ELIZABETH McMahon’s highrise pad overlooking the ocean could very well be the envy of all women.
The Gold Coast’s queen of style shares her two-bedroom Main Beach apartment with umpteen shoes and a wardrobe full of designer clothes.
Books on fashion and styling are stacked around as well as candles and flowers, while a white silk orchid sits elegantly above the glass dining table.
While her work enables her to rub shoulders with celebrities including George Clooney and Alex Perry, Elizabeth’s home is a reflection of aspects of her life. Behind the glamour her childhood shines through with a collection of family photos and a gold cabinet of traditional chinaware reminding her of her family in Africa.
“I’m very close with my sisters and the last time I went home I found that my mum has kept the old sewing machine which she used to make our clothes with,” Elizabeth, who was born in Uganda, says.
“It’s just for show now because it’s too rusted and old to use. “
Stepping into the vanilla-perfumed boudoir, the gold-rimmed furniture and glass cabinets bring to mind a distinct Marie Antoinette style but Elizabeth says she found most of her furniture locally.
“I lived in Paris for four months when I was modelling and the city was inspiring but I’ve picked most of my furniture up from around town,” Elizabeth says.
“Two of my favourite hanging art pieces are with gold fish painted on tin and I got them from a little store in Marina Mirage.”
The stylist’s other pieces were picked up from Southport’s Runway International and Found On Ferry, Bundall’s Dare Gallery and of course Versace.
Finding such treasures on the Coast is just one of the reasons Elizabeth loves it here. She also loves the lifestyle.
While she has worked extensively as a freelance stylist, Elizabeth is currently the lead fashion stylist for Pacific Fair Shopping Centre.
She moved into her apartment four years ago, but it took time to come together.
“The 3m mirror wouldn’t fit in the lift so I had to get a picture framing expert to take the mirror apart and rebuild it,” Elizabeth says.
Elizabeth says she loves nothing more than returning after a busy day at work and enjoying her home.
“My house isn’t a trend, it’s a reflection of things that I love,” she says.
