Jack Starr "Born Petrified" 1988

File next to Lightning Beatman and Hasil Adkins!Jack is a wild man from Texas who filmed sick home made horror movies, recorded weird 50's Rock&Roll, & howled some bizarre 60's Punk noise! This LP's got all his tunes plus the wild radio advertisments for his movies!
Surely the renaissance man of fifties trash, Starr was both a rockabilly performer and a monster-movie makeup artist. Only Ron Haydock could claim that sort of pedigree. Super-crude, some of the tracks were actually recorded in the bathtub at his mother's house - so he could get that BIG echo sound.traxfromwax:
FIRST SIDE, HIS CRAZY '50's RECORDINGS:
1. Crazy Rock (Bald Headed Woman & Long Haired Man) 2. My Love For You Is Petrified 3. Come On 4. Born Bad 5. You Only Live Once 6. Done Away With The Mean Old Blues 7. Patty McCrombie 8. Sweet Chick 9. Rumble At Flagpole Hill 10. Halloween Party 11. Constellation Of A Fool
AND THE 60s SIDE, WHICH ABSOLUTELY KILLS!

Oscar Toney Jr. "Loving You Too Long" The Contempo Sessions '73

Sublime southern soul work from Oscar Toney Jr – from an obscure later chapter in his career! Toney's probably best known for his late 60s sides for the Bell label in the US – but this album is a rarity recorded in London during the early 70s – a date that has Toney sounding even more heartbreaking and mature than before, with some surprisingly great backings that really retain an American feel for his music! There's a nice sense of warmth throughout – thanks to relatively full backings – but Oscar's vocals have all the down-home qualities we love from his Bell years, and perhaps even have a greater sense of longing and yearning, given the distance between his home and the studios for the set. Titles include a great cover of "Is It Because I'm Black", plus "For Your Precious Love", "My Girl", "Everything I Own", "Everybody's Needed", and "The Thrill Is Gone". CD features 3 bonus tracks too – "Kentucky Bluebird (45 version)", "Everything I Own (45 version)", and the funky "Chicken Heads", recorded with backings from Ultrafunk.  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Plan 9 "Frustration" 1982

Their first - great raw 60s sound. Featuring four guitars and a sound straight from those psychedelic '60s, Rhode Island's Plan 9 dealt with little except period covers on their first album, 1982's Frustration.Outside of its art college, Rhode Island hasn't exactly been a storehouse for modern rock music. But the state has a group to be proud of in Plan 9, whose Frustration is exciting garage psychedelia. The swirling, mesmerizing effect of four (!) guitars recalls the best of the late '60s and gives able support to Eric Stumpo's emotional vocals. There are no original songs here, just covers of period gems like Them's "I Can Only Give You Everything." - from: trouser pressPlan 9:
Eric Stumpo: lead vocals, guitar / Deborah De Marco: organ / John DeVault: guitar / Tom Champlin: guitar / Evan Williams: guitar / Michael Ripa: vocals, tambourine / John Florence: bass / Michael Meehan: drums / produced by Greg Shaw

The Dells "Freedom Means…" 1971 (Cadet Expanded Version 2015)

A stunning set from the mighty mighty Dells – a cool collaboration with the legendary arranger Charles Stepney and songwriter Terry Callier – and a record that shows just how far the group had come since their streetcorner harmony days! The vocals are incredible – that rich blend of deep notes and soaring highs that made The Dells one of the most technically amazing soul groups in the 70s – and Stepney's arrangements follow in the same mode as his work for their Dionne Warwick album, and his music for Minnie Riperton and Ramsey Lewis – with lots of groovy currents on the bottom and soaring strings on the top – sophisticated, but completely soulful too – at a level that nobody else can touch! Terry Callier wrote the original tunes "The Love We Had Stays On My Mind", "Freedom Means", "Melody Man", "Free & Easy", "Rather Be With You", and "It's All Up To You" – and the set also includes great remakes of "One Less Bell To Answer", "Make It With You", and "If You Go Away/Love Story".  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.trax:

