The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people and peaking in Europe in the years 1346–53. Although there were several competing theories as to the etiology of the Black Death, analysis of DNA from victims in northern and southern Europe published in 2010 and 2011 indicates that the pathogen responsible was the Yersinia pestis bacterium, probably causing several forms of plague. The Black Death is thought to have originated in the arid plains of Central Asia, where it then travelled along the Silk Road, reaching Crimea by 1343. From there, it was most likely carried by Oriental rat fleas living on the black rats that were regular passengers on merchant ships. Spreading throughout the Mediterranean and Europe, the Black Death is estimated to have killed 30–60% of Europe's total population. In total, the plague reduced the world population from an estimated 450 million down to 350–375 million in the 14th century. The world population as a whole did not recover to pre-plague levels until the 17th century. The plague recurred occasionally in Europe until the 19th century. The plague created a series of religious, social, and economic upheavals, which had profound effects on the course of European history.

They were specifically hired by towns that had many plague victims in times of epidemics. However, some plague doctors were known for charging patients and their families extra for special treatments and/or false cures. They were not normally professionally trained experienced physicians or surgeons, and often were second-rate doctors unable to otherwise run a successful medical business or young physicians trying to establish themselves. Plague doctors by their covenant treated plague patients and were known as municipal or "community plague doctors", whereas "general practitioners" were separate doctors and both might be in the same European city or town at the same time. In France and the Netherlands plague doctors often lacked medical training and were referred to as "empirics". In one case a plague doctor had been a fruit salesman before his employment as a physician. Some doctors wore a beak-like mask which was filled with aromatic items. The masks were designed to protect them from putrid air, which (according to the miasmatic theory of disease) was seen as the cause of infection. The first epidemic of bubonic plague dates back to the mid 6th century, known as the Plague of Justinian. The largest epidemic was the Black Death of Europe in the 14th century. In medieval times the large loss of people due to the bubonic plague in a town created an economic disaster. Community plague doctors were quite valuable and were given special privileges. For example, plague doctors were freely allowed to perform autopsies, which were otherwise generally forbidden in Medieval Europe, to research a cure for the plague. Much is known of the disaster from the perspective of the largely well-to-do contemporary chroniclers, but this film tells the story from the perspective of the poor through the account of a local councillor who lived a stone's throw from Fleet Street. Shown as part of the Plague, Fire, War and Treason: A Century of Toubles season. In the programme, Dr Champion charts what happened in the months of the Great Plague of 1665, linking film sequences that dramatise life in one London street, Cock & Key Alley, within the City walls. During that time, the authorities virtually abandoned London. The Privy Council fled to the provinces and issued orders from a safe distance. Around 100,000 people died of the 'plague' across the City and suburbs. The parishes, which were responsible for the day-to-day running of London, were left to keep order and provide what care and protection they could. Neighbours in the alley took on new roles as the parish paid them to enforce plague orders. The widow Rebecca Andrews fell sick and was shut into her house along with the orphan she cared for. The blacksmith fitted the locks and another neighbour stood on guard outside. When the gravedigger was infected, his family were shut in with him, but later his son was released to carry on the family trade of burying the dead. The Channel 4 programme is based on Dr Champion's book, London's Dreaded Visitation: The Social Geography of the Great Plague 1665.

