Akbar Ganji, called by some "Iran's most famous dissident," was a commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. But, troubled by the regime's repressive nature, he became an investigative journalist in the 1990s, writing for Iran's pro-democracy newspapers. Most notably, he traced the murders of dissident intellectuals to Iran's secret service. In 2000 Ganji was arrested, sentenced to six years in prison, and banned from working as a journalist. His eighty-day hunger strike during his last year in prison mobilized the international human rights community.
The Road to Democracy in Iran, Ganji's first book in English, demonstrates his lifelong commitment to human rights and democracy. A passionate call for universal human rights and the right to democracy from a Muslim perspective, it lays out the goals and means of Iran's democracy movement, why women's rights trump some interpretations of Islamic law, and how the West can help promote democracy in Iran (he strongly opposes U.S. intervention) and other Islamic countries.
Abbas Milani serves as Ganji's translator.

STORYLINE:
Iran's leading investigative journalist, jailed for articles linking government officials to murder, returned to prison and resumed a hunger strike this weekend, following several days of mystery over his whereabouts, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
Akbar Ganji was given temporary release on May 31so that he could seek medical treatment for back pain and asthma.
On his release, he ended a 43-day hunger strike staged to protest against the judiciary's refusal to grant him medical leave.
And despite his incarceration - and his poor health - speaking to reporters on May 31, he still sounded defiant.
"I have not retreated from my positions. I have not become more radical, but neither have I become more conservative" said Ganji.
Last Thursday, judicial officials accused Ganji of going into hiding and overstaying his leave from the Evin prison, north of the capital.
In a letter published in newspapers on Saturday, Ganji denied going on the run and said authorities had reneged on a promise to give him a two week break from prison.
Ganji was jailed in 2000 after his probe of the murders of five dissidents by Intelligence Ministry agents.
He was convicted and jailed on charges that the articles he wrote in several reformist publications had violated the law.
Iran's hard-line judiciary has closed down more than 100 pro-democracy publications in the past five years - including the papers Ganji wrote for - on vague charges of insulting top clerics and religious sanctities.
Ganji had probed the murders of five political dissidents in the autumn of 1998, which the Intelligence Ministry later blamed on "rogue agents."
His articles said the killings were ordered by senior hard-liners in the ruling Islamic establishment, including former Intelligence Minister Ali Fallahian.
Fallahian has denied any involvement.

STORYLINE:
Iran's most senior dissident journalist, Akbar Ganji, was freed after completing a six-year prison sentence, his lawyer said Saturday.
The 46 year old was jailed in 2000 on charges that the articles he wrote violated the law and insulted the authorities.
Ganji came to prominence after his investigation of the 1998 murders of five dissidents by Intelligence Ministry agents.
The Intelligence Ministry blamed the murders on "rogue agents" within the secret service. But Ganji's articles in the newspapers Sobh-e-Emrouz, Khordad and Fath said the killings were ordered by senior hard-liners in the ruling Islamic establishment, including former Intelligence Minister Ali Fallahian. Fallahian has denied any involvement.
Iran's hard-line judiciary has closed down more than 100 pro-democracy publications in the past five years, including the papers Ganji wrote for, on vague charges of insulting religious sanctities and top clerics.
In his writings, Ganji said Iran needs to stop granting absolute rule to a top cleric, currently supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters.
Many world leaders, including US President George W. Bush and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, called for Ganji's release because of his deteriorating health, but Iran's hard-line authorities rejected the demands.
A statement by Iran's judiciary said Ganji was freed on leave for Nowruz, the Persian New Year holiday, which begins on Tuesday.
The holiday runs until April 3, and the statement said his prison sentence officially ends March 30, so it appeared unlikely Ganji would be taken back into custody.
Ganji spent most of his jail term in solitary confinement and was on a hunger strike for months.

