In Plymouth, Massachusetts- site of the colony built by the Mayflower passengers - Matteo Brault spends his days living a 17th century life, along with dozens of other re-enactors on the modern-day Plimoth Plantation. Brault works full-time as a 17th-century style blacksmith, using traditional tools like a grindstone, hand-made nails and a large bellows for making the fire hot enough for forging iron and steel. He also helps build the traditional shelters.
The simplest homes in town were built using cratchets- natural forks in trees- as support for the ridgepole of the roof. The walls are built up with “wattle”- small sticks for the lattice structure- and “daub”- a mortar of clay, earth and grasses. Instead of using the traditional English lime wash to protect the walls, the colonists took advantage of the plentiful wood in the America and created clapboard siding by cleaving wood into thin boards. For the thatch roofs, large bundles of water reed or wheat straw are woven with a giant needle by two people working in tandem (one outside and one inside). “It’s like a giant quilt made of grass,” explains Brault, “which makes a water-tight roof that essentially acts as a giant sponge. It absorbs water and laps it off.”
The Plimoth Plantation is open to visitors from March through November. The site also has a native Wampanoag homesite (we will tour in a separate video).

A very good study of the period procedures in loading, firing and deployment of these pieces. It shows the textbook use of round shot, bar shot and even hot shot. This will come as a breath of fresh air to those of you like myself that cannot stand seeing exploding shells fired out of pre Shrapnel era cannons (I say that and I acknowledge that shells were fired from howitzers and mortars). If anyone is puzzled by the hot shot aftermath...its because they aimed for the powder magazine and successfully set it on fire. It is very apparent that a master gunner was at the scene and consulted in the details. This is apparent in everything from the use of wadding, pricking of the powder bag, the method by which the linstock was kept burning and the line written in chalk on the improvised gun to aid in the aiming.

This new display showcases early seventeenth-century costume in The Burrell Collection. The highlight is an extremely rare crimson silk satin petticoat embroidered with a variety of flowers and birds that will be displayed full-length for the first time.
Dating from about 1610-1620, its provenance suggests that it may have belonged to Anne of Denmark, the wife of James VI and I. Other favourites returning to display after conservation work are an embroidered woman's waistcoat together with coifs, nightcaps and sweet bags. New interpretation includes this specially commissioned film looking at how these garments were created and worn.

The 17th century was the century which lasted from 1601 to 1700 in the Gregorian calendar. The 17th century falls into the Early Modern period of Europe and in that continent was characterized by the Dutch Golden Age, the Baroque cultural movement, the French Grand Siècle dominated by Louis XIV, the Scientific Revolution, and The General Crisis. This last is characterised in Europe most notably by the Thirty Years' War, the Great Turkish War, the end of the Dutch Revolt, the disintegration of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and the English Civil War.
Some historians extend the scope of the General Crisis to encompass the globe, as with the demographic collapse of the Ming Dynasty, China lost approximately 30% of its population. It was during this period also that European colonization of the Americas began in earnest, including the exploitation of the fabulously wealthy silver deposits of Potosí in Upper Peru and Mexico which resulted in great bouts of inflation as wealth was drawn into Europe from the rest of the world.

Perhaps a musicologist might carp on some fine points, but then again probably not - musicologists actually enjoy a good tune, too. There is a nice couple pages of notes by Jack Ashworth on the historical background of the music, and a further short page by David Douglass on how he envisioned the 'nature' of several of the pieces. There is also a French translation following the English notes. Seven instruments are mixed higgledy-piggledy as the performers deem best - a copy of a 1652 Amati Violin, and copies of a Theorbo, a Cittern, a 16-string harp, an Italian Double Harp, an Irish Harp, and a Guitar. For the curious Douglass plays the violin only, but offers playing consanguineous with his name. Among the choices cut 15 - "Long Cold Nights" - seems almost New Age in its evocation of the heavens: one might be in Big Sur looking up at the stars. The many other pieces come in divers moods and tempi, with great care given to which instruments are employed. It's difficult to imagine anyone disliking such engaging tunes, such joy in their making. The recording is of course digital so it helps to have a system capable of taming the inevitable string stridencies, but that said - if you like music from this period, or are curious, this CD offers a wonderful selection. Simple living 101: what can be learnt from a 17th century town
In Plymouth, Massachusetts- site of the colony built by the Mayflower passengers - Matteo Brault spends his days living a 17th century life, along with dozens of other re-enactors on the modern-day Plimoth Plantation. Brault works full-time as a 17th-century style blacksmith, using traditional tools like a grindstone, hand-made nails and a large bellows for making the fire hot enough for forging iron and steel. He also helps build the traditional shelters. The simplest homes in town were built using cratchets- natural forks in trees- as support for the ridgepole of the roof. The walls are built up with “wattle”- small sticks for the lattice structure- and “daub”- a mortar of clay, earth and grasses. Instead of using the traditional English lime wash to protect the walls, the colonists too... -

