institute: Inside the Caliphate's Classroom: Textbooks, Guidance Literature, and Indoctrination Methods of the Islamic State. This is the first systematic study of the various Arabic-language classroom textbooks and other literature that the group has published over the past two years.
Marcus Sheff is CEO of the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (IMPACT-se), a Jerusalem-based nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that assesses educational efforts across the world to determine compliance with international standards derived from UNESCO. Its activities include encouraging the rejection of violence and advocating for change when necessary.
Jacob Olidort is a Soref Fellow at The Washington Institute, where his work focuses on the Islamic State's ideology and Islamist groups in general. He received his Ph.D. in Near Eastern studies from Princeton University with a dissertation on the history and ideology of Salafism, and spent two years in the region, including as a Fulbright Scholar in the United Arab Emirates.