Deke Dickerson & The Modern Sounds "Live At Duff's" 2010

Deke Dickerson & the Modern Sounds are two of the most respected roots artists working today. Deke has blazed a trail all over the world over the past decade, establishing himself as one of the genre's best-loved singers and guitarists. The Modern Sounds, from Chicago, Illinois, are a supergroup of talent comprised of Joel Paterson (formerly with Jimmy Sutton's Four Charms, Devil In A Woodpile, etc.), Beau Sample (formerly with Cave Catt Sammy), and powerhouse drummer (and recording engineer) Alex Hall. Recently, Deke & the Modern Sounds recorded a live performance at Duff's Garage in Portland, Oregon, and the result is this fabulous new Live CD. The sound quality is superb for a live CD, and tracks include Deke staples such as Mexicali Rose and Muleskinner Blues along with new classics like Run Red Run, Ain't No Grave Deep Enough, Lover Come Back To Me, and I'm A Lover Not A Fighter. A must have for all fans of genre-hopping roots music!trax:

Amy Rigby "Diary of a Mod Housewife" 1996

Amy Rigby's solo debut is a breath of fresh air: in an era dominated by overwrought, angst-ridden female rockers, the wonderfully titled Diary of a Mod Housewife offers deceptively simple songs which cut to the heart of what day-to-day existence is truly like for women in the 1990s. Rigby's songs are miniature character studies which find the pointed truths locked inside seemingly mundane circumstances: "Knapsack" details a galvanizing crush on the boy who works at the local bookstore, while "Beer and Kisses," an outstanding duet with John Wesley Harding, distills the sum of married life into the couplet "Get home from work, turn on the light/ Sit on the couch, spend the whole night there." In addition to her knowing lyrical eye, Rigby is also a terrific composer who synthesizes elements of rock, country, folk and girl group-era pop; melodic and assured, Diary of a Mod Housewife is a remarkable and unique debut. "The Bombay Jazz Palace" 2001

Released 31st July 2001 on Outcaste Records. Harv & Sunny (aka Sutrasonic) at Outcaste Records invite you along to the Bombay Jazz Palace, where a delightful array of Eastern influenced, down-tempo jazz / electronica is waiting upon your arrival. So no, its not some exotic porn den - you're only going to get jazz 'n table at this hotel. Worth a look in. - liner notesJohn Coltrane was obsessed with India; Miles Davis would stay up for days on end listening to his tabla player; Sonny Rollins, Dave Brubeck and Stan Getz all spent several months in Bombay in the 1950s; Charles Mingus had his ashes scattered in the Ganges. For decades, jazz musicians have bought into the modes, polyrhythms and extended time signatures of Indian music. This collection samples the fruits of these Indo-jazz fusions recorded by Indophile Westerners and jazz-literate Indians alike -- both the exotic and the intellectual, the rootsy and the genteel, the ethereal and the seriously funky. Dig the patter of the tablas, the purr of the tamboura and the liquid funk of the sitar as you enter the Bombay Jazz Palace...
We at Outcaste have dug deep to bring you The Bombay Jazz Palace, a retrospective snapshot of the long gone venue that played host to this new sound - collecting some of the most famed tracks to come out of this era. Sitars and trumpets, tablas and jazz snares, composed by true musical innovators including the jazz guitar/sitar style of Volker Kriegel, the kitsch piano scats of Dave Mackay & Vicky Hamilton and the blaxploitation tabla beats of Lalo Schifrin. The Stomachmouths "Born Losers" (1984-1989)