Cannon Gunnery - early 17th Century
A very good study of the period procedures in loading, firing and deployment of these pieces. It shows the textbook use of round shot, bar shot and even hot shot. This will come as a breath of fresh air to those of you like myself that cannot stand seeing exploding shells fired out of pre Shrapnel era cannons (I say that and I acknowledge that shells were fired from howitzers and mortars). If anyone is puzzled by the hot shot aftermath...its because they aimed for the powder magazine and successfully set it on fire. It is very apparent that a master gunner was at the scene and consulted in the details. This is apparent in everything from the use of wadding, pricking of the powder bag, the method by which the linstock was kept burning and the line written in chalk on the improvised gun to a... -

Gilt & Silk - 17th Century Costume at the Burrell Collection
This new display showcases early seventeenth-century costume in The Burrell Collection. The highlight is an extremely rare crimson silk satin petticoat embroidered with a variety of flowers and birds that will be displayed full-length for the first time. Dating from about 1610-1620, its provenance suggests that it may have belonged to Anne of Denmark, the wife of James VI and I. Other favourites returning to display after conservation work are an embroidered woman's waistcoat together with coifs, nightcaps and sweet bags. New interpretation includes this specially commissioned film looking at how these garments were created and worn. On show now at the Burrell Collection. -

Test firing aims to show how 17th century sea battles were conducted
A 24-pounder gun was successfully fired at a newly-built section of the Royal Swedish warship Vasa's hull on Wednesday (October 22). The firing is part of a research project which aims to show how sea battles during the early 17th century were fought and the effect guns had in these battles. The research project, funded by The Friends of the Vasa Museum support association, will look at the firing distances chosen and the impact of different kinds of ammunition. It also seeks to understand under what conditions the gun crews were operating, exposed to blast waves, noise and smoke and operating heavy weights on a moving platform. According to The Friends of the Vasa Museum, the test firing was successful and showed that Vasa's cannon had considerable firepower and fairly good precision ... -

A very good study of the period procedures in loading, firing and deployment of these pieces. It shows the textbook use of round shot, bar shot and even hot shot. This will come as a breath of fresh air to those of you like myself that cannot stand seeing exploding shells fired out of pre Shrapnel era cannons (I say that and I acknowledge that shells were fired from howitzers and mortars). If anyone is puzzled by the hot shot aftermath...its because they aimed for the powder magazine and successfully set it on fire. It is very apparent that a master gunner was at the scene and consulted in the details. This new display showcases early seventeenth-century costume in The Burrell Collection. The highlight is an extremely rare crimson silk satin petticoat embroidered with a variety of flowers and birds that will be displayed full-length for the first time.
Dating from about 1610-1620, its provenance suggests that it may have belonged to Anne of Denmark, the wife of James VI and I. Other favourites returning to display after conservation work are an embroidered woman's waistcoat together with coifs, nightcaps and sweet bags. New interpretation includes this specially commissioned film looking at how these garments were created and worn.

These selections of English Country Dances from the publications of the English music publisher John Playford are recorded and played so well as to relegate any criticism to spoiled grapes. Perhaps a musicologist might carp on some fine points, but then again probably not - musicologists actually enjoy a good tune, too. There is a nice couple pages of notes by Jack Ashworth on the historical background of the music, and a further short page by David Douglass on how he envisioned the 'nature' of several of the pieces. There is also a French translation following the English notes. Seven instruments are mixed higgledy-piggledy as the performers deem best - a copy of a 1652 Amati Violin, and copies of a Theorbo, a Cittern, a 16-string harp, an Italian Double Harp, an Irish Harp, and a Guitar. For the curious Douglass plays the violin only, but offers playing consanguineous with his name.
Among the choices cut 15 - "Long Cold Nights" - seems almost New Age in its evocation of the heavens: one might be in Big Sur looking up at the stars. The many other pieces come in divers moods and tempi, with great care given to which instruments are employed. It's difficult to imagine anyone disliking such engaging tunes, such joy in their making. The recording is of course digital so it helps to have a system capable of taming the inevitable string stridencies, but that said - if you like music from this period, or are curious, this CD offers a wonderful selection.

