THE wreckage of a small plane has been found among mountains in Nepal after disappearing with 24 people on board enroute to an area popular with trekkers.

Officials say the chance of there being survivors is slim.

Government official Yogendra Kuwar said the plane was on an 18-minute flight, but lost contact 10 minutes after takeoff. He said there were no landing strips between the two airports the plane was flying between.

The plane had taken off from Pokhara, a resort town west of Kathmandu, and was heading north to Jomsom, which is the starting point for trekkers going into mountainous areas.

Three army helicopters joined the search which had been hampered by thick fog.

The Twin Otter aircraft was operated by Tara airlines in Nepal.

It is understood the aircraft was carrying three crew and 20 passengers. Two were reportedly children.

So far very few details have been released about the passengers, though one is believed to be Chinese and another Kuwaiti.
