HDR Photo Video of Eastnor Castle - Gothic Style Castle in Herefordshire
HDR Photo Video of Eastnor Castle - Gothic Style Castle in Herefordshire
Eastnor Castle ( www.uk-tourist-attractions.co.uk ) sits near the southern tip of the Malvern Hills in spectacular Herefordshire countryside. Although Gothic in style, the castle is Victorian dating from 1810. It's a handsome building, standing proudly above a 20 acre lake. The photos used in this video were all processed from RAW files in SNS-HDR, which I find gives pretty natural results. Only single exposures were taken and then opened at plus and minus 2 stops before editing in an HDR video. I've put together a simple HDR Photography Tutorial here: www.uk-hotel-accommodation.co.uk The terraces at Eastnor Castle offer visitors extensive views across the lake to the countryside beyond, and looking north east you will see the Malverns, with buzzards circling overhead (at least on the day we visited). The terraces and circular lakeside walk provide virtually unlimited photo opportunities of the Castle itself, as this Eastnor Castle video will testify! The lighting conditions and cloud formations really lent themselves to HDR video on this particular day.

Wigmore castle
Wigmore castle
The ruins of Wigmore castle in Herefordshire, England. This castle is situated in the Welsh marches, steeped in history, now overgrown in woodland, in an atmospheric and romantic setting.Wigmore Castle was founded after the Norman Conquest, probably c.1070, by William fitzOsbern, 1st Earl of Hereford and a close associate of William the Conqueror. It was built on waste ground at a place called Merestun, the settlement by the mere or lake. The land was held at the time of the Conquest by Gunnfrothr or Gunnvarthr, who also held land at Lingen and Brampton Bryan. The associated town of Wigmore below the castle was probably also founded by fitzOsbern, perhaps around the earlier settlement. The form of fitzOsbern's early castle at Wigmore is unknown, but given the scale of his fortifications at Chepstow, Monmouth and elsewhere, it is likely to have been substantial and probably covered much the same area as the present castle. In particular, he probably had a natural ravine reshaped to create a deep ditch behind the motte. No evidence of early stone defences has yet been discovered, leading to the conclusion that fitzOsbern's castle was built of timber, but it is just possible that the dense vegetation and thick deposits of debris conceal the foundations of an early stone keep. FitzOsbern was killed in Flanders in 1071, and his son Roger de Breteuil took part in the Revolt of the Earls in 1075; after the Earl's subsequent defeat, William I seized the castle and gave it to ...

The Great Britain IV Days 7 & 9 - 5029 Nunney Castle
The Great Britain IV Days 7 & 9 - 5029 Nunney Castle
During the Easter weekend 5029 hauled the Great Britain IV run on two legs of the run. On Good Friday the loco took charge of the Preston-Bristol leg and on Easter Sunday she hauled the final leg of the run Bristol-Paddington. Because of the rarity of having GW Castles on each of these routes it was appropriate to fit in these two seperate workings into one film. Starting off at Woofferton on the Shropshire/Herefordshire border on Good Friday 5029 passes through the series of semaphore signals, signal box, goods shed and the old closed station. After its water stop at Hereford the Castle makes a steady climbe up the 1 in 100 Llanvihangel Bank due to a lineside fire risk. However the Castle puts on an impressive show up the bank. At Pilning 5029 again takes it steady as it approaches Patchway Tunnel near Bristol. Two days later on Easter Sunday Nunney Castle hauls the final leg of the run, this time along the Berks & Hants route to Paddington. Seen at Erlestoke and New Mill the sound and speed of a 4-cylinder locomotive is easy to reconise.

Longtown castle
Longtown castle
Longtown Castle was built in the 1180's by the Norman lord, Walter de Lacy, inside a rectangular earthen enclosure that may date to the Roman occupation of Britain. Fortified during the 12th century, the rectangular enclosure was bisected by another earthen wall, forming the two outer baileys of the castle which sat side-by-side to the south of the motte. In addition, a twin-towered gatehouse, protected with a portcullis, was added to the new outer curtain which enclosed the rectangular area. The gatehouse still exists, though extensively ruined. The enormous earthen motte is an impressive structure, rising some 35 feet into the air. Originally crowned by a timber tower, the massive mound most likely received its splendid round keep in the 13th century, when another Walter de Lacy had possession of the castle. Although unusual for England, round keeps were relatively popular in Wales, so it is not too surprising to find one here along the borders, even though Longtown is considered an English castle. In all, Longtown Castle was a simple but formidable structure. To the south of the fortress, a small town was started, but never reached its full potential. Vestiges of the medieval borough are visible in the surrounding fields, merely parallel earthworks scarring the landscape. The castle and its town were abandoned in the 14th century, but saw a brief resurgence in the early 1400's. Then, the castle was refortified in response to Owain Glyndwr's unsuccessful attempt to ...