A 24-pounder gun was successfully fired at a newly-built section of the Royal Swedish warship Vasa's hull on Wednesday (October 22).
The firing is part of a research project which aims to show how sea battles during the early 17th century were fought and the effect guns had in these battles.
The research project, funded by The Friends of the Vasa Museum support association, will look at the firing distances chosen and the impact of different kinds of ammunition.
It also seeks to understand under what conditions the gun crews were operating, exposed to blast waves, noise and smoke and operating heavy weights on a moving platform.
According to The Friends of the Vasa Museum, the test firing was successful and showed that Vasa's cannon had considerable firepower and fairly good precision at moderate distances.
The Vasa sank on her maiden voyage in Stockholm 1628 and was salvaged in 1961.
It is the only preserved 17th century ship in the world and can now be seen in a specially built museum in Stockholm.
Copies of Vasa's gun carriage, cannon, a 24-pound cannonball and a 4,5x3,4 metre section of its hull in solid oak were produced for the test. Gun powder with a similar chemical composition as used on Vasa was also made in Germany.

A Shrine for the Unifier Tokugawa! Ueno Toshogu Shrine!
Ueno's Toshogu Shrine is very different from many of the shrines I'd seen in the past. Considering it was built in the 17th century I was really surprised how many Chinese influences I saw in the shrine as well as the amount of gold that covered the shrine. The architecture of the surrounding walls was fantastic and vibrant. Every section of the wall had different colorful animals carved into them. There were also a couple really old trees surrounding the temple and the grounds were extremely well taken care of. Tokugawa Ieyasu was the last of three great daimyos in the Sengoku (Warring States) Period and the one that finally accomplished unifying Japan. Ueno's Toshogu Shrine is very different from many of the shrines I'd seen in the past. Considering it was built in the 17th century I was really surprised how many Chinese influences I saw in the shrine as well as the amount of gold that covered the shrine. The architecture of the surrounding walls was fantastic and vibrant. Every section of the wall had different colorful animals carved into them. There were also a couple really old trees surrounding the temple and the grounds were extremely well taken care of.
Tokugawa Ieyasu was the last of three great daimyos in the Sengoku (Warring States) Period and the one that finally accomplished unifying Japan. Toshogu Shrines are actually dedicated to the Tokugawa Family and the one in Nikko actually holds the remains of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Toshogu shrine was actually a part of Kaneji Temple complex until the early 19th Century.
Entrance to the inner shrine area is about 500 yen, but it is definitely well worth it to see the intricate detail of this 400 year old Shrine.
Access
Ueno Park is extremely easy to get to. Just take the Yamanote Line from Tokyo or Shinjuku and the Park is right outside the station. To get to the shrine just head straight into the park from the station and head towards the zoo. It's pretty easy to find with all the signs and maps located all over the park.

i got the idea for this by watching loads of history programs about 16th 17th century art music buildings famous people its a nice little tune i think if im wrong with 16th or 17th century this music is based on let me know but i think im very close after some research i have done if i could spend 1 week in a century i would choose the 16th or 17th century to see how people lived if the historian Giles Coren makes it his next tv project i would be happy to take part :)

Shahi Eidgah is an open prayer hall situated in Sylhet meant for the Eid prayers. More than 100,000 people can perform prayer at same time in this Eidgah. It is also one of the most visited tourist spots in the city. Couple of years ago the gates were rebuilt to ensure safety and security.

He was attentive and totally focused, although many people were already finding seats in the room; the room would be quite crowded before long. But he was relaxed, ready to get to the job at hand: Showing us how he carves panels in the style of 17th century craftsmen, and to share wonderful information on carvings and details of furniture of the period.