Jalal-ud-Din Muhammad Akbar (Persian: جلال الدین محمد اکبر - Jalāl ud-Dīn Muḥammad Akbar), also known as Shahanshah Akbar-e-Azam or Akbar the Great (14 October 1542 – 27 October 1605), was the third Mughal Emperor. He was of Timurid descent; the son of Emperor Humayun, and the grandson of the Mughal Emperor Zaheeruddin Muhammad Babur, the ruler who founded the Mughal dynasty in India. At the end of his reign in 1605 the Mughal empire covered most of northern and central India. He is most appreciated for having a liberal outlook on all faiths and beliefs and during his era, culture and art reached a zenith as compared to his predecessors.
Akbar was 13 years old when he ascended the Mughal throne in Delhi (February 1556), following the death of his father Humayun. During his reign, he eliminated military threats from the powerful Pashtun descendants of Sher Shah Suri, and at the Second Battle of Panipat he decisively defeated the newly self-declared Hindu king Hemu. It took him nearly two more decades to consolidate his power and bring all the parts of northern and central India into his direct realm. He influenced the whole of the Indian Subcontinent as he ruled a greater part of it as an emperor. As an emperor, Akbar solidified his rule by pursuing diplomacy with the powerful Hindu Rajput caste, and by marrying Rajput princesses.

Akbar Ganji (Persian: اکبر گنجی , born 31 January 1960 in Qazvin Province) is an Iranian journalist and writer. He has been described as "Iran’s preeminent political dissident", and a "wildly popular pro-democracy journalist" who has crossed press censorship "red lines" regularly. A supporter of the Islamic revolution as a youth, he became disenchanted in the mid-1990s and served time in Tehran's Evin Prison from 2001 to 2006 after publishing a series of stories on the murder of dissident authors known as the Chain Murders of Iran. While in prison he issued a manifesto which established him as the first "prominent dissident, believing Muslim and former revolutionary" to call for a replacement of Iran's theocratic system with "a democracy".
Having been named honorary citizen of many European cities and awarded distinctions for his writing and civil, Ganji has won several international awards for his work, including the World Association of Newspapers' Golden Pen of Freedom Award,Canadian Journalists for Free Expression's International Press Freedom Award, the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders, the Cato Institute Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty and the John Humphrey Freedom Award.

Milton Friedman (July 31, 1912 – November 16, 2006) was an American economist, statistician, and author who taught at the University of Chicago for more than three decades. He was a recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, and is known for his research on consumption analysis, monetary history and theory, and the complexity of stabilization policy. As a leader of the Chicago school of economics, he influenced the research agenda of the economics profession. A survey of economists ranked Friedman as the second most popular economist of the twentieth century behind John Maynard Keynes, and The Economist described him as "the most influential economist of the second half of the 20th century…possibly of all of it."
Friedman's challenges to what he later called "naive Keynesian" (as opposed to New Keynesian) theory began with his 1950s reinterpretation of the consumption function, and he became the main advocate opposing activist Keynesian government policies. In the late 1960s he described his own approach (along with all of mainstream economics) as using "Keynesian language and apparatus" yet rejecting its "initial" conclusions. During the 1960s he promoted an alternative macroeconomic policy known as "monetarism". He theorized there existed a "natural" rate of unemployment, and argued that governments could increase employment above this rate (e.g., by increasing aggregate demand) only at the risk of causing inflation to accelerate. He argued that the Phillips curve was not stable and predicted what would come to be known as stagflation. Friedman argued that, given the existence of the Federal Reserve, a constant small expansion of the money supply was the only wise policy.

But, troubled by the regime's repressive nature, he became an investigative journalist in the 1990s, writing for Iran's pro-democracy newspapers. Most notably, he traced the murders of dissident intellectuals to Iran's secret service. In 2000 Ganji was arrested, sentenced to six years in prison, and banned from working as a journalist. His eighty-day hunger strike during his last year in prison mobilized the international human rights community.
The Road to Democracy in Iran, Ganji's first book in English, demonstrates his lifelong commitment to human rights and democracy. A passionate call for universal human rights and the right to democracy from a Muslim perspective, it lays out the goals and means of Iran's democracy movement, why women's rights trump some interpretations of Islamic law, and how the West can help promote democracy in Iran (he strongly opposes U.S. intervention) and other Islamic countries.
Abbas Milani serves as Ganji's translator.

