International Date Line
The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary line of navigation on the surface of the Earth that runs from the north pole to the south pole and demarcates the change of one calendar day to the next. It passes through the middle of the Pacific Ocean, roughly following the 180° line of longitude but deviating to pass around some territories and island groups.
Geography
For parts of its length, the IDL follows the meridian of 180° longitude, roughly down the middle of the Pacific Ocean. To avoid crossing nations internally, the IDL deviates west around the US Aleutian Islands, separating them from islands in the far east of Russia, and further south, it deviates east around various island nations in the Pacific such as Kiribati, Samoa, Tonga and Tokelau. These various deviations, east or west, generally accommodate the political and/or economic affiliations of the affected areas.
Proceeding from north to south, the first deviation of the IDL from 180° is to pass to the east of Wrangel Island and the Chukchi Peninsula, the easternmost part of Russian Siberia. It then passes through the Bering Strait between the Diomede Islands at a distance of 1.5 km (1 mi) from each island. It then bends considerably west of 180°, passing west of St. Lawrence Island and St. Matthew Island and finally bisecting the Aleutian Islands between those belonging to the US -- Attu Island being the westernmost—and the Commander Islands belonging to Russia. It then bends southeast again to return to 180°. Thus all of Russia is to the west of the IDL and all of the USA to the east.

International
International mostly means something (a company, language, or organization) involving more than a single country. The term international as a word means involvement of, interaction between or encompassing more than one nation, or generally beyond national boundaries. For example, international law, which is applied by more than one country and usually everywhere on Earth, and international language which is a language spoken by residents of more than one country.
Origin of the word
The term international was coined by the utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham in his Introduction to Principles of Morals and Legislation, which was printed for publication in 1780 and published in 1789. Bentham wrote: "The word international, it must be acknowledged, is a new one; though, it is hoped, sufficiently analogous and intelligible. It is calculated to express, in a more significant way, the branch of law which goes commonly under the name of the law of nations. The word was adopted in French in 1801.Thomas Erskine Holland noted in his article on Bentham in the 11th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica that "Many of Bentham's phrases, such as 'international,' 'utilitarian,' 'codification,' are valuable additions to our language; but the majority of them, especially those of Greek derivation, have taken no root in it."

Understanding Time Zones
Time zones are based on the fact that the Earth moves 15 degrees longitude each hour. Since there are 24 hours in a day there are 24 standard time zones. (24 hours x 15º=360º) Time zones are counted from the Prime Meridian (0º longitude). Each time zone is counted at 15 º intervals and extends 7½º either side of a central meridian. For example, Sydney, Australia lies in the 150ºE central meridian, and the time zone includes all locations between 142½ºE and 157½ºE.

According to "inside" information, flights to Fiji from Guam and Honolulu on Continental/United will cease as of September 2011. If you plan on visiting Fiji with Star Alliance miles, book now.
This video shows Continental Airline's service to Nadi, Fiji on Boeing 737-800s from Los Angeles, California to Nadi, Fiji.
Flights to Fiji on Continental Airlines leave from Honolulu, Hawaii at 11:59 p.m. on Fridays. You cross over the international date-line and arrive in Fiji early Sunday morning. The flight returns to Honolulu on Sunday mornings and arrives in Honolulu on Saturday afternoons (because of the international date-line). If traveling on to North America, the flight from Honolulu leaves at night and arrives Sunday.
Flying on Continental Airlines is great. Super friendly service, nice leg room, and the day flight back from Fiji is eye candy. A great way to travel!
The following miles are all it takes to get to this South Pacific paradise:

Honolulu 40,000 (coach) to 80,000 (1st)

*Note: Prices fluctuate daily and can double or quadruple for no apparent reason. The only itinerary that stays constant in price is the Guam to Nadi flight. The dates above reflect this crazy pricing scheme: it is actually cheaper to fly from California to Nadi than from Honolulu - even though Honolulu is much closer to Fiji than California. There seems to be no logic.
As a rule of thumb: flights from the west coast of the USA should be in the $1,000 to $1,300 range. Flights from elsewhere in North America should be in the $1,300 to $1,500 range. If the prices you are seeing on-line are higher than this standard (for economy), wait a few weeks and check again - or choose other dates for travel. This advice, of course, is also dependent upon increasing oil prices not being transferred to passengers as fuel surcharges.
If traveling from Europe, it is best to first book a flight to Los Angeles (Continental quotes a price for the quoted May travel dates of $713.50 from London) and then book a flight to Fiji from Los Angeles. You will save yourself around US $3,500. Please take into account the international date line when making reservations and the night flight from Hawaii to the US mainland. It gets very confusing.

Our trip to Chile wouldn't have been complete without a visit to the capital, so towards the end of our stay we decided to visit Santiago. We had 4 days to discover what the city was all about, so we set out to visit the main attractions, sample Chilean food (Comida Chilena), and explore various neighborhoods on foot. We may not have been able to see it all, but the following is our experience in the city. For anyone planning a similar trip, here's a look at 20 things to do in Santiago de Chile on your visit:

Santa Lucia is an urban park smack dab in the middle of Santiago and it’s a popular hangout in the afternoons and weekends. The hike is a pleasant one with lots to see, including fountains, spiralling staircases, defensive forts, sprawling gardens, and cool lookout points.
Lastarria is a neighbourhood located just east of Santa Lucia hill and it was once the bohemian hub of the city.Today it is very popular with tourists as it offers an outdoors flea market, an international mix of cafes and restaurants, & live music.
For panoramic views of the city, ride the funicular to the top of San Cristobal Hill.
Plaza de Armas is the heart of Santiago’s historic centre. There are lots of benches under the cover of palm trees, and the place is buzzing with activity. The Metropolitan Cathedral is located in the historic centre of Santiago overlooking the square. The construction you see today dates back to the year 1800, since previous cathedrals were destroyed in earthquakes.
Santiago’s Central Market is the place to come for the freshest food. You'll find rows of restaurants serving up everything from grilled fish to ceviche. We really like our ceviche, so we found a place serving exactly that.
Parque Forestal is a park that forms a long stretch of greenery along the Mapocho River. It’s a nice green escape in the middle of the city.
Palacio de la Moneda is the seat of the President of the Republic of Chile. This is where you can come to watch the changing of the guard. Just underneath Palacio de La Moneda, you’ll find Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda, which is a cultural centre featuring exhibitions, design shops, and a small selection of cafes.
Bellavista is a cultural hub with lots of theatres, cinemas, cafes, museums, and restaurants. The most famed home in the neighbourhood is La Chascona, the home of the famed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.