Upon listening to Born Losers, it's easy to believe that the Stomachmouths were the kings of the Swedish arm of the international garage revival of the mid-'80s -- they match the songwriting and attitude of the best American bands of the wave. Drawing from a vast knowledge of pulp Americana, singer Stefan Kéry and cohorts managed to build a composite persona that epitomized everything about '60s garage punk: the youth, the fuzz, the irreverence, and, of course, dirty rock & roll. Born Losers culls 23 tracks recorded between 1984 and 1989: all five tracks from their two early EPs, a generous selection of cuts from the LPs Something Weird and In Orbit, material from the American LP Wild Trip (originally released without the group's consent or knowledge), and as a bonus treat, a single each from the Mongrels and the Tonebenders, singer Stefan Kéry's two post-Stomachmouths projects. The Stomachmouths had the look and the sound pinned down. Kéry's mad nasal punkish roar is strongly reminiscent of Canadian revivalists the Gruesomes. The set list takes listeners from beginning to end and shortly back, messing around with the hard-edged surf garage of the early months and the slightly more R&B songs following the arrival of bassist Jens Lindberg in 1987. "Wild Trip," "Speed Freak," and "Something Weird" show the group flirting with psychedelia, while "Eegah!" and "Valley Surf Stomp" are excellent surf instrumentals. Generous liner notes round up this lovingly assembled collection. Recommended. (François Couture, Allmusic)trax:

"Supertones Surf - Modern Surf Band Spotlight"

Why would 15 bands from across the globe cover songs composed by The Supertones? Contrary to what you may think – this is NOT a tribute album. This album IS a showcase of some of today’s up and coming bands in the modern surf instrumental scene. It displays a slice of the vast talent of the surf instrumental phenomenon that has spread throughout the world and continued to grow unabated since the early 1960s. The concept behind this release is to strike a contrast between the bands’ interpretations of a body of modern surf music with the bands’ own original compositions. The songs and performances are a testimony to the quality of The Supertones’ music and the tremendous talent of today’s hot new surf bands. 29 tracks with almost 78 minutes of surf instrumental madness.

Steve Cropper "Dedicated" - A Salute To The 5 Royales 2011

Steve Cropper has said in numerous interviews that his main influence as a guitarist was Lowman Pauling, chief songwriter, arranger, and axeman of North Carolina's 5 Royales, a '50s-era group that wedded doo wop, jump blues, gospel, and jazz in an R&B style that scored them numerous hits throughout the 1950s. The 5 Royales also featured lead vocalist Johnny Tanner (and occasionally younger brother Eugene) supported by backing singers Otto Jeffries, Jimmy Moore, and Obadiah Carter. Cropper was approached by producer Jon Tiven (who he'd previously worked with on the first of his two collaborations with Felix Cavaliere) about collaborating on a tribute album to the 5 Royales, and jumped at the chance. Dedicated: A Salute to the 5 Royales, which represents the latest chapter in a late-career resurgence for Cropper, one of the most influential soul guitarists in history, combines the talents of a red hot studio band -- Cropper, bassist David Hood, keyboardist Spooner Oldham, percussionist Steve Ferrone, drummer Steve Jordan, and Neal Sugarman and Tiven on horns. In addition, Cropper and Tiven enlisted a stellar group of vocalists to perform 5 Royales standards: Lucinda Williams, Sharon Jones, Bettye LaVette, Delbert McClinton, Willie Jones, B.B. King, Shemekia Copeland, Buddy Miller, Dan Penn, Brian May, Steve Winwood, John Popper, and Dylan LeBlanc, fronting a great cast of backing singers. Despite the historic material and arrangements, Dedicated is a decidedly contemporary recording in production, saving it from the dubious fate of numerous other tribute albums that seek to re-create the actual vibe of original recordings. It begins with an excellent rendition of "Thirty Second Lover" featuring Winwood, but, fine as it is, it's a teaser for what's to come. LaVette and Willie Jones tear up "Don't Be Ashamed." On "Dedicated to the One I Love," Williams literally sends shivers up and down the spine as she uses her gauzy, slow, emotive voice to wrench every ounce of emotion from the verses -- with Penn adding another dimension to them on the bridge. Speaking of Penn, an excellent but reluctant lead singer, his reading of "Someone Made You for Me" is one of the most unexpectedly endearing performances on the set. McClinton's "Right Around the Corner" puts these rhythm & blues in the heart of honky tonk country. The back-to-back readings of "Messin' Up" by Jones and "Say It" by LaVette come close to stealing the show -- but Williams still holds on with the title track and her searingly naked "When I Get Like This" as the closer. Cropper also takes a couple of economical but stinging instrumental breaks on "Help Me Somebody" and "Think" that reveal the depth of Pauling's genius as well as his own. Given what a mixed bag tribute albums usually are, Dedicated is not only a surprise for its consistency, but a shining example of what they can -- and should -- be. (Thom Jurek, Allmusic)