Castles Storming Old Hill
Castles Storming Old Hill
Here, in this one-off break from Steam Through Cradley Heath, we have the two operational Tyseley GWR castle class locomotives, no. 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' and no. 5029 'Nunney Castle' hauling the 'Welsh Marches Express' through Old Hill Railway Station. The Welsh Marches Express ran diesel-hauled from Tyseley Warwick Road (Vintage Trains' own platform at Tyseley Locomotive Works) through Birmingham New Street & Wolverhampton stations, before stopping at Shrewsbury Station, where the Castles joined the train. Then, the train proceeded on to Hereford, where the engines stopped to fill up water and the passengers had an hour or two to look around Hereford. The train carried on along English and Welsh bordering towns and, a breif water stop at Magor, carried on to Gloucester, where the passengers were able to look around Gloucester for about an hour and a half. The train then carried on non-stop to Birmingham Snow Hill station, running through Stourbridge, Old Hill (where the train is captured in this video) & Smethwick Galton Bridge. Then, after a set-down at Birmingham Snow Hill, the train carried on the short distance back into Tyseley Locomotive Works, where the rest of the passengers were dropped off. The train was filmed coming through Old Hill Station at 6:48 pm, virtually bang on schedule! It makes a change from in the second edition of Steam through Cradley Heath, when the train was between 30 and 45 minutes late.

This video is similar to the old video, but it is shorter, without the diesel engines, in widescreen and without the music in the background. It is also the first video made on my new Windiows 7 computer with Windows Live Movie Maker (cheapskate, aren't I!) 5029 Nunney Castle along the Welsh Marches line 29/11/08
GWR Castle Class loco 5029 Nunney Castle hauls Past-Time Rail's Ludlow Christmas Market special from London Paddington to Shrewsbury via Bristol, Severn Tunnel Junction, Abergavenny and return. The weather for that day wasn't going to help us that day as it was very misty in some areas, making it tricky to get shots in some places. 5029 starts off at Bristol 5 mins late, she roars up the 1 in 75 summit at Horfield bank at full cry hauling a load of 12 coaches. The bridge I was on was fully caged meaning no one could photograph or film there, but luckily my camera lens managed to fit through the cage! After comming out of the Severn Tunnel the Castle breifly gets signal checked at Abergavenny by an early running local service before carrying on to be watered at Hereford. After being watered the Castle picks up speed and whistles through Moreton-on-Lugg. Unfortunatly after suffering an air brake failure the tour had to be diel hauled to Shrewsbury and return. With special thanks to David Oldham who drove me to the spots were I got 5029. Along with Phil Griffin and John Griffin.

Hampton Court Herefordshire England
Hampton Court Herefordshire England
Founded by King Henry in the early 15th century the castle has been completely restored. Hampton Court is a late medieval castle set in tranquil surroundings on the meadows of the river Lugg. Hampton Court is a private home set in beautiful gardens and grounds. It was granted by Henry IV to Sir Rowland Lenthall at the time of his marriage to Margaret Fitzalan. Original Victorian garden walls enclose stunning new flower gardens divided by canals. There is a maze of a thousand yews with a gothic tower at its centre. Climb to the top for a panoramic view of the gardens or descend underground to a tunnel that leads to a waterfall in the sunken garden. Beautiful herbaceous borders stretch out from a one hundred and fifty year old wisteria tunnel that leads to vast lawns and ancient trees beside the castle. Beyond the lawns are riverside and woodland walks.

The strategic position of Chepstow had been appreciated by the Romans - the arch above the main doorway is made from Roman brick brought from a fort that once stood nearby. Chepstow's strategic position allowed defenders to supply the castle via the river during a siege. Historically it was probably the first stone castle to be built anywhere in Britain. There were a number of alterations to the castle over the ages - from the later Normans to the Tudors and through to the Cromwellians. William fitz Osbern was created earl of Hereford by William the Conqueror, and was given the Welsh Marches to control. By the time he died in 1071 he had built the rectangular keep, which still forms the core of the castle today. At the end of the 12th century, Chepstow passed by marriage to William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke. He set about bringing improving the fortifications, rebuilding the east curtain wall which was the vulnerable side of the castle, with two round towers projecting outwards The arrow-slits in the towers, designed to give cross fire on the ground in ...
