Under the 1977 Constitution of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), the Chairman of the Council of Ministers was the head of government and the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet was the head of state. The office of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers was the equivalent to a First World Prime Minister, while the office of the Chairman of the Presidium was equivalent to the office of the President. In the Soviet Union's seventy-year history there was no official leader of the Soviet Union offices but a Soviet leader usually led the country through the office of the Premier and/or the office of the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). In the ideology of Vladimir Lenin the head of the Soviet state was a collegiate body of the vanguard party (see What Is to Be Done?).
Following Joseph Stalin's consolidation of power in the 1920s the post of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party became synonymous with 'Leader of the Soviet Union' because the post controlled both the CPSU and the Soviet Government. The post of the General Secretary was abolished under Stalin and later re-established by Nikita Khrushchev under the name of First Secretary; in 1966 Leonid Brezhnev reverted the office title to its former name. Being the head of the communist party, the office of the General Secretary was the highest in the Soviet Union until 1990. The post of General Secretary lacked clear guidelines of succession, so after the death or removal of a Soviet leader, the successor usually needed the support of the Politburo, the Central Committee, or another government or party apparatus to both take and stay in power. The President of the Soviet Union, an office created in March 1990, replaced the General Secretary as the highest Soviet political office.
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Russian: Сою́з Сове́тских Социалисти́ческих Респу́блик, tr. Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik; IPA: [sɐˈjus sɐˈvʲɛtskʲɪx sətsɨəlʲɪsˈtʲitɕɪskʲɪx rʲɪˈspublʲɪk]) abbreviated to USSR (Russian: СССР, tr. SSSR) or shortened to the Soviet Union (Russian: Сове́тский Сою́з, tr. Sovetskij Soyuz; IPA: [sɐ'vʲetskʲɪj sɐˈjʉs]), was a Marxist–Leninist state on the Eurasian continent that existed between 1922 and 1991. A union of multiple subnational Soviet republics, its government and economy were highly centralized. The Soviet Union was a one-party state, governed by the Communist Party with Moscow as its capital.

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has warned a new Cold War is on the horizon
Today it's the series of tanks named after the Soviet leader himself, Joseph Stalin.
The funeral of Soviet leader Konstantin Chernenko. Chernenko only lead the Soviet Union for one year, 1984 - 1985. His reign was marked with health problems, and other Politburo members, such as Ustinov, Tikhonov, Gromyko, and most notably Gorbachev had to fill in for him at times. Chernenko finally succumbed to illness on 10 March 1985. Like me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RedSamurai84/
This is the memorial and funeral of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, in Moscow 15 November 1982. Leonid Brezhnev was leader of the Soviet Union longer than any person besides Joseph Stalin. He lead the nation from 1963 until his death in 1982. Brezhnev's legacy includes overseeing the most stable period of the country's history of the 20th century. However it was also a time when corruption began to take root within the CPSU and the nation's economy began to stagnate by the mid 1970s. But perhaps Brezhnev's most lasting legacy is making Victory Day (9 may) a national holiday once more in 1965 (the occasion was celebrated in 1946 and 1947, but was cancelled in 1948 by order of Stalin). This holiday would go on to become Russia's most important national holiday today. Brezhnev was also the las...

A frightening mockumentary made in a parallel world in which the popular uprisings against the communist regimes in Eastern Europe in 1989 lead to a very different outcome. Soviet President Gorbachev visits East Germany, promoting Perestroika and Glasnost, which leads to mass demonstrations against the hardline East German government. A successful military coup then takes place in the Soviet Union which installs a fanatical communist General in the Kremlin and sweeps away all of Gorbachev’s reforms. The Soviet Union takes increasingly provocative action against NATO, and the West retaliates in kind with increasing sanctions against Russia. The Soviet General orders the invasion of West Germany, which does not go well for him as Warsaw Pact forces are pushed backed well inside the Soviet U...

Although not a singular criminal organization, most of the individual groups share similar goals and organizational structures[citation needed] that define them as part of the loose overall association. Organized crime in Russia began in the imperial period of the Tsars, but it was not until the Soviet era that vory v zakone emerged as leaders of prison groups in gulags (Soviet prison labor camps), and their honor code became more defined.
