The event takes place in Nikolaevo - a small and lovely town in the heart of the “Rose Valley” in the early for the Bulgarian democracy 1991. Dr. Zhelev is visiting after being invited by Prof. Dr. Nikolai Guentchev and Andrei Valtchev. The three studied together at the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. They meet with the local community and afterwards participate in an informal celebration of the folk holiday “Trifon Zarezan” in the nearby vineyards.

Министерският съвет обяви 1 февруари 2015 г. (неделя) за ден на национален траур по повод кончината на Президента на Република България д-р Желю Желев.
Желю Желев. Днес си отиде първият демократично избран президент на България. Авторът на "Тоталитарната държава" и "Фашизмът". Радетелят за гласност и преустройство, който обичаше да казва, че политиката се смята за една от най-мръсните сфери на човешката култура. Но и в нея има етика и естетика. И като първия демократично избран президент на страната се ръководеше от този принцип – да търси етиката в политиката. И от последната си книга “Митове и легенди за българския преход” сякаш доктор Желю Желев ни отправя завет, с който рисува истинското лице на България като страна, която е стъпила на пътя към промяната и от нашето общество зависи дали ще продължи по него или ще се изгуби в морето от митове и лъжи. Zhelyu Zhelev, Bulgaria's first democratically-elected president, died on Jan. 30 at 79, his family told AFP.
"Zhelev was a symbol of public and intellectual dignity and of uncompromising faith in liberty and democracy," speaker of parliament Tsetska Tsatcheva said as the chamber held a minute's silence.
Zhelev was the founder of Bulgaria's anti-communist opposition before the ousting of the regime in 1989 and served as president between 1990 and 1997.
Born into a provincial workers' family, Zhelev graduated in philosophy but was expelled from the communist party -and Sofia- in the 1960s for questioning Lenin's theories.
A book he published in 1981 that likened communism to fascism was banned but copies still passed secretly from hand to hand among intellectuals.
In January 1989, he co-founded the Club for Glasnost and Perestroika, one of the first groups to openly criticise the regime.
When communism fell in November 1989, he became the leader of the anti-communist Union of Democratic Forces (UDF), which grouped several like-minded factions.
Following the ex-communists' victory in the first democratic parliamentary elections in June 1990, Zhelev led massive street protests that forced the resignation of president Petar Mladenov.
Parliament then appointed Zhelev as president and in 1992 he won public backing in Bulgaria's first democratic presidential election.
He served until 1997, refusing to move with his wife and daughters into the presidential palace and donated a third of his salary to a charity for orphans.
He did not hesitate to criticise his UDF movement, which took power in 1991 and had, he said, led to a rift in society.
Zhelev planned to seek a second mandate but lost internal UDF elections in 1996, when the party united behind his eventual successor, president Petar Stoyanov.
Zhelev, short with white hair and a strong regional accent, remained in politics but his public appearances gradually dwindled, although he remained widely respected.

Zhelyu Zhelev
Zhelyu Mitev Zhelev (Bulgarian: Желю Митев Желев; 3 March 1935 – 30 January 2015) was a Bulgarian politician and former dissident who served as the first non-Communist President of Bulgaria from 1990 to 1997. He was elected as President by the 7th Grand National Assembly, and was then elected directly by the people in 1992. He lost his party's nomination for his 1996 reelection campaign after losing a tough primary race to Petar Stoyanov.
Biography
Early life
Zhelyu Zhelev was born March 3, 1935 in Veselinovo village, Shumen. He graduated with a degree in philosophy from the Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" in 1958, and later earned a Ph.D. in 1974.
Dissident
Zhelev was a member of the Bulgarian Communist Party, but was expelled from it for political reasons in 1965. He was unemployed for six years since all employment in Bulgaria was state-regulated.
In 1982 he published his controversial work, "The Fascism" (Фашизмът). Three weeks after the volume's publication in 1982, it was banned and removed from the bookstores and libraries throughout the nation, as it likened Bulgaria's socialist state to the country's fascist administration during World War II.

In January 1989, he co-founded the Club for Glasnost and Perestroika, one of the first groups to openly criticise the regime.
When communism fell in November 1989, he became the leader of the anti-communist Union of Democratic Forces (UDF), which grouped several like-minded factions.
Following the ex-communists' victory in the first democratic parliamentary elections in June 1990, Zhelev led massive street protests that forced the resignation of president Petar Mladenov.
Parliament then appointed Zhelev as president and in 1992 he won public backing in Bulgaria's first democratic presidential election.
He served until 1997, refusing to move with his wife and daughters into the presidential palace and donated a third of his salary to a charity for orphans.
He did not hesitate to criticise his UDF movement, which took power in 1991 and had, he said, led to a rift in society.
Zhelev planned to seek a second mandate but lost internal UDF elections in 1996, when the party united behind his eventual successor, president Petar Stoyanov.
Zhelev, short with white hair and a strong regional accent, remained in politics but his public appearances gradually dwindled, although he remained widely respected.