The bubonic plague wiped out a third of the human population in the 1300s. It's also known as the black death, and here's what you need to know if you're ever infected by it. What is it? The bubonic plague, or black death, is a disease transmitted to humans by fleas and rodents or rats carrying the infection. It was responsible for about 25 million deaths in Europe during the 14th century, or 30-60% of the European population at the time. The most recent outbreak occurred in mid-19th century Asia where it killed over 12.5 million people in India & China alone. Where is it located? The black death can be found everywhere throughout the world due to widespread infestation from rodents and fleas. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the disease was considered active until 1959, when worldwide casualties dropped to 200 deaths per year. But, a plague outbreak occurred in 1994 in five Indian states that led to 700 infections and 52 deaths, so the possibility of infection still remains. How will it kill you? Bubonic plague is an infection of the lymphatic system--or lymphadenitis. When you're infected, the bacteria localizes in an inflamed lymph node, where it begins to colonize and reproduce. It then leads to symptoms such as painful swelling throughout the body, known as buboes, which are pictured here. The buboes quickly multiply and can hemorrhage and become necrotic (necrosis), resulting in the premature death of cells. According to the History Channel documentary, if left untreated death usually occurs within four days of infection. How to survive: In the medieval times, towns would hire special medical physicians called "plague doctors" to treat the town's victims. These special doctors wore long, beak-like masks filled with aromatic items to protect themselves from the putrid air while they were treating their patients. Nowadays, treatment includes the use of these antibiotics, along with administering intravenous fluids, oxygen, and respiratory support. Promptly treating infections drops the mortality rate to about 1-15%, while untreated cases have a death rate of 40-60%. So which country used the bubonic plague as a bacteriological weapon in its wars? In the 1940s during the Second Sino-Japanese War, Japan air-dropped bombs on China that contained plague-contaminated fleas. These caused major epidemic plague outbreaks in China. What we know about the creepy video that has the web buzzing - found on a park bench full of secret codes and messages . . . This last week the internet has been a buzz about a strange video that was mailed to the owner of a tech website. The video depicts not only a strange man in strange clothing, but also contains coded messages that have left cryptographers busy. The entire video in question can be found by the link in the description and on my channel. But in the meantime, please stay tuned as Esoteric Detective investigates 6 Things we Know About the Plague Mask Video. Number 6. The video contains many codes and riddles. Many of which have left the Red-dit community busy for the past few weeks trying to decode them, after the video gained massive popularity when a Swedish tech blogger posted a copy of the film to his site, Gadgetzz, looking for help figuring out what it was all about. The hidden messages range from mild to disturbing. One of the more disturbing being discovered after a spectrogram of the audio was run. Inside the audio they found hidden images in the video appeared to depict tortured women were clearly visible, along with the phrase “YOU ARE ALREADY DEAD.” Number 5. The video and the person that made it were likely from Poland. This is evidenced by the fact that the stamp that was on the video when it was mailed to the tech blogger at Gadgetzz, was a Polish stamp, and the fact some of the locations in the video match locations in Poland. One such example, is the abandoned sanatorium in Zofiówka, Otwock. One photograph from inside the sanatorium even contains identical graffiti in the background as displayed in the video. Number 4. The FBI and the CIA are likely to be involved. Not into the making of the video, but in investigating where the video is from. This is because the video contains threats to the president of the United States. Recently decoded messages within the video contain coordinates to the White House, and also the words RED LIPS LIKE TENTH, the latter of which is an anagram of KILL THE PRESIDENT. Such threats against the president of the United States are always taken seriously, and it is more than likely that there will be greater attention on the video in the coming weeks by special investigators within the United States government. Number 3. The person or persons who made the video have gone to a great amount of work to hide messages inside the video. They would have needed a great amount of skill in regards to audio and visual encryption. Whoever made the video no doubt has not only a great interest in encryption but also a great deal of knowledge. This makes one ask the question, why was the video made, and for what true reason? Number 2. only three people posted it online before it came to fame on Reddit, a few weeks ago. The first was uploaded by Gadgetzz’s Johny Krahbichler, who was mailed the video a number of months ago, and he has no idea why he got a copy. And In late September, the video appeared on a YouTube account for Parker Wright, who hasn’t been identified by the horde of sleuths. In May, a YouTube user named aetbx uploaded a copy of the same video. In the comments and in e-mail exchanges the up loader gave his name as Daniel — swears he was given a copy of the video digitally by a girl he didn’t know, who told him she found the video on a park bench. He said that he uploaded it to YouTube to see what others thought about its origins, where it sat largely ignored for months. Around the same time that Daniel posted the video the YouTube, an anonymous 4Chan user posted a link to a downloadable copy of the video in the site’s paranormal message boards. The user also said they found it on a park bench. Number 1. Death is a major theme in the video. Note that the costume that the person is wearing, contains a mask which was worn by those dealing with plague victims. Also note the threat on the United States president. And the message: "You are already dead." At this point, of course little is known as to the reason why death is such a major theme.
