We still in
Noor Ul
Bayan book
Noor Ul Bayan or (Nourani Qaida) is the first step for those who wish to start learning to read holy Qur'an with proper pronunciation.
Lesson 10: The
Definite Article لام التعريف
And
Hamzah al-Wasl
The definition of the definite
Article لامis: It is an extra Laam Sakinah added to the basic makeup of the word. This noun is preceded by a Hamzah al-Wasl ( همزة الوصل) that is read with a fat-hah when starting the word, dropped when continuing from a previous word. This definite article لام التعريف is like the
English word “the”.
When there is the definite article لام التعريف preceding a noun (it only enters nouns) there are only two possible rules for the لام التعريف :
1. اظهار
Means : to pronounce the Laam clear this occurs in the
Moon Laam لام قمرية
2. ادغام Means : to merge the Laam into the following
Letter this occurs in the Sun Laamلام شمسية
As we know, when there is an ادغام , the two letters merge into one, and the letter that the two merge into acquires a Shaddah In this case then, the letter immediately following the لام شمسية , will have a Shaddah on it.
A reminder: the first letter of the word is a Hamzah al wasl, and it is only used if we are starting on the word. If we start a word that has the
Definite article لام as the second letter, we start on the Hamzah al-wasl with a Fat-hah.
In this video you will be able to differentiate between the moon Laam and the sun Laam in Quran .
Then we will cover the rules of Hamzah al-Wasl ( همزة الوصل too.
Hamzat ul-Wasl
هَمْزَةُ الْوَصَل
Fundamental tips :
It is established that the reader of the Qur’an must start reciting with a voweled letter, never a
Sukoon.
It is also an established fundamental of reading the Qur’an that stopping is always with a Sukoon on the last letter that is recited, never a vowel,
Some words are not written with a vowel on the first letter, and, as stated starting a word with a Sukoon is not allowed.
In this case an extra Hamzah is put on the beginning of the word. This is called Hamzah al-wasl, , هَمْزَةُ الْوَصَلِ
The Hamzat ul-wasl looks like an
Alif with a little ص letter over it
The Definition of هَمْزَةُ الْوَصَلِ:
It is an extra Hamzah at the beginning of the word, established (pronounced) when starting (starting with the word), dropped when continuing (when joining the word with the word preceding it).
It occurs in
Verbs,
Nouns and the definite article لام التعريف