Iran's leading investigative journalist, jailed for articles linking government officials to murder, returned to prison and resumed a hunger strike this weekend, following several days of mystery over his whereabouts, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
Akbar Ganji was given temporary release on May 31so that he could seek medical treatment for back pain and asthma.
On his release, he ended a 43-day hunger strike staged to protest against the judiciary's refusal to grant him medical leave.
And despite his incarceration - and his poor health - speaking to reporters on May 31, he still sounded defiant.
"I have not retreated from my positions. I have not become more radical, but neither have I become more conservative" said Ganji.
Last Thursday, judicial officials accused Ganji of going into hiding and overstaying his leave from the Evin prison, north of the capital.
In a letter published in newspapers on Saturday, Ganji denied going on the run and said authorities had reneged on a promise to give him a two week break from prison.
Ganji was jailed in 2000 after his probe of the murders of five dissidents by Intelligence Ministry agents.
He was convicted and jailed on charges that the articles he wrote in several reformist publications had violated the law.
Iran's hard-line judiciary has closed down more than 100 pro-democracy publications in the past five years - including the papers Ganji wrote for - on vague charges of insulting top clerics and religious sanctities.

The Intelligence Ministry blamed the murders on "rogue agents" within the secret service. But Ganji's articles in the newspapers Sobh-e-Emrouz, Khordad and Fath said the killings were ordered by senior hard-liners in the ruling Islamic establishment, including former Intelligence Minister Ali Fallahian. Fallahian has denied any involvement.
Iran's hard-line judiciary has closed down more than 100 pro-democracy publications in the past five years, including the papers Ganji wrote for, on vague charges of insulting religious sanctities and top clerics.
In his writings, Ganji said Iran needs to stop granting absolute rule to a top cleric, currently supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters.
Many world leaders, including US President George W. Bush and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, called for Ganji's release because of his deteriorating health, but Iran's hard-line authorities rejected the demands.
A statement by Iran's judiciary said Ganji was freed on leave for Nowruz, the Persian New Year holiday, which begins on Tuesday.
The holiday runs until April 3, and the statement said his prison sentence officially ends March 30, so it appeared unlikely Ganji would be taken back into custody.
Ganji spent most of his jail term in solitary confinement and was on a hunger strike for months.

Material reality, if you see what I mean. I was the only one who saw him. The person who was with me didn't see him at all. But no one else was supposed to see him except me because ... Fallacci: Indeed I don't, Majesty. I don't understand you at all. We had got off to such a good start, and instead now ... This business of visions, of apparitions.. It's not clear to me, that's all.
The shah: Because you don't believe. You don't believe in God, you don't believe me. Many people don't. Even my father didn't believe it. He never believed it, he always laughed about it. Anyway many people, albeit respectfully, ask if I didn't ever suspect it was a fantasy. My answer is no. No, because I believe in God, in the fact of having been chosen by God to accomplish a mission. My visions were miracles that saved the country. My reign has saved the country and it's saved it because God was besides me. I mean, it's not fair for me to take all the credit for myself for the great things that I've done for Iran. Mind you, I could. But I don't want to, because I know that there was someone else behind me. It was God. Do you see what I mean?

