In a bid to battle a growing waste problem, The Maldives has been dumping almost all of its rubbish on a single one of its some 1,200 islands.
Thilafushi island has turned into a dump, and environmental activists say the bad practices adopted there are causing contaminants to seep into the country's once pristine sea water, and then into the food chain.

Maldives - The Other Side Of A Tourist destination 2014 HD 1080p
If you were to describe any island of the Maldives archipelago as a dump, you’d be sure to raise a few eyebrows. With its clear, blue waters, beaches of white sand and colourful coral reefs, the Maldives is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on earth. Yet Thilafushi, one of the 1192 coral islands that make up the Maldives, is anything but beautiful. In fact, it’s a municipal landfill designed specifically as a dumping ground for the island nation’s waste.
Situated seven kilometres to the west of capital Malé, Thilafushi was originally a lagoon comprised of shallow coral reefs until 1992 when the Maldivian government decided upon a reclamation project that would serve to resolve Maldives’ urgent waste management problem. Soon Thilafushi became known by locals as Rubbish Island, with ships bringing 330 tonnes of refuse daily where, after minimal sifting and separation by migrant workers, the majority of it is buried at landfill sites.

In 1991 the Maldivian government launched a project for the creation of an artificial atoll that has become one of the world’s largest trash islands and risks contaminating the pristine beauty of a delicate ecosystem, THILAFUSHI.
Experts explain the waste management operations in the area and the methods to contain one of the most critical environmental issues facing the country.

Famous for its pristine beaches and fabulous islands The Maldives seem to have it all going for them. Although the perfect crescent beaches are on the walls of every travel agency in the world, little is actually know about the country and its inhabitants itself.
Official Muslim state
The massive crowds of tourists that arrive every day on the 'Airport Island' are picked up by their pre-booked resorts and transported onwards by small sea planes or speed boats. That is after they have to give up any tax free bought alcohol at customs. The Maldives are an official Muslim state with very strong religious rules. That also explaines why for example a brought along bible will be confiscated.
Garbage island
Not many people come to this capitol. But it's an easy going place. Of course living on such a small island with over 100.000 people generates some problems. For instance there's the garbage problem. It's all shipped of to the garbage island around the corner where massive back plumes hang over the green tropical seas.
Also socially things aren't as mellow as you would expect from the holiday brochures. An enourmously high rate of illegal abortions is a silent witness of what lies beneath the surface of this tropical capitol. But all these things seem far away when you arrive at your resort with a cocktail in your hand. Apart from the rising sealevel things should be fine.

Maldives (/ˈmɒldiːvz/, /ˈmɔːldiːvz/, 
i/ˈmɔːldaɪvz/ or /ˈmældaɪvz/), officially the Republic of Maldives (Dhivehi Raa'jeyge Jumhooriyya), is an island country and archipelago in the Indian Ocean. It lies southwest of India and Sri Lanka in the Laccadive Sea. The chain of twenty six atolls stretches from Ihavandhippolhu Atoll to the Addu Atoll. The capital and largest city is Malé, traditionally called the "King's Island."
Historically linked with the Indian subcontinent, Maldives is a Muslim-majority country. From the mid-sixteenth century colonial powers dominated the islands: Portugal, the Netherlands and Britain. The islands gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1965, becoming a republic in 1968. The country is ruled by a president and its government is authoritarian. The Maldivian economy is dominated by tourism and fishing. The World Bank classifies the country as having an upper middle income economy.
Encompassing a territory spread over roughly 90,000 square kilometres (35,000 sq mi), Maldives is one of the world's most geographically dispersed countries. It is the smallest Asian country in both land area and in population. The archipelago is located atop the Chagos-Maldives-Laccadive Ridge, a vast submarine mountain range in the Indian Ocean, which also forms a terrestrial ecoregion, together with the Chagos and the Lakshadweep. With an average ground-level elevation of 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in) above sea level, it is the planet's lowest country. It is also the country with the lowest natural highest point in the world, at 2.4 metres (7 ft 10 in). The government has pledged to make Maldives a carbon-neutral country by 2019 amid concerns about rising sea-levels.

In a bid to battle a growing waste problem, The Maldives has been dumping almost all of its rubbish on a single one of its some 1,200 islands.
Thilafushi island has turned into a dump, and environmental activists say the bad practices adopted there are causing contaminants to seep into the country's once pristine sea water, and then into the food chain.
Al Jazeera's Steve Chao reports from Thilafushi Island, The Maldives.

Maldives - The Other Side Of A Tourist destination 2014 HD 1080p
If you were to describe any island of the Maldives archipelago as a dump, you’d be sure to raise a few eyebrows. With its clear, blue waters, beaches of white sand and colourful coral reefs, the Maldives is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on earth. Yet Thilafushi, one of the 1192 coral islands that make up the Maldives, is anything but beautiful. In fact, it’s a municipal landfill designed specifically as a dumping ground for the island nation’s waste.
Situated seven kilometres to the west of capital Malé, Thilafushi was originally a lagoon comprised of shallow coral reefs until 1992 when the Maldivian government decided upon a reclamation project that would serve to resolve Maldives’ urgent waste management problem. Soon Thilafushi became known by locals as Rubbish Island, with ships bringing 330 tonnes of refuse daily where, after minimal sifting and separation by migrant workers, the majority of it is buried at landfill sites.

Famous for its pristine beaches and fabulous islands The Maldives seem to have it all going for them. Although the perfect crescent beaches are on the walls of every travel agency in the world, little is actually know about the country and its inhabitants itself.
Official Muslim state
The massive crowds of tourists that arrive every day on the 'Airport Island' are picked up by their pre-booked resorts and transported onwards by small sea planes or speed boats. That is after they have to give up any tax free bought alcohol at customs. The Maldives are an official Muslim state with very strong religious rules. That also explaines why for example a brought along bible will be confiscated.
Garbage island
Not many people come to this capitol. But it's an easy going place. Of course living on such a small island with over 100.000 people generates some problems. For instance there's the garbage problem. It's all shipped of to the garbage island around the corner where massive back plumes hang over the green tropical seas.
Also socially things aren't as mellow as you would expect from the holiday brochures. An enourmously high rate of illegal abortions is a silent witness of what lies beneath the surface of this tropical capitol. But all these things seem far away when you arrive at your resort with a cocktail in your hand. Apart from the rising sealevel things should be fine.
