Tobelo, the principal town of N. Halmahera Island in Indonesia can be reached by sea or air and offers a great selection of tourist activities. There's land touring, several beautiful fresh water lakes, hot spring pools, boat trips to outer islets, and very colorful and rich reefs for diving and snorkeling.

Jailolo, on the western side of Halmehera Island, Indonesia, is a very clean and pleasant rural area that's only 17 sea miles from the bustling, gateway city of Ternate. It has a small port with plenty of ferry and speed boat traffic from Ternate and other nearby communities. The town is neat and tidy, the houses brightly painted, and the area full of fruit trees of every sort, and fertile vegetable gardens. It's a refreshing change from the crowded, dirty, noisy city. The Culture and Tourism Office of Jailolo provided us a car, driver, and English-speaking guides to show us these glimpses of Jailolo town and surrounding areas: nutmeg/clove plantations, traditional meeting houses, sea views, local life, traditional craft and lore, including the traditional dish "Popeda" made from the starch of the local Sago Palm. The highlight was visiting a hot springs area, and from there, taking a local canoe down the river, all the way to the sea and to a beach strewn with stones that float and views of the majestic volcanoes from which the stones came. We also got to see the residence of the "Bupati", the highest man in the local government.
Jailolo is reportedly the place to be in mid-May for the annual Festival Teluk Jailolo. Each year there are colorful costumes, dance, and a number of sea activities, both traditional and modern. We thank the Bupati for his welcome, and the Culture and Tourism Office of West Halmehara for receiving us on such short notice and showing us the highlights of Jailolo. Filmed in December 2012.

On 2016 March 9th the sky above Pulau Plun (Halmahera Timur, North Molucca, Indonesia) being fairly covered early in the morning we decided to chase a hole in the clouds that was coming a bit to slowly to our area with one of the yacht tenders in the Buli Bay (Halmahera Sea).
The video shows part of the return ride.

Halmahera Sea
Halmahera Sea is a regional sea located in the central eastern part of the Australasian Mediterranean Sea. It is centered at about 1°S and 129°E and is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the north, Halmahera to the west, Waigeo and Irian Jaya to the east, and the Seram Sea to the south. It covers about 95,000 km and its topography comprises a number of separate basins and ridges, the chief of which is the Halmahera Basin reaching a depth of 2039 m.
Extent
The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) defines the Halmahera Sea as being one of the waters of the East Indian Archipelago. The IHO defines its limits as follows:
On the North A line from Wajaboela (Morotai) to Tg. Djodjefa, the Northern point of Halmahera.
On the East. A line from Tg. Gorango, the Northeastern point of Morotai Island, through Sajang and Kawé Islands to the Western extremes of Waigeo and Batanta Islands across to the Northwest point of Samawati Island, down the coast to Tg. Menonket its Southwest point, and thence to Tg. Sele, New Guinea (1°26′S 130°56′E / 1.433°S 130.933°E / -1.433; 130.933).

Indonesia -- Glimpses of Jailolo on West Halmahera
Jailolo, on the western side of Halmehera Island, Indonesia, is a very clean and pleasant rural area that's only 17 sea miles from the bustling, gateway city of Ternate. It has a small port with plenty of ferry and speed boat traffic from Ternate and other nearby communities. The town is neat and tidy, the houses brightly painted, and the area full of fruit trees of every sort, and fertile vegetable gardens. It's a refreshing change from the crowded, dirty, noisy city. The Culture and Tourism Office of Jailolo provided us a car, driver, and English-speaking guides to show us these glimpses of Jailolo town and surrounding areas: nutmeg/clove plantations, traditional meeting houses, sea views, local life, traditional craft and lore, including the traditional dish "Popeda" made from the star... -

On 2016 March 9th the sky above Pulau Plun (Halmahera Timur, North Molucca, Indonesia) being fairly covered early in the morning we decided to chase a hole in the clouds that was coming a bit to slowly to our area with one of the yacht tenders in the Buli Bay (Halmahera Sea).