The shah: Religious dreams. Based on my mysticism. Dreams in which I saw what would happen in tow or three months, and that happened just that way in two or three months. But what these dreams were about, I can't tell you. They didn't have to do with me personally; they had to do with domestic problems of the country and so should be considered as state secrets. But perhaps you'd understand better if instead of the word dreams I used the word presentiments. I believe in presentiments too. Some believe in reincarnation, I believe in presentiments. I have continuous presentiments, as strong as my instinct. Even the day they shot at me from a distant of six feet, it was my instinct that saved me. Because, instinctively, while the assassin was emptying his revolver at me, I did what in boxing is called shadow dancing. And a fraction of a second before he aimed at my heart, I moved aside in such a way that the bullet went into my shoulder. A miracle. I also believe in miracles. When you think I've been wounded by a good five bullets, one in the face, one in the shoulder, one in the head, two in the body, and that the last one stuck in the barrel because the trigger jammed... You have to believe in miracles. I've had so many air disasters, and yet I've always come out unscathed -- thanks to a miracle while by God and the prophets. I see you're incredulous.

The shah: I don't deny I'm lonely. Deeply so. A king, when he doesn't have to account to anyone for what he says and does, is inevitably very much alone. But I'm not entirely alone because I'm accompanied by a force that others can't see. My mystical force. And the I get messages. Religious messages. I'm very, very religious. I believe in God, and I've always said that if God didn't exist, it would be necessary to invent him. Oh, I feel so sorry for those poor souls who don't have God. You can't live without God. I've lived with God ever since the age of five. That is, since God gave me those visions.

The shah: Of prophets. Oh, I'm surprised you don't know about it. Everyone knows I've had visions. I even wrote it in my autobiography. As a child I had two visions. One when I was five and one when I was six. The first time, I saw our Prophet Ali, he who, according to our religion, disappeared to return on the day when he would save the world. I had an accident -- I fell against a rock. And he saved me -- he placed himself between me and the rock. I know because I saw him. And not in a dream -- in reality. Material reality, if you see what I mean. I was the only one who saw him. The person who was with me didn't see him at all. But no one else was supposed to see him except me because ... Oh, I'm afraid you don't understand me.
Fallacci: Indeed I don't, Majesty. I don't understand you at all. We had got off to such a good start, and instead now ... This business of visions, of apparitions.. It's not clear to me, that's all.
The shah: Because you don't believe. You don't believe in God, you don't believe me. Many people don't. Even my father didn't believe it. He never believed it, he always laughed about it. Anyway many people, albeit respectfully, ask if I didn't ever suspect it was a fantasy. My answer is no. No, because I believe in God, in the fact of having been chosen by God to accomplish a mission. My visions were miracles that saved the country. My reign has saved the country and it's saved it because God was besides me. I mean, it's not fair for me to take all the credit for myself for the great things that I've done for Iran. Mind you, I could. But I don't want to, because I know that there was someone else behind me. It was God. Do you see what I mean?
Fallacci: No, Majesty. Because.. well, did you have these visions only as a child, or have you also had them later as an adult?
The shah: I told you, only as a child. Never as an adult -- only dreams. At intervals of one or two years. Or every seven or eight years. For instance, I once had two dreams in the span of fifteen years.

The shah: Religious dreams. Based on my mysticism. Dreams in which I saw what would happen in tow or three months, and that happened just that way in two or three months. But what these dreams were about, I can't tell you. They didn't have to do with me personally; they had to do with domestic problems of the country and so should be considered as state secrets. But perhaps you'd understand better if instead of the word dreams I used the word presentiments. I believe in presentiments too. Some believe in reincarnation, I believe in presentiments. I have continuous presentiments, as strong as my instinct. Even the day they shot at me from a distant of six feet, it was my instinct that saved me. Because, instinctively, while the assassin was emptying his revolver at me, I did what in boxing is called shadow dancing. And a fraction of a second before he aimed at my heart, I moved aside in such a way that the bullet went into my shoulder. A miracle. I also believe in miracles. When you think I've been wounded by a good five bullets, one in the face, one in the shoulder, one in the head, two in the body, and that the last one stuck in the barrel because the trigger jammed... You have to believe in miracles. I've had so many air disasters, and yet I've always come out unscathed -- thanks to a miracle while by God and the prophets. I see you're incredulous.
