Formula SAE is a student design competition organized by SAE International (SAE, previously known as the Society of Automotive Engineers). The competition was started in 1978 and was originally called SAE Mini Indy.
The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a student design team to develop a small Formula-style race car. The prototype race car is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item. The target marketing group for the race car is the non-professional weekend autocross racer. Each student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules, whose purpose is both ensuring on-track safety (the cars are driven by the students themselves) and promoting clever problem solving.
The prototype race car is judged in a number of different events. The points schedule for most Formula SAE events is:
In addition to these events, various sponsors of the competition provide awards for superior design accomplishments. For example, best use of E-85 ethanol fuel, innovative use of electronics, recyclability, crash worthiness, analytical approach to design, and overall dynamic performance are some of the awards available. At the beginning of the competition, the vehicle is checked for rule compliance during the Technical Inspection. Its braking ability, rollover stability and noise levels are checked before the vehicle is allowed to compete in the dynamic events (Skidpad, Autocross, Acceleration, and Endurance).
In science, a formula is a concise way of expressing information symbolically as in a mathematical or chemical formula. The informal use of the term formula in science refers to the general construct of a relationship between given quantities. The plural of formula can be spelled either as formulas or formulae (from the original Latin).
In mathematics, a formula is an entity constructed using the symbols and formation rules of a given logical language. For example, determining the volume of a sphere requires a significant amount of integral calculus or its geometrical analogue, the method of exhaustion; but, having done this once in terms of some parameter (the radius for example), mathematicians have produced a formula to describe the volume: This particular formula is:
Having obtained this result, and knowing the radius of any sphere in question, we can quickly and easily determine its volume. Note that the volume V and the radius r are expressed as single letters instead of words or phrases. This convention, while less important in a relatively simple formula, means that mathematicians can more quickly manipulate larger and more complex formulas. Mathematical formulas are often algebraic, closed form, and/or analytical.

Competition points are awarded in the categories of presentation, design, cost, acceleration, skid-pad, autocross, endurance, and fuel economy. Competition rules require that each vehicle conform to frame safety standards, that the engine be no larger than 610cc, and that the engine use an airflow restrictor. Student's are challenged with frame design, engine tuning, suspension setup, marketing, and many other aspects.

You never know what you'll see at the Tokoroa airfield these days. This morning it was a group of university students testing their Formula SAE racer at the gokart track next door. If you've never heard of Formula SAE, check out the Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_SAE If you're a petrol-head then you'll probably find this video of interest and it makes a nice change from the usual diet of RC planes ;-) Link to the YouTube channel mentioned: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWhj0uHHpi83TkY7x2vGj1Q
