THE ACTORS:
Jon Voight (real name Jonathan Vincent) born Dec 29th 1938, Yonkers New York USA.
Midnight Cowboy was his first major starring role and he's had many successes since.
He came back into the mainstream with the release of Mission Impossible (with Tom Cruise) in 1996.
He's known for his parts in 63 movies/tv related projects.
He won a BAFTA award for Best Newcomer.
Dustin Hoffman: Born Aug 8th 1937 Los Angeles, California.
Began his acting career in 1960 - but came to the forefront after his role as Benjamin Braddock in the now famous movie called 'The Graduate' (1967) with Anne Bankcroft.
He's won 2 Academy Awards for the movies, 'Kramer V Kramer' and for 'Rain Man' with Tom Cruise.
3 BAFTAS, 3 Drama Desk Awards, A Genie Award, An EMMY Award
and received the 'Life Achievement Award' in 1999.
THE MUSIC:
The song 'Everybody's Talkin' was originally written by American folk singer, FRED NEIL in 1968.
Fred Neil was born in 1936, Cleveland Ohio, but moved later to Florida.
He died in 2001, having never reached commercial success, mainly in part to his unwillingness to tour - a trait he shared with Nilsson.
The song was memorably performed by:
HARRY NILSSON.
Born 1941, Brooklyn and was of Swedish descent. Nilsson (as he preferred to be known) was the subject of a documentary called:
''Who is Harry Nilsson (and why is everybody talkin' about me?)''
He won 2 Grammy Awards for the album, '' Nilsson Schmilsson'',
and awards for Everybody's Talkin' and 'Without You'.
THE MUSICIANS:
The now FAMOUS and hauntingly memorable Midnight Cowboy Instrumental Theme was penned by composer JOHN BARRY OBE (Yorkshire UK 1933).
He moved to the USA in 1975.
John Barry was best known for composing the musical film scores to 11 of
The James Bond movies (something that can be evidenced in the MC theme)...
From Russia With Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), ThunderBall (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), The Man With The Golden Gun (1974), MoonRaker (1979), OctoPussy (1983), A View To A Kill (1985) and, The Living Daylights (1987).
He also penned the scores for 'Dances With Wolves' and 'Out Of Africa'.
He learnt to play the trumpet during his National Service in Cyprus - and went on to from his own band 'The John Barry 7', in 1957. He discovered a love for composing music and first came to be noticed by The James Bond film makers after he arranged Monty Norman's 'The James Bond Theme' for Dr No (1962).
He's won 5 Academy Awards - 2 for Born Free, one each for The Lion In Winter, Dances with Wolves and Out of Africa.
He died in January 2011.
The other person responsible for making the MC Theme so memorably haunting is:
TOOTS THIELEMANS.
Born Belgium 1933, and famous for whistling, guitar and of course Harmonica.
He moved to the US in 1994 and was a member of ''Charlie Parker's All Stars''.
He's played with some of the greatest of artistes during his career (e.g.Dinah Washington, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones) and is credited as one of the greatest harmonica players of the 20th century.
He has 17 albums to his name - all since 1955.
In 1994, Midnight Cowboy (the motion picture) was deemed so culturally and historically significant by the Library of Congress - that it was selected for preservation by The US Film Industry.

Midnight Cowboy is a 1969 American drama film based on the 1965 novel of the same name by James Leo Herlihy. It was written by Waldo Salt, directed by John Schlesinger, and stars Dustin Hoffman and newcomer Jon Voight in the title role. Notable smaller roles are filled by Sylvia Miles, John McGiver, Brenda Vaccaro, Bob Balaban, Jennifer Salt and Barnard Hughes; M. Emmet Walsh is an uncredited, pre-fame extra.
The film won three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. It is the only X-rated film ever to win Best Picture.
A young Texan named Joe Buck (Jon Voight) works as a dishwasher in a diner. As the film opens, Joe dresses himself like a rodeo cowboy, packs a suitcase, and quits his job. He heads to New York City in the hope of leading the life of a hustler.
Joe's naïveté becomes evident as quickly as his cash disappears upon his arrival in New York. He is unsuccessful in his attempts to be hired by wealthy women. When finally successful in bedding a middle-aged New Yorker (Sylvia Miles), Joe's attempt to "talk business" results in the woman breaking down in tears and Joe giving her $20 instead. (It ends up that she was a call girl herself as she thought he was another John.) Joe then meets the crippled Enrico "Ratso" Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman), a third-rate con man who easily tricks Joe out of $20 by offering to introduce him to a well-known pimp, who instead turns out to be a Bible thumper (John McGiver). Joe flees the scene in pursuit of Rizzo, but Rizzo is long gone.