Allen Toussaint "The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings" (Rhino Handmade 2500 Limited Copies)

Allen Toussaint is a legend who wrote and produced some of the greatest songs in New Orleans R&B history, but his career as a recording artist is hardly legendary. He didn't record all that much and what he did wax is overshadowed by his compositions and productions -- which, admittedly, is understandable given the work he did with the Meters, Lee Dorsey, Aaron Neville, Ernie K-Doe, the Band, LaBelle, Irma Thomas, and many others. But not being legendary is hardly the same thing as not having merit, and Rhino Handmade's 2003 double-disc set The Complete Warner Recordings makes a convincing case that Toussaint's three albums for Warner and Reprise are among the best hidden treasures in soul music. These three albums -- which are augmented by a very different single version of "Country John" and a full live concert originally released in part on Rhino's 1989 various-artists collection New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, 1976 (although it apparently was recorded in Philadelphia in 1975), here presented in its entirety on the second disc -- represent the longest period of recording Toussaint had as a solo artist. He cut The Wild Sound of New Orleans by Tousan in 1958, at the peak of rock & roll and R&B's chart success (this material is collected on Bear Family's The Complete "Tousan" Sessions), but throughout the '60s he devoted himself to behind-the-scenes work before getting the chance to record his own albums in the early '70s, starting with Toussaint (later retitled From a Whisper to a Scream for a U.K. reissue), cut for Scepter Records in 1970. He then moved to Warner, where he recorded three albums -- 1972's Life, Love and Faith, 1975's Southern Nights, 1978's Motion -- that largely went unheard outside of New Orleans R&B and soul circles. Apart from a few import and quasi-legal budget-line reissues, these albums remained out of print for years, only surfacing as selections on the excellent 1991 CD The Allen Toussaint Collection, which expertly summarizes these records. Such is the neglect bestowed upon these three records; even in his otherwise fine liner notes for The Complete Warner Recordings, Billy Vera glosses over these albums, spending about a page on them and never going into detail. All this means is that the music needs to speak for itself, which it certainly can do. Toussaint did something very interesting with his Warner recordings. He stayed grounded in the earthy New Orleans R&B and funk that had been his bread and butter for many a year, but he spun it differently, bringing it in line with the smooth soul coming out of places like Philadelphia in the '70s, tempering it with a bit of a gloss borrowed from Los Angeles troubadours, yet retaining that distinctly Southern feel. Each album shares that sound, with each song clearly identifiable as the work of Allen Toussaint, but each has its own feel. Life, Love and Faith is the strongest and funkiest of the bunch, a Southern soul spin on West Coast singer/songwriter albums that is an excellent expansion of his signature sound. Southern Nights is Toussaint's album rock album, complete with a hazy theme and trippy instrumental interludes. Motion is his smooth commercial soul album, recorded with L.A. studio pros at Warner's insistence. The live album finds Toussaint returning to the basics of his music, which is at once earthy and sophisticated. While each of the albums apart from Life, Love and Faith might have a flaw -- Southern Nights is a bit unfocused, Motion a bit too slick, the live material can meander -- these are minor issues since there's such a wealth of wonderful music here. Toussaint has an easy, relaxed touch to his performances that enhances the sly elegance of his writing, whether it's on ballads like "With You in Mind" and the gorgeous "What Do You Want the Girl to Do?" or intricate funk like "Victims of the Darkness" and the dynamic, layered "Last Train," or such idiosyncratic spins on classic New Orleans R&B like "Brickyard Blues" and "Shoo-Ra," the latter two taken from the live set. These are just a few of the many sublime moments on The Complete Warner Recordings -- moments so good, it's hard to believe that these albums have gone underappreciated for so long. Since this set is limited to 2,500 copies and only available through www.rhinohandmade.com, this doesn't necessarily rectify the situation -- after all, that's hardly a wide distrubition (then again, as Paul Gayten quoted in Vera's liner notes, "New Orleans music is the greatest in the world, but it just doesn't sell to the mass public") -- but anybody who loves soul music and New Orleans R&B needs to own this priceless set. "Surfin' In The Midwest" - vol. 3

