The Flying W Ranch in Clements in the Kansas Flint Hills held its annual Flames in the Flint Hills event. Around 200 people attended the all-day event, which featured daytime and nighttime pasture burns, live bluegrass music, a steak dinner, educational talks and fireworks.

I have loved this song since I ran across it on Myspace several years ago. I always thought it would go good with some of my Flint Hills photos. So here is my little tribute to the song writer; and "proof" to the rest of you that Kansas is not entirely flat. (There are 26 States that are flatter.) It is only the lack of trees that makes it look that way. These photos were taken in open range country, in Chase County, KS., and further south and east of there. It is some of the most difficult landscape to photograph, due to the depth. I'm still trying to get better at it.
The song "Ocean of Land" is performed by Black Golden Bull.
It is used with permission.

Flint Hills
The Flint Hills historically known as Bluestem Pastures or Blue Stem Hills, is a region in eastern Kansas and north-central Oklahoma named for the abundant residual flint eroded from the bedrock that lies near or at the surface. It consists of a band of hills stretching from Kansas to Oklahoma, extending from Marshall and Washington counties in the north to Cowley County, Kansas and Kay and Osage counties in Oklahoma in the south, to Geary and Shawnee counties west to east. Oklahomans generally refer to the same geologic formation as the Osage Hills or "The Osage."
The Flint Hills Ecoregion is designated as a distinct region because it has the most dense coverage of intact tallgrass prairie in North America. Due to its rocky soil, the early settlers were unable to plow the area, resulting in the predominance of cattle ranches, which are in turn largely benefited by the tallgrass prairie.
The Flint Hills Discovery Center, a science and history museum focusing on the Flint Hills, opened in Manhattan, Kansas, in April 2012.

Urban Exploration: Crumbling Abandoned Stone House in the Flint Hills
I was visiting my mom recently near Alma, Kansas, and it didn't take long for us to discover this little gem tucked away in the native prairie grass, long forgotten by it's former residents. The Flint Hills are perhaps the most well-known geologic areas in Kansas. Stretching from Marshall County in the north, to Cowley County in the south, this region is made of a series of gently sloping hills. The Flint Hills area has the most dense intact tallgrass prairie in North America. Created during the Permian Period, the flint or limestone, was difficult to plow and not as nutritious for plants. Buffalo and elk once were plentiful in the area, which proved excellent for ranching. The limestone is fossil rich and used for construction. As always, after filming the video I did my research. I was visiting my mom recently near Alma, Kansas, and it didn't take long for us to discover this little gem tucked away in the native prairie grass, long forgotten by it's former residents.
The Flint Hills are perhaps the most well-known geologic areas in Kansas. Stretching from Marshall County in the north, to Cowley County in the south, this region is made of a series of gently sloping hills. The Flint Hills area has the most dense intact tallgrass prairie in North America. Created during the Permian Period, the flint or limestone, was difficult to plow and not as nutritious for plants. Buffalo and elk once were plentiful in the area, which proved excellent for ranching. The limestone is fossil rich and used for construction.
As always, after filming the video I did my research. The one clue I had to go on, with the exception of the vague range of possible addresses for this house (it's not like the number was magically preserved on the front door telling us where - exactly - we were) was the extremely faded name painted in red paint on the bathroom door. "Cayce" or "Cayge." I used all the resources available to me online. I still have some phone work to do and I hope to return to the area soon to conduct some interviews and - hopefully - film some more of these amazing ruins.
What are your guesses about what happened to this house; just overall neglect and wear and tear after it was abandoned by it's last caretakers? Or was it lightning or maybe a tornado? We saw what looked like a black streak across the front wall (the one with the big hole in it toward the end of the video) and wondered if it was possibly a scorch mark. I'd love to hear your guesses.

With a modern Victorian era with a SteamPunk Fair, baroque lattice on which aerialists, contortionists and acrobats put on Awe-inspiring performances for the crowd, all while two drivers pedal the whole magnificent machine through the Festival grounds or the streets.
I called it "The Time Machine" It took you thru a different time, Amazed your eye's heart and mind! I don't know when they are coming back to Minnesota, but If they do you don't want to miss their fantastic and amazing show. .. @//*-*\\@

A collaborative effort including the Kansas Dept of Health & Environment, EPA, K-State Research & Extension, Kansas Livestock Association and other groups completed the Flint Hills smoke management plan in December, 2010, with the objective of reducing health concerns from prescribed fire, while retaining it as a land management tool. The plan established a website of "best smoke management practices" and a comprehensive education and outreach effort for land managers was implemented, involving prescribed fire schools, news articles and radio airplay. Results of the plan are positive, indicating that Kansas has responded to the smoke issue appropriately and will retain prescribed fire as a management practice that maintains both the tallgrass prairie of the hills, and the air quality of adjacent metro areas. The inter-relationships of earth, water, air and fire are continual, each impacting the other. The Kansas Flint Hills now has a plan to ensure harmony of these essential elements of life.

They recognized, as we do today, that fire is the most powerful land management tool. The 4.8 million acre Flint Hills region of Kansas is the largest remaining expanse of tallgrass prairie in North America. Prescribed fire is routinely practiced in the region to enhance livestock forage quality, control invasive species, provide grassland wildlife habitat and improve plant vigor. But where there is fire, there is smoke, and there are public health concerns when excessive smoke is in the atmosphere. Ground level ozone can have serious public health consequences and major cities adjacent to the Flint Hills, have recorded excessive ozone levels resulting from Flint Hills prescribed fire.