Began his acting career in 1960 - but came to the forefront after his role as Benjamin Braddock in the now famous movie called 'The Graduate' (1967) with Anne Bankcroft. He's won 2 Academy Awards for the movies, 'Kramer V Kramer' and for 'Rain Man' with Tom Cruise. 3 BAFTAS, 3 Drama Desk Awards, A Genie Award, An EMMY Award and received the 'Life Achievement Award' in 1999. THE MUSIC: The song 'Everybody's Talkin' was originally written by American folk singer, FRED NEIL in 1968. Fred Neil was born in 1936, Cleveland Ohio, but moved later to Florida. He died in 2001, having never reached commercial success, mainly in part to his unwillingness to tour - a trait he shared with Nilsson. The song was memorably performed by: HARRY NILSSON. Born 1941, Brooklyn and was of Swedish descent. Nilsson (as he preferred to be known) was the subject of a documentary called: ''Who is Harry Nilsson (and why is everybody talkin' about me?)'' He won 2 Grammy Awards for the album, '' Nilsson Schmilsson'', and awards for Everybody's Talkin' and 'Without You'. THE MUSICIANS: The now FAMOUS and hauntingly memorable Midnight Cowboy Instrumental Theme was penned by composer JOHN BARRY OBE (Yorkshire UK 1933). He moved to the USA in 1975. John Barry was best known for composing the musical film scores to 11 of The James Bond movies (something that can be evidenced in the MC theme)... From Russia With Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), ThunderBall (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), The Man With The Golden Gun (1974), MoonRaker (1979), OctoPussy (1983), A View To A Kill (1985) and, The Living Daylights (1987). He also penned the scores for 'Dances With Wolves' and 'Out Of Africa'. He learnt to play the trumpet during his National Service in Cyprus - and went on to from his own band 'The John Barry 7', in 1957. FILM DESCRIPTION: Based on a James Leo Herlihy novel, British director John Schlesinger's first American film dramatized the small hopes, dashed dreams, and unlikely friendship of two late '60s lost souls. Dreaming of an easy life as a fantasy cowboy stud, cheerful Texas rube Joe Buck (Jon Voight) heads to New York City to be a gigolo, but he quickly discovers that hustling isn't what he thought it would be after he winds up paying his first trick (Sylvia Miles). He gets swindled by gimpy tubercular grifter Rico "Ratso" Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) but, when Joe falls in the direst of straits, Ratso takes Joe into his condemned apartment so that they can help each other survive. Things start to look up when Joe finally lands his first legit female customer (Brenda Vaccaro) at a Warhol-esque party; Ratso's health, however, fails. Joe turns a final trick to get the money for one selfless goal: taking Ratso out of New York to his dream life in Miami. One of the first major studio films given the newly minted X rating for its then-frank portrayal of New York decadence, Midnight Cowboy was critically praised for Schlesinger's insight into American lives, with the intercut mosaic of Joe's memories and Ratso's dreams lending their characters and actions greater psychological complexity. While they may have been drawn by the seamy content (tame by current standards), the young late '60s audience responded to Joe's and Ratso's confusion amidst turbulent times and to the connection they make with each other despite their alienation from the surrounding culture. Midnight Cowboy became one of the major financial and artistic hits of 1969, winning Oscars for Best Picture (the first for an X-rated film), Best Director, and former blacklistee Waldo Salt's screenplay. Though the one-two punch of Midnight Cowboy and The Graduate (1967) proved Hoffman's range and Voight's Joe Buck made him a star, both lost Best Actor to classical cowboy John Wayne for True Grit. The film was later re-rated R by the MPAA. Ferrante & Teicher were a duo of American piano players, known for their light arrangements of familiar classical pieces, movie soundtracks, and show tunes. In 1947, they launched a full-time concert career, at first playing nightclubs, then quickly moving up to playing classical music with orchestral backing. Dreaming of an easy life as a fantasy cowboy stud, cheerful Texas rube Joe Buck (Jon Voight) heads to New York City to be a gigolo, but he quickly discovers that hustling isn't what he thought it would be after he winds up paying his first trick (Sylvia Miles). He gets swindled by gimpy tubercular grifter Rico "Ratso" Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) but, when Joe falls in the direst of straits, Ratso takes Joe into his condemned apartment so that they can help each other survive. Things start to look up when Joe finally lands his first legit female customer (Brenda Vaccaro) at a Warhol-esque party; Ratso's health, however, fails. Dustin Hoffman: Born Aug 8th 1937 Los Angeles, California.
Began his acting career in 1960 - but came to the forefront after his role as Benjamin Braddock in the now famous movie called 'The Graduate' (1967) with Anne Bankcroft.
He's won 2 Academy Awards for the movies, 'Kramer V Kramer' and for 'Rain Man' with Tom Cruise.

