Documentary of 5 Days and 4 nights hiking through New Hampshire's White Mountains during the summer of 2011. We started on the Davis Path around Mt. Crawford and worked our way towards Mt. Washington for the finale. Complete with a lazy trip down on the Cog Railroad to finish things up.
A short clip on the major natural and themed Attractions in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
The Franconia Ridge Traverse is one of the most popular higher summit loops in the White Mountains. It traverses the two popular 5000 footers of Mount Lincoln and Mount Lafayette and one sub peak, Little Haystack at 4800 feet. We took the Falling Waters trail that follows a crystal clear cascade consisting of 3.2 miles of a steep rocky trail to the summit of Little Haystack Mt. at 4800 feet. We then followed the Franconia Ridge "1.7 miles" to Mt. Lincoln and Mt. Lafayette that are both above 5000 feet. Then headed down to the AMC Greenleaf Hut for 1.1 miles and then proceeded down the Old Bridle Path for 2.9 miles to the Parking lot . It took us exactly 8 hours to traverse the 8.9 mile loop....enjoy. Don't mind the poor editing and the shaky cam ;)
3 days of backpacking, stealth camping and hiking in the White Mountains. GPS trip data available at http://www.sintax77.com For this late Summer hammock camping trip (August), I'll be going for the full range of White Mountains backpacking and hiking experiences. From the seclusion of rugged wilderness areas, to the tourist laded summit of Mount Washington. Encompassing both the western and eastern sides of Rt 16, the goal is to complete a 3 day loop comprised of the Presidential Range, Tuckerman Ravine, Wildcat Range, and the Carter-Moriah Range before returning to the car. If you're interested in the gear, check out my full Gear List Video here: http://youtu.be/Sv56DnpxD2I The 11lb base weight system seen in that video is identical to my system for this trip with the exception of th...
The museum's inaugural exhibition combines images, interpretive panels, films and interactive technologies to invite visitors to question the influence of time and space on human connections with nature. Focusing on five distinct areas—Crawford Notch, Mount Washington Valley (eastern slopes), the summit of Mount Washington, the Northern Presidentials, and Franconia Notch—visitors will think more deeply about the White Mountain region and the evolving human experience of it.
Join us for some frigid winter camping and backpacking along King Ravine in the White Mountains. http://www.sintax77.com For this overnight backpacking trip we'll be heading up towards Mt Adams, along the Presidential Range in New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest in early February. This trip was done almost a year to the day after our High Winds Hiking trip during the previous season. Only instead of temperatures in the 20's to 30's, we had a dramatically different temperature range the low teens at it's warmest, down to roughly 20° below zero at night. Ouch. Luckily, we didn't have the extreme winds that we encountered on that last February trip. One or the other is one thing. Both together, now that's what you don't want. What should I pack? The classic backpacking question. /// Taking a look at my preparation and hiking gear load-out for an upcoming backpacking adventure to New Hampshire's White Mountains. Actually, for this trip, we'll be pretty close to Maine as well, but I'll fill you in on those details later. For now I'll give you a look into my planning and packing phase. On this particular hiking trip we'll have a tight schedule. 2 days very far from home in fact (A "Blitz Hike" as we like to call it), so our goal is to keep things lightweight. This should increase our ability to knock out miles, and give us a decent margin of error (*something* will always go wrong), since we kind of need to be back at work 500 miles away after our 2 days off. Now, we're no where near ultra-light yet, which i...

Went up to hike Mt Cabot this weekend. Decided I would hit the full loop that included The Horn and The Buldge. The 11.4 mile loop took me about 6 hours to complete. I took The Unknown Pond Trail up to The Horn first. Unknown Pond is a beautiful area. There is a tent site located right next to it as well. Nice little photo op. The Horn had arguably the best view of the hike. Surprising 360 view at the top even with clouds and overcast skies. Views of the Presidentials and the surrounding area. The Buldge was a little lack luster unfortunately. No view from it and a small rock pile marking the summit. Mt Cabot was similar but well marked and had a nice view toward and at the Cabot Cabin. While walking from the summit of Mt Cabot toward the Cabin I had a bear run in on the trail (unf...

Great weekend in the White mountains of New Hampshire, Camped at a site called 13 Falls. Climbed to the summit of Mt Garfield.
The guest speakers at the Randolph Mountain Club's Annual Meeting (August 10, 2013) were the authors of the new book, The Geology of New Hampshire's White Mountains. The seven authors: Wally Bothner, Richard Boisvert, Thom Davis, Brian Fowler, Woody Thompson, John Creasy, and Dyk Eusden each took turns previewing a chapter from their book. It was an interesting and informative presentation, and I hope you take the time to watch the entire video. In case you wish to purchase the book, it can be found on Amazon.com. http://www.amazon.com/The-Geology-Hampshires-White-Mountains/dp/0970832486
For this backpacking adventure, we'll be exploring the Wild River Wilderness, a remote area of New Hampshire's White Mountains for two days, covering 36 miles, countless rain storms, and a few injuries for good measure. ;) The Wild River Wilderness is located in the North Eastern corner of the White Mountain National Forest, very close to the Maine state line. Designated by congress as a federal wilderness area in 2006, this is the newest wilderness area in the WMNF. Now you may think of anything outdoors as "wilderness", but Federal Wilderness areas are designated areas of land that prohibit just about any form of man-made development. This would include motorized access, structures, facilities, and permanent shelters. Trail maintenance is allowed, but only with hand tools. Sounds...
Taking our gear for a practice hike in Ricketts Glen State Park in preparation for our upcoming extended hike in New Hampshire's White Mountains . We did a test run with full load out around the Falls Trail on day one and a more leisurely exploration around Adams Falls on day two. We definitely confused some people by hiking this area with our extended trip packs, but it's better to find out how you can improve your system here than it is when you're out in the woods on an extended stay (for two of us, this is will be our first backpacking experience). We did "cheat" and eat campfire hotdogs for dinner though, couldn't resist! Oh, yeah and there was a lovely Severe Heat Warning this weekend, so this ended up being good worst case scenario practice as far as heat and hydration goes too. ...

In this two part series, I take a two day solo hiking excursion into the White Mountains of New Hampshire to explore Mount Adams, and hopefully, it's summit. This will be my first foray into solo hiking, and an very beautiful one at that. This will also be my first experience with hiking in moderate ice and snow conditions. Luckily, full crampons and snowshoes were not necessary, but without the light traction provided by my Kahtoola MICROspikes, I highly doubt I would have been able to attempt this hike. If I did, it certainly wouldn't have been safe or smart. Snow was mostly avoidable. When I did encounter it, there was usually a healthy mono-rail available to help me avoid post-holing (most of the time). Frozen ice flow however, was abundant. Not the best combination with a 38 p...