This third installment of instrumental surf rarities not only proves that there was rock & roll in the pre-Beatle teen idol era, but also surf music aplenty in the landlocked Midwest. Although nothing on here is going to compete with the likes of Dick Dale, the Astronauts or even The Surfaris, it all rocks like crazy, with much of it possessing some terrifying amounts of energy. Kicking off with the Novas' "Take 7," athe compilation soon reaches high gear with the Breakers' "Jet Stream," "Beachhead" and "Doheny Stomp," all loaded with classic sounds and immaculate playing. Other highlights include Rich Clayton and the Rumbles' Chantays-like "Flip Side," the Torquays' "Busting Point," the Tremolons' "Theme For A D.J.," Jay Bee and the Kats' "Tension," the Marauders' "Caliente," the Shelltones' "Mark's Blues" (shades of Travis Wammack) and perhaps the crudest thing on here, the Stingrays of Springfield, Illinois' ultra-stomping "Mad Surfer," a literal twang bar fiesta. The sound of the surf emanating from locales like Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and South Dakota. - AllMusic Review by Cub Kodatrax:

The Esquires "Get On Up And Get Away" Classic Chicago Soul 1966-1969 Westside CD

The Esquires were one of Chicago's greatest soul groups ever – but despite the fact that their big hit "Get On Up" still appears on comps all over the place, none of their other excellent material has ever really been collected – until now! The group had an amazing swinging harmony style that virtually set the scene for later Chicago groups like The Artistics and The Chi-Lites – and their records are made even better by great production by Chi-soul legend Bill "Bunky" Sheppard. This 23 track set's a monster batch of loping harmony vocal tracks, with the kind of Chi-soul groove that mixed uptown production with deeper vocals, in a rich blend that was the city's unique imprint on the soul market of the old days. Titles include "You Got The Power", "Reach Out", "Why Can't I Stop", "How Could It Be", "Part Angel", "Listen To Me", "How Was I To Know", and lots more! "Roots Of Funk" 1947-1962