The song was memorably performed by:
HARRY NILSSON.
Born 1941, Brooklyn and was of Swedish descent. Nilsson (as he preferred to be known) was the subject of a documentary called:

He won 2 Grammy Awards for the album, '' Nilsson Schmilsson'',

From Russia With Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), ThunderBall (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), The Man With The Golden Gun (1974), MoonRaker (1979), OctoPussy (1983), A View To A Kill (1985) and, The Living Daylights (1987).
He also penned the scores for 'Dances With Wolves' and 'Out Of Africa'.
He learnt to play the trumpet during his National Service in Cyprus - and went on to from his own band 'The John Barry 7', in 1957. He discovered a love for composing music and first came to be noticed by The James Bond film makers after he arranged Monty Norman's 'The James Bond Theme' for Dr No (1962).
He's won 5 Academy Awards - 2 for Born Free, one each for The Lion In Winter, Dances with Wolves and Out of Africa.
He died in January 2011.
The other person responsible for making the MC Theme so memorably haunting is:
TOOTS THIELEMANS.
Born Belgium 1933, and famous for whistling, guitar and of course Harmonica.

He's played with some of the greatest of artistes during his career (e.g.Dinah Washington, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones) and is credited as one of the greatest harmonica players of the 20th century.
He has 17 albums to his name - all since 1955.
In 1994, Midnight Cowboy (the motion picture) was deemed so culturally and historically significant by the Library of Congress - that it was selected for preservation by The US Film Industry.

Dreaming of an easy life as a fantasy cowboy stud, cheerful Texas rube Joe Buck (Jon Voight) heads to New York City to be a gigolo, but he quickly discovers that hustling isn't what he thought it would be after he winds up paying his first trick (Sylvia Miles). He gets swindled by gimpy tubercular grifter Rico "Ratso" Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) but, when Joe falls in the direst of straits, Ratso takes Joe into his condemned apartment so that they can help each other survive. Things start to look up when Joe finally lands his first legit female customer (Brenda Vaccaro) at a Warhol-esque party; Ratso's health, however, fails. Joe turns a final trick to get the money for one selfless goal: taking Ratso out of New York to his dream life in Miami. FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on a James Leo Herlihy novel, British director John Schlesinger's first American film dramatized the small hopes, dashed dreams, and unlikely friendship of two late '60s lost souls. Dreaming of an easy life as a fantasy cowboy stud, cheerful Texas rube Joe Buck (Jon Voight) heads to New York City to be a gigolo, but he quickly discovers that hustling isn't what he thought it would be after he winds up paying his first trick (Sylvia Miles). He gets swindled by gimpy tubercular grifter Rico "Ratso" Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) but, when Joe falls in the direst of straits, Ratso takes Joe into his condemned apartment so that they can help each other survive. Things start to look up when Joe finally lands his first legit female customer (Brenda Vaccaro) at a Warhol-esque party; Ratso's health, however, fails. Joe turns a final trick to get the money for one selfless goal: taking Ratso out of New York to his dream life in Miami. One of the first major studio films given the newly minted X rating for its then-frank portrayal of New York decadence, Midnight Cowboy was critically praised for Schlesinger's insight into American lives, with the intercut mosaic of Joe's memories and Ratso's dreams lending their characters and actions greater psychological complexity. Between 1950 and 1980, they were a major American easy listening act, and scored four big U.S. hits: "Theme From The Apartment" (Pop #10), "Theme From Exodus" (Pop #2), "Tonight" (Pop #8), and "Midnight Cowboy" (Pop #10). They performed and recorded regularly with pops orchestras popular standards by George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and others. In 1973, they did the Hollywood Radio Theater theme for the Rod Serling radio drama series, The Zero Hour.