A richly varied collection » par Blues & RhythmWhat is funk? Well maybe the answer is a minor variation on Louis Armstrong’s dictum : « If you have to ask what jazz is, you’ll never know ». Certainly compiler Bruno Blum struggles to define funk in the booklet notes to this roughly chronological collection, eventually admitting that ‘in some cases, the mere will to create an original, danceable rhythm was enough for inclusion here’. That is certainly a broad enough definition as to be virtually meaningless, but actually, Bruno does a pretty good job of it. He premise starts with New Orleans that has been defined as ‘the capital city of the Carribean’. The first CD is subtitled ‘Syncopated Creole Music – The Deep Caribbean Roots Of Funk’. Now I have some time for this idea – totally subjective it might be, but by far the best cover of The Meters I have ever heard was by a band from the tiny eastern Carribean island of Dominica. Hence we get the inclusion of Haitian voodoo ritual music, Latin souds and latin-infected blues and jazz, Jamaican mento, Slim Gaillard, Bo Diddley, Allen Toussaint and quadrille music from Guadeloupe – pretty wide, eh ? Oh, and I guess the limbo is a forerunner of funk – there are four versions od ‘Limbo’ on the first CD – two Jamaican, one Bermudan and Bo Diddley’s cover. It is also instructive to be able to compare ‘El Loco Cha Cha’ by René Touzet with Richard Berry’s ‘Louie Louie’. The second set concentrates more on jazz – ‘Funky Jazz, Hard Bop and Soul Jazz’ as the subtitle has it – drawing in Red Saunders’’Hambone’, Sun Ra, Mickey Baker, Duke Ellington, James Brown (ah, now we’re getting there !), Jamaican Rastafarian drummer Count Ossie, and saxman  Don Wilkerson. Horace Silver even has a tune called ‘Opus De Funk’. Sun Ra’s presence on this set is perhaps less to do with his music and more to do with his ‘Afro-Saturnine-futurism’ ?) and the influence this had on George Clinton, captain of the Parliament/Funkadelic mothership. I initially misread the subtitle for the third disc as ‘Negro Spirituals, Blues & Soul : Mardi Gras In New Orleans’ but in fact Professor Longhair’s carnival tune is the first track on this disc. No matter – we do get a large Crescent City contingent also including The Hawketts, Dave Bartholomew, Art Neville (twice), Lee Dorsey and three numbers by Eddie Bo. Then we also encounter The Blind Boys Of Alabama, Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson (from 1954, I hasten to add – not the funky’70s Watson), Howlin’ Wolf, Boogaloo with ‘Clothes Line’, more Bo Diddley (with a different take of his eponymous song than that on the first CD), Ray Charles, Nina Simone, Carla and Rufus Thomas, and three James Brown tracks – four counting Yvonne Fair’s ‘I Found You [I Got You (I Feel Good)]. Even Elvis gets in on the act, with the inclusion of ‘Crawfish’, his duet with Kitty White based on a New Orleans recordings do contain hints – only vague hints though, with hindsight, mayba a little more than that on Eddie Bo’s closing track, ‘Roamin’-itis’ ; ditto James Brown’s numbers, especially ‘Mashed Potatoes U.S.A.’ All in all, I’m not massively convinced that the roots of funk are to be found on this CD. On the other hand though, there is plenty to enjoy here a richly varied collection of (mostly) original danceable rhythms. Norman DARWEN – BLUES & RHYTHM

Thee Headcoats "Knights Of The Baskervilles" 1996

I first heard this album my first week of highschool and fell in love with it right off. Nowadays I'm a huge fan of Billy Childish and all the other Thee Headcoats realeases, but this album is still the best. For anyone into ANY kind of Rock n Roll. - By Repeater6655Few artists are as prolific as Billy Childish, who seems to put out numerous records with numerous different bands every year. Most of the material is worthwhile, though, sometimes his frequent releases can be forgettable. Thee Headcoats' Knights of the Baskervilles is definitely one of his best records. Undoubtedly, he spent time writing a lot of these clever songs, and he's nailed down the blues here, too, on a couple of tunes, something most English songwriters would have a hard time with. The majority of the tunes have the usual frenzied, raw, dirty garage sound to them, while the lyrics are all very witty. Childish shouts many of his vocals, and this may be a bit jarring for some listeners. He's also definitely written some of these songs before, though, but it's hard not to repeat yourself when you're as prolific as he. But records like this one should make him more than a cult figure, as his body of work is extremely lengthy, impressive, and always improving. - Review by Adam BregmanThee Headcoats were Billy Childish – Git/Vox, Bruce Brand – Drums, Johnny Johnson – Bass

Pearl Woods "Sippin' Sorrow" (With A Spoon) Rare & Unreleased New York City Rhythm and Blues 1958-1965

Tuff City/Night Train International is particularly proud to announce the release of Pearl Woods' "Sippin' Sorrow (with a Spoon)". Somehow these stellar gems from the classic R&B / rock 'n' roll era have slipped through the cracks of history. Able to master the broadest range of styles, Pearl Woods' records evoke Carole King, Esther Phillips and Tina Turner. Pearl Woods' music is a fine example of the excellent R&B and pop that bounced between Uptown's Harlem and Midtown's Tin Pan Alley. Sippin' Sorrow (With A Spoon) is the first and most comprehensive collection of Pearl Woods' music. Grammy Award winning audio engineer Ken Robertson digitally remastered these extremely rare and unreleased recordings. The CD contains a 12-page booklet with rare unpublished photos and comprehensive liner notes.
